The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, says the IBB International Golf and Country Club will be renovated and upgraded to international standard.

Wike disclosed this when he visited the club in Abuja on  Saturday, to assess the facilities.

He said that the renovation would begin with the Club House, where golfers wine, dine and unwind stress, under emergency intervention.

The minister added that the other sections of the club would be renovated and upgraded in phases.

He said that the renovation would be handled by Julius Berger construction company, which built the facilities in 1991.

He said that the club would remained closed until the renovation was concluded, in order to prevent it from degenerating.

“It is better we put the place in order quickly, so that when people come in, they will have where they can relax, have their drinks and rest.

According to him, making the club a tourist centre will attract investments.

“However, I want to advise the Board of Trustees (BOT) to initiate some innovative ideas for revenue generation to maintain the club instead of depending wholly on the government,” he said.

The minister explained that the BoT and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) were constituted to manage the club as government property.

He said that the step became necessary because government is not a good manager of facilities.

He urged the BoT and the IMC members to work as a team towards uplifting the standard of the club to international standard.

“That’s why we will not allow anybody to take what belongs to us. We will not allow that.

“Any move to sabotage what we are doing will not be tolerated,” he said.

Earlier, the BoT Chairperson, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, appealed to Wike to renovate the club and upgrade its standard to be at par with the rehabilitated Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

Dongban-Mensem, who is the President of the Court of Appeal, recalled that the club was built by the Federal Government and opened to the public in 1991.

She added that the club, which began with 29 members, has, at the moment, 5,000 members using same facilities.

She pointed out that the facilities at the club has worn-out due to excessive use over the years.

According to her, if upgraded, the  facility will become a tourist attraction site and in the long run, boost the economy of the country. (NAN)

Yusuf Quadri: Young Champion Redefining Nigerian Squash

Yusuf Quadri: Young Champion Redefining Nigerian Squash

By Aderonke Ojediran, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Squash, often described as a game of speed, stamina and strategy, demands mental toughness and a relentless drive for excellence.

Played in a confined court where agility and quick decision-making are everything, it tests the very limits of a player’s physical and emotional endurance.

In this sport where composure meets combat, expectations from players especially emerging talents, are high, sports enthusiasts note.

The players are expected to master control under pressure, develop unshakable discipline, and above all, deliver consistent performances.

At just 16 years old, Yusuf Quadri has not only embraced, embodied these demands but also redefined them with a history making performance at the fourth edition of the Prime Atlantic Squash Tournament held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

The junior player stunned the squash community by winning both the U-19 and Senior Men’s categories an unprecedented feat in the tournament’s history and one that places his name alongside the legends of the sport.

His dominance over older, more experienced players, did not come by chance; it must have been as a result of discipline, courage and a maturity rare for his age.

Quadri’s rise evokes memories of global squash icons like Pakistan’s Jahangir Khan, who reigned supreme in the 1980s with a record-breaking unbeaten run.

On the Nigerian front, he draws comparisons with former champions like, Wasiu Sanni, Gbenga Adeyi and Onaopemipo Adegoke (Onos) players whose names echo through the annals of Nigerian squash history.

Yet even among such illustrious company, Quadri’s achievement stands out.

According to his coach, Sanni Kabri (Coach Eba), the teenager has transformed from a fiery, sometimes temperamental player into one who now embodies the grace and discipline the game demands.

“He listens, learns, and shows the hunger of a true champion. His growth, both on and off the court, is remarkable,” Kabri said.

What sets Quadri apart is not just his technical ability but the confidence and maturity with which he handles big matches.

In the senior men’s final, he stayed composed against seasoned opponent Faruq Suliamon, moving with calculated precision, countering every shot with fierce determination.

If properly supported and exposed to global training circuits, Quadri could emerge as West Africa’s first genuine contender for a top 50 global squash ranking.

With youthfulness on his side, and a hunger that continues to show with every serve and rally, the future appears wide open.

If he stays focused and injury-free, we are looking at a potential Commonwealth Games or even World Championship contender, and perhaps 2028 Olympics gold medalist.

Some of the stakeholders in the squash community are optimistic about what lies ahead.

Chairman of the Lagos State Squash Association Tomi Falase described Quadri as “the poster boy and trailblazer for what hard work, discipline, and support can do”.

Nigeria Squash Federation President, Boye Oyerinde, noted that Quadri’s win had not only elevated the tournament’s prestige but also set a new benchmark for junior players nationwide.

Chief referee at the tournament Salome Iyelih also praised his improved game intelligence, particularly his court awareness, stamina, and patience during tough rallies.

“This kind of progress shows the impact of regular competition and sound coaching,” said international referee Iyelih.

Coach Wasiu Sanni also commended not just Quadri, but also the efforts of his trainer, coach Eba, for instilling both technical skills and personal discipline an often overlooked ingredient in nurturing champions.

Quadri himself remains grounded, he expressed gratitude for the support he has received and reaffirmed his commitment to improving.

“This is just the beginning. I want to keep pushing, keep learning, and keep winning,” he said.

His next step, according to his coach, should be registering on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) circuit to gain international ranking a move that could propel him onto the global stage within a few years.

With age on his side, strong institutional support, and a rapidly maturing game, Quadri could represent Nigeria at future international tournaments.

If he maintains his current trajectory, he could retire as one of Africa’s most decorated squash players.

Indeed, Quadri’s story is more than a tale of youthful brilliance it is a glimpse into what is possible when talent meets opportunity.

As squash continues to grow in Nigeria, he has become the face of a new era in squash.(NANFeatures)(www.nannews.ng)

A total of 50 participants are expected to attend the upcoming Africa Level 2 Coaching Clinic in Abuja, set to begin on Friday.

According to Taiwo Oriss, Secretary General of the Nigeria Aquatics Federation (NAqF), the event, organised in collaboration with Africa Aquatics, was designed to expose coaches to modern trends and developments in the sport.

“The aim is to equip and build capacity for our coaches across the nation with the required skills and bring them up to speed with modern trends and the ever-changing rules that govern the sport,” Oriss said.

He noted that some Nigerian athletes had underperformed due to technical gaps, and the clinic would help coaches meet international standards to properly train their athletes.

“We are expecting a facilitator from South Africa, Cedric Finch, for the three-day theoretical and practical clinic at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja,” Oriss added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Day 3 results saw Esther Oyema of Edo securing a best lift of 127kg in the 55kg female category to clinch the top spot and beat the standard record of 112kg.

NAN  reports that there were also some good podium finish performances recorded in other categories at the open national trials, which, however, did not surpass the best standard record.

Results on Day 1 saw Blessing Ibe of Rivers State with a best lift of 125kg emerge as the winner of the 86kg female category.

Daniel Omogbai of Edo, with a best lift of 190kg, clinched top spot in the 107kg male category.

Idris Rilwanu of Rivers with a best lift of 200kg clinched the top spot in 88kg male category.

Taiwo Tolulope of Edo emerged winner of the 97kg male category after he recorded a best lift of 160 kg.

Ruel Ishaku, the Technical Director of the Federation, told NAN that with more camping and training for the athletes in shape, they will produce even better results.

“These camps and training are very important for our athletes as it constantly keeps them in shape ahead of national and international competitions.

“We need more camping to make them continue to train because the more they train, the more chances of producing better results that will surpass the world’s best standard records.

“For instance, we have just concluded this competition now, but if the athletes go and relax, it will hurt their next performance.

“So, they need to be called to camp regularly to help them to keep improving on their performances,” he said.

Ishaku said that even those athletes who couldn’t beat the best standard, their records at the trials were still good enough for a podium finish at any international competition.(NAN)

Nigeria is set to host the 23rd African Fencing Championships, joining Senegal and Mali as the only sub-Saharan African nations to do so.

The event will run from June 25 to 29, drawing elite fencers from across the continent to Charterhouse in Lagos.

This follows Nigeria’s recent success hosting the 2018 and 2022 Junior Championships and the 2024 Fencing World Cup, solidifying its status in global fencing.

President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, confirmed the development on Tuesday.

Samuel described it as a historic milestone and clear evidence of the sport’s rapid growth in Nigeria—marking a breakthrough for African sports development.

He noted that Charterhouse Lagos, with British academic heritage spanning centuries, previously hosted Nigeria’s first Fencing World Cup, winning praise from international stakeholders.

“Now, it prepares once again, as Lagos promises world-class hospitality and a secure, spirited environment for the continental championship.

“Beyond medals, we aim to highlight Nigeria’s rich culture and pan-African unity. Visitors can expect vibrant cultural displays and local warmth,” he said.

Samuel emphasised that fencing in Nigeria represents more than sport. “It’s education, empowerment, and a journey of personal development,” he explained.

He added that the sport unites Nigeria’s diverse communities, instilling discipline, purpose, and national pride in young athletes.

“A dedicated Local Organising Committee is working with both international and domestic partners to ensure smooth logistics, security, and medical support.

“Our experience from the 2024 World Cup taught us valuable lessons. This time, we are leaving nothing to chance,” he noted.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Samuel said: “I competed in Morocco in 2008 and narrowly missed a medal — but now, I’m the host.”

He called it deeply personal, a symbol of how far fencing has come in Nigeria since those early days.

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria is targeting the podium. Though yet to medal at the Championships, Samuel believes 2025 may mark a turning point.

“With top Italian coaches and joint African training camps, our athletes are ready.

“The nation hopes to inspire a new generation as Team Nigeria competes on home ground — with pride and purpose,” Samuel said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The N-YLC, which began its inaugural season in April 2024, featured 23 teams split across two regional conferences with four teams qualifying from each group and securing their spots in the Super 8.

At the draws  held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, President of the NYLC, Robinson Adakosa announced that the Super 8 would adopt a round-robin format, featuring four matches daily at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Adakosa praised the dedication of all involved, noting that in spite of  the challenges encountered during the season, the league has succeeded in identifying and nurturing exceptional young talents.

“The N-Youth league has propelled participating players into a limelight in their various clubs as this season has not only revealed outstanding players but also drawn the attention of European scouts.

“The league remains committed to creating pathways for youth development in football,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the participating clubs, board members, and stakeholders, including the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), for their unwavering support.

He confirmed that all logistics for the tournament have been fully arranged to ensure a smooth and memorable experience for players and fans alike, with matches scheduled from June 23 to 30.

In a major boost to the tournament’s profile, Adakosa revealed that FC Barcelona’s Head of Recruitment, Villa Gorriz, would be attending, alongside scouts from UK and the Netherlands.

He stressed that the move by the foreign agents underscores the growing international interest in Nigeria’s grassroots football talent.

According to Babangida, the Super 8 would inspire grassroots players with the level of experience required in competitive leagues.

Speaking in the same vein, Babayaro said the championship was a laudable initiative, adding that it provides a suitable platform for the aspiring professional footballers to actualise their dreams.

The Super 8 championship, which is organised for players between the ages of 16 and 19, promises a week of explosive action, skillful displays, and future stars in the making.

NAN also reports that a total prize pool of N40 million is at stake with the overall winners expected to smile home with a whopping N10 million.

The runners up will get N8 million, while the third-placed winners will pocket N6 million.

The remaining participating teams will also receive financial rewards based on their final standings. (NAN)

The Nigeria Catchball Federation (NCF) says Catchball, a new sport in Nigeria, offers competitive benefits and has strong potential to empower the girl child.

A delegation from the NCF stated this during a visit to the Lagos State Sports Commission headquarters at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, on Monday.

The team was received by the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Mobolaji Ogunlende.

The delegation was led by NCF President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Bola Babarinde.

Other members included Mr Ayotunde Ayodeji, Chief Operating Officer, and Dr Ijeoma Ladele, Director of Chapter Development.

Ladele described Catchball as a fast-growing sport for women of all ages, which is quickly gaining traction across Africa.

She highlighted its recreational and competitive value, as well as its ability to empower young girls.

According to her, Catchball reduces street involvement and promotes both mental and physical well-being.

“Lagos has the opportunity to pioneer this sport in Nigeria,” she said.

She added it would drive grassroots sports, empower girls, and boost youth engagement.

In his address, Babarinde noted Catchball’s registration and official recognition journey in Nigeria.

He commended Mr Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, for his support.

He also acknowledged Mr Anthony Adeyinka, Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Grassroots Sports Development.

“Their intervention helped secure federation registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission despite initial challenges,” he noted.

Babarinde, also General Secretary of Renewed Hope Global, said the agenda targets 20 million jobs before President Tinubu’s first term ends.

He said Catchball is one of the key employment-generating initiatives under this agenda.

“Lagos will have the honour of launching Catchball, with plans to expand it to secondary and tertiary institutions,” he said.

He added that local government education authorities would integrate it into primary schools as well.

“The long-term plan includes launching a National Catchball League,” he explained.

This would happen after successful adoption across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Mr Nunayon Travih, Director of Sports, Lagos State, expressed willingness to partner with the NCF.

He revealed plans to establish a dedicated department for Catchball in the state. “A joint working committee will ensure smooth implementation,” Travih said.

Dr Oluyomi Oluwasanmi, Director of School Sports, also praised Catchball’s potential to engage Lagos youths.

She said its similarity to volleyball allows players and coaches to transition easily. “It offers a fresh option within the busy school sports calendar,” she noted.

Ogunlende thanked the NCF for selecting Lagos as the launchpad for the sport.

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to inclusive sports, especially those empowering girls.

He also noted the urgency of the meeting, ahead of Babarinde’s trip to South Africa.

The NCF president will attend the Africa Catchball Championship from June 16 to 26.

Other Lagos dignitaries present included Damilare Orimoloye, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports.

Also present were representatives of the Lagos State Sports Commission and other NCF members.

They included Blessing Oluwatimiro, Miss Naomi Nnaji, Haleemah Ojo, and Itohan Imoisili.

According to them, the meeting, held at the Commission’s boardroom, marks the start of a promising sports partnership in Lagos. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Lagos State Government has confirmed that no fewer than 370 pupils will participate in the 2025 South-West Basic Education Schools Sports (BESS) competition.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, revealed this on Monday at a news conference held ahead of the three-day event.

The competition will take place from June 17 to June 19, hosted by the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

It will be held in partnership with the Nigeria Schools Sports Federation (NSSF) and cover the South-West geo-political zone.

Alli-Balogun stated that the events include races (100m, 200m, 400m), long jump, high jump, football, chess, scrabble, ayo-olopon, table tennis, and board games.

He said the competition aims to inspire a new generation of sports lovers and leave a lasting impact on participating children.

Alli-Balogun said: “This event demonstrates the state’s commitment to nurturing young talents and promoting healthy competition for children’s all-round development.

“Lagos has a strong record of sporting excellence, with students excelling in competitions locally, nationally, and internationally.”

According to him, the event also promotes unity and sportsmanship, and the state is well-prepared to engage and challenge other states.

The preliminary football matches will begin Tuesday through Wednesday, while the track events will take place Wednesday at Agege Stadium.

The grand finale will be held on Thursday at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex.

Alli-Balogun stressed that participants’ safety is a priority and assured that proper security measures would be enforced throughout the event.

He noted that only qualified officials would supervise events, ensuring a smooth and hitch-free competition.

He recalled the state’s outstanding performances in past National Sports Festivals, especially in football, table tennis, and athletics.

“I’m honoured that Lagos, the Centre of Excellence, was unanimously chosen by all six South-West SUBEB Desk Officers to host this edition,” he said.

The zone includes Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, and Ekiti States.

Alli-Balogun praised the collaborative efforts of UBEC, state SUBEBs, and the Nigeria School Sports Federation in organising the event.

He also commended Ekiti State for successfully hosting the inaugural edition in 2024 and setting a high benchmark.

“This year, we build on that legacy, highlighting the best of our pupils’ sporting potential.

“Let’s also recognise sport’s role in students’ holistic development — mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially,” Alli-Balogun added.

Wishing participants success, he declared the 2025 South-West BESS Competition officially open.

Earlier, LASUBEB Chairman, Mr Babatunde Shittu, said the competition is more than a sporting event — “it’s a celebration of teamwork and discipline.”

He urged Lagos pupils to compete fairly, learn from others, and strive for excellence on and off the field.

According to Shittu, the event nurtures talent, promotes healthy lifestyles, and encourages unity, discipline, and teamwork among children.

He described it as a festival of youthful energy, skill, and the untapped potential within every child.

“Our schools aren’t just academic centres but also places where physical and moral development are equally prioritised,” Shittu stated.

He said the competition reinforces physical education as vital to the school curriculum.

He added it also encourages healthy interaction among schools in a structured and secure setting.

“Through this event, pupils learn perseverance, respect, and sportsmanship,” said Shittu.

He said that Lagos is building a generation that is intellectually capable, physically strong, morally sound, and socially responsible. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Nwankwo Kanu’s second edition of the Under-19 Football Tournament kicked off on Friday in Aba, with three matches played on the opening day.

The tournament, organised by the Enyimba Sporting Director, Ifeanyi Ekwueme, for the discovery of talents for the clubs, started in 2024.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that six teams slugged it out for supremacy inside the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, on Friday.

The competition features two centres, Aba and Owerri, and the winners from each centre would meet in the grand finale at the Enyimba International Stadium.

The teams playing in Aba centre include Enyimba FC Under-17, Ngwa United FC, Aba Madrid FC, all from Aba.

“I love what I saw from the first match against our opponent, Enyimba Under-17, and it showed there are talents in the lower league.

“The tournament is a good one for the youths and I think at the end of the day, there will be more improvement as the tournament progresses,” Loute said.
