“I faced stiff competition and had to push myself. But in the end, I was proud of the achievement.

“Thanks to my coaches for their advice. I don’t know how, but I won eventually,” he said.

Teenage Athlete Oladele emerges winner of 2025 Abuja Bikers’ Race

Teenage Athlete Oladele emerges winner of 2025 Abuja Bikers’ Race

By Joshua Olomu

Ace teenage athlete Ogurinde Oladele has emerged winner of the 2025 edition of the Abuja Bikers Race.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the teenage cyclist finished first at the fourth edition of the tournament held in Kubwa over the weekend.

In an electrifying display of speed and skill, Oladele who also won the 2024 edition of the race, crossed the finish line before other bikers, solidifying his position as a fast-rising star in cycling.

The thrilling competition brought together cycling enthusiasts from across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in their numbers to support their contestants.

Oladele, who spoke with NAN on the sidelines, said his victory was a result of proper preparation and hard work.

He said his commitment to the sport is fuelled by an ambition to participate in the Olympics and other global cycling championships in the near future.

“I feel great about this win, and it is all about hard work, determination and focusing on your goals.

“I am not just doing this for now, I’m looking forward to representing Nigeria at the Olympics, world championships, and other major international races.

“I want to gain more power and prepare well for what’s ahead,” he said

Also speaking, Monalisa Joseph, the first female cyclist to cross the finish line, said: “I’m happy because I just trained on Thursday, and that was all. But I stayed determined.”

Peter Japhet, the official tournament coach, commended the performance of all participants, adding that the youngsters did far more than he had expected.

“With little training, they showed strength and focus.

“Parents need to support their children by encouraging regular physical activity. Fitness should go beyond this event,” he said.

Izin Adaghe, a co-organiser of the annual event, highlighted the growth of the race over the years.

“This is the fourth edition, and it keeps getting better; the children gave us a real competition,” she said.

Also, Marian Oluwapidan, a core organiser of the bikers’ race, emphasised the broader vision behind the tournament.

According to her, the tournament is part of a larger movement to promote biking culture in Nigeria.

She, therefore, called on the government at all levels to provide more support, including better safety measures and dedicated days for cycling.

“Every time we watch the Olympics, we see countries like France, Italy, and Germany. We don’t see Nigerians, and that has to change.

“We have the energy, the talent, and the passion, so cycling must become a serious sport in Nigeria.

“We need roads where kids can train without fear of traffic. And it’s not just about the helmets and elbow pads; it’s about creating a culture where cycling is respected,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Special Report: Stakeholders set agenda for 2025/26 NPFL season

Special Report: Stakeholders set agenda for 2025/26 NPFL season

By Olanrewaju Akojede

Some football stakeholders have expressed concerns and expectations as the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is scheduled to kick off on Aug. 22.

In separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday, they shared thoughts on improving the league and players’ welfare.

A former Super Eagles winger and ex-Julius Berger player, Garba Lawal, praised the NPFL board for efforts to improve standards but noted there’s still room for growth.

“The NPFL board, led by Gbenga Elegbeleye, is doing well, and I’ve had constant engagement with them. My main concern is with clubs in continental football,” he said.

Lawal lamented that Nigerian clubs have struggled to reach the CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup semi-finals or finals in recent years.

“I’ve shared my concerns with the NPFL board. It’s been long since any Nigerian club got that far in African competitions,” he said.

He urged greater improvement in the league to return to the era of club football dominance by NPFL teams.

Lawal, who played for Esperance after Berger FC, said that deeper runs in continental tournaments would enhance Nigerian football’s prestige.

“I don’t enjoy seeing our teams knocked out early. When I watch Supersport, I want to see NPFL clubs represented.

“We need better players in the NPFL. It’s achievable if clubs can start winning more away matches,” he said.

He cited the example of South Africa, where three clubs reached the CAF Champions League semi-finals and final last season.

“They’re not better than us technically, just better organised. We must raise our standards,” he stressed.

Lawal urged better organisation and improved welfare packages to boost continental performance.

Another former Super Eagles player, Edema Fuludu, advised the NPFL to maintain the new league calendar aligned with European schedules.

“This is the first time the NPFL has stabilised the calendar, finishing the league on time. It’s a good development,” he said.

Fuludu praised the early start to the new season, saying it reflects positively on Nigerian football’s organisation.

He played for New Nigeria Bank, BCC Lions, and Julius Berger before returning to BCC Lions.

He stressed the need for fair officiating to uphold the league’s integrity.

“NPFL must work on officiating and ensure State Football Associations are fully carried along in match preparations.

“Some State FAs are not properly briefed, and that’s problematic,” he added.

Fuludu said home teams must also brief match commissioners adequately to avoid confusion or misconduct.

“NPFL should secure more sponsors and prevent any contact between match officials and clubs before or after matches,” he advised.

Harrison Jalla, Chairman of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria Task Force, also emphasised the importance of a stable league calendar.

“I rated the league 93 per cent last season. If the new date is upheld, the calendar will remain consistent,” he said.

He stressed that aligning with European leagues is crucial for player transfers and overall development.

“Before calendar alignment, players left mid-season for trials abroad, disrupting clubs. That has now stopped.

“They can now leave after the season ends, not during. It’s a huge improvement,” Jalla explained.

He commended the officiating standards last season, describing them as significantly improved.

“Officiating was much better. Though not perfect, the few bad referees were dealt with swiftly.

“It sent a clear message to others. Discipline has improved, and match venues are safer for families,” Jalla said.

He noted more away wins recorded last season, attributing it to improved discipline and transparency.

Jalla urged better welfare for referees and commissioners, including timely payments and fair remuneration.

“If officials are well paid, the likelihood of manipulation is reduced. They must be protected,” he added.

Jimmy Aimuagbonrie, coach of Fortress FC, acknowledged notable progress in the NPFL under current leadership.

“Our facilities are better, and NPFL now insists on stadiums meeting required standards,” he said.

He called for improved media coverage of the NPFL, both locally and internationally.

“More people need to watch the league. Media visibility must increase,” he urged.

Aimuagbonrie praised the NPFL for monitoring clubs and pushing for improved player welfare.

“I want to see insurance schemes for players and greater transparency in welfare matters,” he said.

He commended the Nigeria Referees Association and NFF for better officiating last season.

“By Week 19, we already had 11 away wins. That shows things are improving.

“We’ve never had it this good in terms of competitive balance and fairness,” he said.

Tony Nwadike, Executive Chairman of Premium Sport Hub, called for technology-driven officiating in the NPFL.

“We need to benchmark ourselves with top African leagues like South Africa’s,” he said.

While commending better pitches and stadium standards, Nwadike said Nigeria still lags in match technology.

“We should be talking about VAR now. We don’t even have goal-line tech yet,” he observed.

He noted South Africa’s advancement in VAR and suggested Nigeria should match that level of investment.

“South Africa shouldn’t have a richer league than NPFL. We must bridge the gap,” Nwadike said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ex-Commandos harp on sports to foster unity, support community

Ex-Commandos harp on sports to foster unity, support community

By Wandoo Sombo
The old students of Command Secondary School, Kaduna, Abuja Chapter,
otherwise known as ex-commandos, have harped on sports to foster unity and support community.
The students stated this at their maiden inter-house sports competition in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised to foster unity among members, promote healthy living, encourage networking and give back to the military environment from which they emerged.
The event featured a colourful march past by the four traditional school houses: Tiger House, Octopus/Rhino House, Dragon House, and Flying Horse House.
Speaking to newsmen at the event, the Special Guest of Honour, retired Maj.-Gen. Ayuba Haman, said the initiative was born out of efforts to bring old students together and encourage inter-generational bonding.
“The main purpose is to bring ourselves together, get to know ourselves because over the years, we have had so many sets.
“I am a member of the third set, 1984, and students have graduated up until 2025. So, it is an opportunity to meet other old students, and we hope to continue this, even with other chapters,” he said.
Haman said the choice of an inter-house sports event was deliberate, as sports had always played a unifying role in society.
“Sports is a unifying factor anywhere in the world. Sports is like a profession, and government at all levels, even individuals, need to invest in it.
“Countries like Australia, Brazil and Mexico have taken their youths off the streets into sports. If we really develop sports from the grassroots, a lot of these negative habits and attitudes we see can be curtailed.
“We can all see what happened with the Super Falcons and the glory they brought to us as a nation. So, sports is very important,” Haman said.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Abuja Chapter of the association, Mr Aaron Ogar, said the idea behind the inter-house sports was to bridge the gap between millennial and older alumni sets.
“We have this gap between the younger set and the older set, so this was set up to see how we can bridge that gap and encourage bonding among our members.
“Sports is one of the easiest ways to do that. If we look at recent happenings, especially what happened with the Super Falcons, we all celebrated when they won the Female World Cup,” he said.
Ogar said sports had great potential to engage youth productively, urging the government to structure more youth-oriented sporting initiatives.
“We don’t really need to look far; a lot of youth are actually looking for what to do.
“If the Ministry of Sports Development can put its act together, they can organise sports competitions that run from January to December and identify talents who will represent the country in future events.
“This will help unite Nigerians and address insecurity, because I believe some youths engage in crime simply because they have nothing to do. If they are properly engaged, all that will be a thing of the past,” he said.
He recalled fond memories of participating in the school’s march past during his student days.
Also speaking, an old student, Mrs Nguumbur Oritsejafor, described the experience as incredible.
“It has been such an incredible experience. We’ve been rehearsing for over two months now, learning how to march and play some games.
“It has been a huge learning experience. In terms of health, it’s been encouraging; and regarding competitiveness, it’s been exciting. This is good for unification.”
Similarly, a member of the inter-house planning committee, Ms Gumni Mallim, said the event was designed to promote fitness and honour their military roots.
“Most people seem to connect with sports, so we chose it to help us keep fit and bond at the same time.
“Someone like me, I finished in 1994, so you can imagine my age. We chose sports to keep healthy, network, and give back to the military setting.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event ended with cheers, camaraderie, and renewed commitment to future gatherings across other chapters.
NAN also reports that at the time of filling this report, Tiger House emerged winners of the badminton match while Dragon house emerged winners of the volleyball match. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Ibekwe won 26 votes against Chinedu Onikeku’s 13, emerging as NAWIS representative on the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation board.

“I was once an athlete, then a coach, and now a sports administrator. I understand the struggles of the players.

“I’m ready to partner with the federation to promote weightlifting, especially among girls. Sports is now a career path for many.

“We must guide athletes for life beyond competition. Education and planning are key to their long-term success,” she said.

Tijani stressed the need for mentorship and support, so athletes can reach their full potential during and after their careers.

Ibekwe, also a sports administrator, pledged to work for greater inclusion and opportunities for girls in Nigerian sports.

She emphasised the importance of creating an environment where female athletes can thrive and excel in their chosen disciplines.

“I will ensure girls get equal chances to grow. We must give them space to reach the peak of their sports careers,” she said.
