China has commissioned a 360-metre-high wind measurement tower, described as the world’s tallest wind energy observation facility.
TV BRICS, a NAN partner, reported on Friday that the facility would support high-altitude wind energy observation and technical validation of wind energy standards.
The tower is located in a major wind and solar energy development zone and forms part of efforts to build large scale renewable energy bases in desert and desert grassland areas.
The development is in line with China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, TV BRICS reported.
According to the report, the facility can measure wind speed, wind direction, wind shear, turbulence intensity and atmospheric stability at different altitudes.
The data generated will support research into high-altitude wind energy, the technical design of large scale wind turbines and the development of new energy systems.
The facility will also be used to develop advanced technologies and establish an open research platform for researchers and other users.
