The Edo Commissioner for Mining, Mr Kayode Iriabekhai, has pledged to work closely with host communities across the state to ensure safe and responsible mining operations.
Iriabekhai made the commitment on Friday in Benin on assumption of office as commissioner in the Ministry of Mining.
He however said that host communities would play a crucial role in the ministry’s activities under his leadership.
He said the ministry had experienced personnel who would work with him to fulfil the confidence reposed in him by Gov. Monday Okpebholo.
“Edo has lots of solid mineral resources, and we are going to ensure that these resources attract investors who will help generate revenue for the state.
“This will enable the governor to have enough funds to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo,” he said.
The commissioner emphasised the need for meaningful engagement with host communities before mining activities commenced in their areas.
According to him, the ministry will consult communities to identify potential hazards associated with mining activities and develop measures to protect residents.
“You cannot go to host communities to mine resources without engaging with them. We will first discuss with them and determine whether the mining activities will pose any hazards.
“We will identify areas where we can partner with them and put their safety first through the Department of Safety in the ministry.”
The commissioner explained that the department was responsible for conducting feasibility and safety assessments to ensure that the lives and well-being of residents were protected throughout mining operations.
Iriabekhai also assured that the ministry would hold roundtable discussions with host communities to ensure that all stakeholders worked together toward safe and sustainable mining activities.
