The Abuja Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), has called for increased public awareness and strict compliance with Ebola prevention measures to protect lives and sustain economic activities.
The Director-General of ACCI, Mr Agabaidu Jideani said this in a statement issued by Mrs Olayemi John-Mensah, the ACCI Media and Strategy Officer, on Thursday in Abuja.
Jideani urged business owners , workers, individuals and communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to remain vigilant and observe good hygiene practices.
He advised members of the public to promptly report suspected Ebola cases through appropriate public health channels and comply with official preventive guidelines.
According to him, disease outbreaks can disrupt commercial activities, trade, workforce productivity, supply chains and livelihoods.
“Protecting public health is essential to sustaining business operations, safeguarding lives and preserving economic stability,” he said.
Jideani urged residents to avoid direct contact with the blood and body fluids of suspected or confirmed Ebola cases.
He also advised regular handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers to maintain proper hygiene.
The ACCI director-general cautioned against handling bats, monkeys and other potentially infected wild animals to reduce exposure to infection.
He advised members of the public to seek guidance from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) through its official channels when Ebola was suspected.
He said suspected cases should not be taken to health facilities without prior instructions from public health authorities.
According to him, following official guidance will help ensure appropriate case management and reduce the risk of further transmission.
Jideani urged ACCI staff to remain cautious, practice good hygiene and comply strictly with public health guidelines and directives issued by competent authorities.
He said workplace vigilance and responsible conduct were necessary to protect employees, business visitors and the wider chamber community.
He said public health protection required shared responsibility, accurate information, responsible communication and coordinated action among stakeholders.
The ACCI director-general encouraged business owners to promote awareness among employees, strengthen workplace hygiene practices and rely on credible official sources for Ebola prevention information.
He reaffirmed the chamber’s commitment to promoting a safe and resilient business environment, while urging employers, workers and community leaders to support public health efforts and avoid spreading unverified information.
“Collective preventive action is essential to protecting lives, safeguarding livelihoods and minimising avoidable disruptions to economic activities,” he said. (NAN)
