The Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun Council, has elected new executives to steer its affairs for the next three years.
The newly elected executives were inaugurated on Wednesday at the chapel’s secretariat along Nawarudeen Road in Abeokuta.
Mrs Yetunde Fatungase, a Senior Editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and the agency’s Ogun Correspondent, emerged as the first female chairman of the chapel.
Other members of the new executives are Adegbenro Oladele as Secretary, Bankole Taiwo as Vice-Chairman, Gift Oba as Treasurer, Lauretta Fagbohun as Financial Secretary, and Olayinka Kolawole as Assistant Secretary.
Mr Wale Olanrewaju, Chairman of NUJ, Ogun council, congratulated the new executives and called for unity among members of the chapel.
Olanrewaju urged the new leadership to work toward improving members’ welfare and ensuring regular payment of check-off dues.
He stressed the importance of cooperation and collective responsibility in strengthening the chapel and advancing the interests of journalists.
Fatungase, in her acceptance speech, expressed gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in her, pledging to lead with fairness, transparency, humility and respect for all members.
She acknowledged that the chapel, like every human organisation has its challenges, including members, who might have felt aggrieved or dissatisfied on certain issues.
Fatungase assured members that genuine grievances would be given constructive avenues for expression and resolution.
“We may not always agree on every issue, but we can disagree without bitterness, personal attack or division.
“Our differences should challenge us to improve the association, rather than tearing it apart,” she said.
Fatungase appealed to members to embrace peace, dialogue and understanding, promising open communication, a listening leadership and inclusive decision-making.
She appealed for members’ support, cooperation and constructive criticism, stressing that its strength lies in the collective commitment of members.
She urged members to set aside bitterness and suspicion and focus instead on professionalism, integrity, truth and service to society.
“There is room for everyone at the table, and together, through mutual respect and genuine dialogue, we can move this association forward,” Fatungase said.
