The Kogi East Political and Economic Summit Group (KEPESG), has endorsed Sen. Jibrin Echocho representing Kogi East Senatorial District to contest senate position for third term.

KEPESG, a coalition of civil society organisations, made its position known at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

The group’s convener, Mr Okpanachi Jacob, said the endorsement followed consultations and assessment of political and developmental realities in the senatorial district.

Jacob explained that the group’s decision was based on what it described as the need to strengthen Kogi East’s representation at the national level.

According to him, the district has witnessed a decline in political influence at the state level since 2015 when the governorship shifted away from Kogi East, making effective federal representation more critical.

“This decision is not arbitrary. It is the product of deep reflection on the historical and present political dynamics affecting our people.

“Notably, Kogi East Senatorial District had, until 2015, consistently produced the governor of Kogi State.

“However, since the shift of power to the Central Senatorial District, our region has experienced a significant decline in political influence at the state level.

“This reality underscores the urgent need to consolidate and strengthen our representation at the national level as a strategic alternative,” he said.

He said the group considered Echocho’s legislative experience and exposure as factors capable of enhancing the district’s visibility and attracting development opportunities.

Jacob added that returning the lawmaker could improve the chances of Kogi East securing strategic leadership positions in the National Assembly, thereby amplifying the district’s voice in national affairs.

He noted that continuity in representation would also allow ongoing initiatives and developmental efforts associated with the senator to be consolidated.

The convener said the endorsement reflected the desire of stakeholders in the district to promote leadership based on competence, experience and capacity.

He urged political parties to field credible candidates capable of advancing the socio-economic interests of the senatorial district, adding that the group remained non-partisan in spite of its political advocacy role.

Jacob called on stakeholders and residents of Kogi East to promote unity and collective engagement toward sustainable development and effective representation.

He said the group would continue to pursue policy dialogue and advocacy programmes aimed at strengthening political participation and economic growth in the district. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
