The Enogie of Ologbo, His Royal Highness, Emma Iyase, has pledged to promote the inclusion of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in the implementation of host community development provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), 2021.
Iyase made the pledge on Tuesday when he received a delegation from the Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) on an advocacy visit supported by the Ford Foundation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the visit was part of efforts to ensure that PWDs participate in host community development planning and benefit from relevant programmes.
The traditional ruler commended the group for its advocacy efforts and emphasised the need to involve PWDs in community decision-making processes.
He pledged to advocate for their inclusion in relevant benefit structures and support the implementation of the PIA 2021 provisions for the benefit of all host community members.
In a demonstration of his commitment, Iyase scheduled a meeting with stakeholders involved in the implementation of the PIA 2021 for Oct. 27, and invited the advocacy group to participate.
The proposed meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to discuss practical measures to ensure the meaningful participation of PWDs in host community structures, projects and benefits.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the group, Chief Bartholomew Okoudo, thanked the traditional ruler for receiving the delegation and introduced members representing various disability clusters.
Okoudo explained the roles of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and the CCD in promoting the rights and participation of PWDs.
He said the visit aimed to secure the inclusion of PWDs in structures, programmes and benefits established under the PIA 2021 Host Community Development Framework.
The coordinator called for adequate representation of PWDs on host community development committees and their consultation on projects and programmes affecting them.
He also advocated equitable access to empowerment programmes, skills development, employment opportunities and other benefits arising from host community development initiatives.
Okoudo urged community leaders and stakeholders to recognise PWDs as important contributors to community development and ensure that their needs were considered in planning and decision-making processes. (NAN)
