The Chairman of Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State, Mr Bamidele Yusuf, says the council’s governance and development initiatives have translated into tangible improvements in residents’ livelihoods.
Yusuf said this at an event to mark the 2026 National Independence Day celebration at the council secretariat in Surulere on Thursday.
Yusuf said as Nigerians marked another year of independence, they should remember that the country they desired could not be built by government alone, but through the contributions of every citizen.
He acknowledged the challenges confronting the nation, but urged Nigerians to recognise the opportunities before them and their collective responsibility to build a better future.
Yusuf said he remained committed to providing purposeful leadership and pursuing initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of residents and contributing to the overall development of Surulere.
“Over the past six decades, Nigeria has remained an important force in Africa, blessed with vast human and cultural diversity, natural resources and resilient people.
“At the local government level, our responsibility is to ensure that development translates into tangible improvements in the lives of our people.
“Our administration remains committed to sustaining these gains while introducing more impactful initiatives across all sectors, with the overall wellbeing, development and prosperity of our people as our foremost priority,” he said.
According to him, individual acts of honesty, hard work, respect for one another, obedience to the law and commitment to our communities all contribute to nation-building.
He advised citizens to continue to believe in Nigeria, support one another and play their part in making communities better.
The chairman emphasised his administration’s commitment to transforming the education sector through a development plan designed to address deficits and other shortcomings in the sector.
He said the plan would focus on the construction of classrooms, provision of learning materials for pupils and students, technical education and skills development.
Yusuf said the council would also strengthen vocational education through the Surulere Vocational Education Institute, while artificial intelligence would form part of its education development plan.
He said the administration also recognised the importance of a clean and healthy environment, accessible infrastructure and a secure community.
Yusuf, therefore, urged youths to remain hopeful and focused, while calling on parents to continue supporting the younger generation.
He also urged residents to embrace peace, unity and responsible citizenship.
Also speaking, leader of the Legislative Council, Mr Olayiwola Abdulrahman, urged residents to support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and re-elect him for another term.
Abdulrahman said Surulere would continue to complement the efforts of the Federal Government through functional initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of residents.
He also encouraged active participation by community leaders, youths, women, businesses and other stakeholders in the development of the area.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Community Development Committee, Mr Wemimo Odumosu, congratulated Nigerians on the 66th Independence anniversary.
Odumosu urged Nigerians to continue to believe in the President, support one another and play their part in making the country great again.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the celebration provided an opportunity to engage the younger generation on the importance of patriotism, unity and their role in the future development of Nigeria.
It was a colourful display of patriotism as pupils and students from schools within Surulere Local Government gathered to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary. (NAN)
