The National Speaker of the Women Parliament of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Hajiya Sa’adatu Abdullahi, has called for increased participation of women in leadership and governance.
Abdullahi made the call in a goodwill message to commemorate the 2026 International Women’s Day, where she also extended greetings to Nigerian women in recognition of their resilience and contributions to national development.
She described women as the backbone of society, noting that their courage, determination and active participation across homes, markets, offices, farms and political spaces continue to drive social, economic and political progress.
According to her, women’s involvement in decision-making processes is essential to building a more just, inclusive and prosperous nation.
The SDP leader urged women to take bold steps toward greater political participation by registering as members of the party.
She reiterated the party’s commitment to inclusiveness, social justice and creating meaningful opportunities for women to actively engage in governance and leadership at all levels.
Abdullahi said this year’s celebration of International Women’s Day provided an opportunity not only to celebrate women’s achievements but also to strengthen their collective voice in shaping policies that address social inequalities, gender disparities and barriers to women’s advancement.
She stressed that organised, empowered and politically active women remain pivotal to national development.
The SDP National Speaker also called on stakeholders, including government, civil society organisations, institutions and communities, to collaborate in creating enabling environments where women could thrive and access leadership opportunities without discrimination.
She commended Nigerian women for their courage and vision, noting that their contributions to nation-building remain a source of hope and inspiration for the country. (NAN)
