The Federal Government has handed over to the Kwara Government 132 housing units at the National Housing Programme Estate Ogbondoroko in Ilorin.
Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, who received documents and keys to the National Housing Programme Estate at Ogbondoroko in Asa Local Government Area, said acquisition of the estate would reduce housing deficit in Kwara and provide sustainable housing for Kwara residents.
Represented by the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr Segun Ogunsola, the governor said that the estate has been fully bought and acquired by Kwara government from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
“This is another effort to bridge the housing deficit in Kwara State and provide sustainable housing for Kwarans.
“This estate has 132 housing units of different types, ranging from one, two to three bedrooms detached and semi-detached,” he said.
In his remarks, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, said the decision of the Federal Government to embark on the housing project was to bridge housing deficit.
He applauded Kwara Government for acquiring the housing units for the good of the public.
Represented by the Director, Public Building and Housing in the ministry, Alhaji Musa Abdullahi, the minister said that the Federal Government was in the process of constructing a Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Kwara.
“We will soon commence the construction of Renewed Hope Housing Estate in Kwara, as the contract has been awarded and we are now doing formality to start the project.
“So, I want to express our sincere appreciation to the state government for always being there for us.
“We hope to do more collaboration for positive achievement in future with the state,” Dangiwa said.
Also, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Dr Shuaib Belgore, said that the ceremony was not merely transfer of physical assets, but a celebration of purposeful governance, collaboration, and shared responsibility between the Federal Government and the state.
Represented by his Special Assistant, Dr Toyin Nasamu, the permanent secretary commended the state government for taking the bold and commendable step of securing the purchase of the estate.
“This decision clearly reflects the government’s proactive vision to expand housing access and integrate this development into the broader urban growth plan of the state,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), had in a survey conducted on abandoned housing estates nationwide in October 2025, drawn attention to the situation of the National Housing Programme Estate at Ogbondoroko in Asa Local Government Area.
In the report published on Oct. 9, 2025, NAN correspondents highlighted how Nigerians were facing challenges in getting affordable houses while many federal and state governments’ housing estates were abandoned nearing completion or after completion.
In many cases such housing estates have been taken over by squatters and rodents or overgrown by bushes, while hoodlums had vandalised fittings and electric cables in the apartments.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
