Nigeria’s Flamingos defeated their Puerto Rico counterparts 2-0 on Tuesday to bag valuable three points in their second Group B match in the ongoing FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Nigerian team, who had lost their opening game 2-1 to Poland, kept their hope alive with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Puerto Rico.
Nigeria started the game with real intent and pressing high but the breakthrough came in the 25th minute through Oluwakemi Adegbuyi who finished brilliantly from Queen Joseph’s precise pass.
The girls continue to push for a second goal but couldn’t bury their chances, with Queen Joseph, Tosin Rafiu and Favour Nwakocha coming close.
The Hakeem Busari-led team finally got their second of the match in the 90th minute when Precious Oscar headed in Kemi Adegbuyi’s cross to put the game beyond Puerto Rico.
The victory keeps Nigeria in second place in Group B, leading third-placed Poland with a better goal difference.
Poland lost 6-1 to defending Champions DPR Korea in the other fixture of Group B.
Nigeria will try to avoid defeat on Friday when they face high-scoring Korea to seal a place in the knockouts phase of the tournament. (NAN)
