The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff,ย  Gen. Christopher Musa, rtd., as Minister of Defence.

Musa served as Chief of Defence Staff from June 23, 2023, until his retirement on Oct. 24.

NCSCN Executive Director, Blessing Akinlosotu, in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, commended Badaru Abubakar, the immediate past Minister of Defence, for his dedicated service to the nation.

Abubakar had on Monday resigned his appointment in a letter sent to the President.

โ€Ž Akinlosotu said the council acknowledged Abubakarโ€™s contributions to the countryโ€™s security efforts and appreciated his honourable exit.

โ€œIn light of his resignation, NCSCN calls on Tinubu to appoint Musa, a seasoned and distinguished military officer, as the new Defence Minister.

โ€œMusa has a proven track record of leadership, strategic thinking, and expertise in security matters.โ€™โ€™

He said that during Musaโ€™s tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, he demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, driving significant reforms and improvements in the Nigerian Armed Forces.โ€

Akinlosotu listed some of Musaโ€™s notable achievements as: โ€œSuccessful implementation of Operation Hadarin Daji, which led to the liberation of several territories from terrorist control.

โ€œThe enhancement of regional cooperation and collaboration on security issues; strengthening of the Nigerian Armed Forcesโ€™ capabilities through training and equipment upgrades; promotion of professionalism and discipline within the military.โ€™โ€™

Akinlosotu said NCSCN believed that Musaโ€™s vast experience, expertise, and leadership abilities made him an ideal candidate to lead the Ministry of Defence.

According to the executive director, Musaโ€™s appointment will not only bolster the governmentโ€™s efforts to address the countryโ€™s security challenges but will also reinforce Tinubuโ€™s commitment to merit-based appointments.

โ€œWe, therefore, urge Tinubu to consider Musaโ€™s nomination and submit it to the Senate for confirmation.

โ€œTogether, we can build a safer, more secure and prosperous Nigeria,โ€™โ€™ he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
