As Nigeria turns 66, the Director-General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, has urged citizens to sustain faith in the nation.

He urged Nigerians to embrace patriotism and collective responsibility, and remain actively engaged in building a peaceful country.

Sulaiman, in a goodwill message issued on Thursday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, also charged citizens to promote unity and inclusivity in nation-building.

The director-general described the milestone as a testament to citizens’ resilience and perseverance.

He said the anniversary also reflected successive administrations’ efforts to advance the vision and aspirations of the nation’s founding fathers since independence from British colonial rule.

While aligning with this year’s theme, “From Reforms to Stability: Consolidating Nigeria’s Renewed Hope for Shared Prosperity,” Sulaiman called for unity and collective participation.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s diversity across gender, ethnicity, regions and religion should remain a source of national strength, rather than become a cause for division.

The former Minister of National Planning said issues concerning national cohesion, gender inclusivity, unity, economic development and legislative governance remained central to NILDS’ mandate.

He said the Institute remained committed to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, supporting legislative effectiveness and advancing sustainable national development across the country.

Sulaiman congratulated the leadership of the three arms of government, particularly President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

He urged Nigerians to remain committed to the Nigerian project, uphold national unity and contribute actively towards addressing the country’s security and developmental challenges.

Sulaiman acknowledged that although Nigeria had yet to attain all its aspirations, the country had continued to evolve and strengthen its democratic institutions since independence.

He said Nigerians should work collectively towards creating a more inclusive, prosperous and united country, while supporting efforts aimed at strengthening national stability.

The Director-General wished Nigerians a peaceful and restful Independence Day celebration, praying for continued peace, stability and progress for the Federal Republic of Nigeria (NAN)
