The National Productivity Centre (NPC) has urged workers in both public and private organisations to be more efficient and effective in the workplace to enhance productivity.
The Osun State Coordinator of the centre, Mrs Alimot Rabiu-Abodunrin, made the call while delivering a lecture titled “Strategies for Improving Productivity in the Workplace” at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) office in Osogbo on Wednesday.
Rabiu-Abodunrin said workers must learn to judiciously utilise available resources to achieve desired results.
“Effectiveness is the degree to which objectives are achieved to the satisfaction of the end user—doing the right thing,” she said.
She explained that the NPC’s mandate is to develop a productivity-oriented mindset and institutionalise a productivity culture among citizens to enhance service delivery and improve quality of life.
According to her, part of the centre’s activities includes organising productivity awareness lectures for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
She added that the NPC promotes the adoption of the “5S” model to help workers structure their operations for improved efficiency.
She identified the components of the model as sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain.
“To sort is to eliminate unnecessary items from the workplace, while set in order involves organising needed items for easy access.
“To shine entails routine inspection to identify and fix problems, while standardise means establishing procedures to ensure consistency,” she said.
Rabiu-Abodunrin also emphasised the importance of personal effectiveness, noting that it involves performing at one’s best, managing time efficiently and consistently delivering high-quality output.
In his remarks, the NAN State Correspondent, Mr Victor Adeoti, appreciated the NPC coordinator and her team for the visit and the insightful lecture.
Adeoti described the session as timely, especially for civil servants, and expressed interest in more comprehensive engagements.
He added that NAN remains ready to support efforts to promote improved workplace productivity.(NAN)
