The Obidient Movement has expressed concern over what it described as the growing role of the judiciary in Nigeria’s political process.
It alleged that recent court decisions involving Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) could undermine opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, expressed the concern during a news conference in Abuja on Monday.
He said that recent judicial pronouncements concerning NDC’s recognition had raised questions about the independence of the courts and the credibility of the country’s democratic institutions.
Tanko alleged that a suit challenging the status of NDC was filed shortly after the party was joined by a former Governor of Anambra, Mr Peter Obi, describing the legal action as politically motivated.
Tanko claimed that the case was entertained in spite of what he said was the plaintiff’s lack of legal standing.
He urged the judiciary to remain impartial and avoid actions capable of eroding public confidence in the justice system.
According to him, the courts play a critical role in preserving democracy and ensuring peaceful resolution of political disputes.
He warned that any perception of judicial bias could have far-reaching consequences for the country’s democratic stability.
The national coordinator called on the Federal Government to uphold the independence of the judiciary, urging authorities to ensure a level-playing field for all political parties and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
Tanko appealed to members and supporters of the movement to remain peaceful and law-abiding in spite of the ongoing legal disputes, urging them to remain committed to democratic means in pursuing a political change.
He expressed confidence that Obi and a former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, would be on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election.
Tanko also maintained that the movement would continue its mobilisation across the country.(NAN)
