The Senate has urged the Federal Government to convene stakeholders’ meeting to X-ray the recurring situation of flooding across the country with a view to arriving at a lasting solution.

The senate’s resolution was sequel to a point of order moved by Sen. Adetokunbo Abiru (APC-Lagos) during Tuesday’s plenary.

The motion is titled:”Flood Disaster in Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu and several other communities in Lagos and Ogun”.

The upper chamber also commiserated with the victims of the flood disaster and commended the governments of Lagos and Ogun for their handling of the crisis occasioned by the flood disaster.

It also directed the relevant committees of the senate to provide adequate funding for NIMET, Hydrological Agency of Nigeria, and the River Basin Development Authorities to effectively carry out their responsibilities.

Moving the motion, Abiru said that a number of communities close to the coast lines in Ikosi-Isheri and Agboyi-Ketu in Lagos and other communities in Ogun often experience flooding whenever the Oyan River dam is opened.

“The recent release of water from the dam caused unimaginable havoc  to residents’ property and livelihoods particularly on Tuesday, Oct.24.

“The  residents of the areas have fled their homes and businesses, schools and religious centres have all shut down in the affected communities,” he said.

The lawmaker further said that there is an urgent humanitarian crisis occasioned by the flood as those sacked by the flood are still hanging around with family members and friends,” he said.

He, however, said that in response to the threatening humanitarian crisis,  the governors of Lagos and Ogun and the Minister of Water Resources had all intervened in their respective capacities.(NAN)

The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF) on Thursday inaugurated the harmonised case management tools for child protection in the country.

The inauguration, which took place in Abuja, had in attendance all 36 states Commissioners for Women Affairs.

Mrs Uju Ohanenye, the Minister of Women Affairs, while signing the tools and commitment to implement integrated case management tools for vulnerable children and their caregivers, urged the commissioners to ensure its effectiveness in protecting vulnerable children.

Ohanenye decried the increasing cases of abuse, violence, maltreatment and harmful traditional practices affecting children, calling for more actions to address them.

“Those children are our children, every child belongs to the state. So if any child is being maltreated, you have every right to fight for the child that has been maltreated.

“We have to work together, let every one be involved,” she said.

According to her, plans are underway for African ministers and commissioners of women affairs to converge and strategise on ways to address challenges affecting women and children.

“We will call a meeting of all African women affairs commissioners and ministers and we will have a meeting and relay the meeting to the donors that are eager to help us and tell them to help us in a way that will benefit us and make an impact.

“The main reason they are coming to help us are the vulnerables, women and children, and we expect and plead that they help us in a way that poverty will be a thing of the past,” she said.

UNICEF Deputy Country Representative, Ronak Khan, said the tool would aid in addressing the plight of vulnerable children, especially those at the grassroots.

“As we know, there is a report that came out recently that reveals the prolonged armed conflict in Northeast Nigeria.

“It has cost the national economy over 100 billion  dollars in the last 13 years. It has displaced children and families leading to child abductions which actually deprives reunification, rehabilitation and reinterpretation.

“All should be managed through the case management system; so until we have a robust case management system, this will not be possible. This is equally applicable to regular development issues,” she said.

Mr Andrew Madugu, the Director Child Development, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, said: “These are instruments that we need to effectively implement our policies and strategies to take care of vulnerable children.

“With these tools, we will be able to know where the children are coming from, services that will be rendered to them and the end results of the services and see how effective it is.”

Ms Umeh Progress, Children’s Parliament Speaker, called on stakeholders to build the capacity of children’s parliament and address challenges affecting children in Nigeria.

“Children are the future and if we use them in battle, we are destroying the future. We must reclaim them, let us come together with one mindset to make the world a better place for children,” she said. (NAN)

A former Chief of Army Staff and Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, Gen. Tukur Buratai, has called on Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu to actualise his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Buratai made the call in a statement on Friday in Abuja, in reaction to the Supreme Court verdict that affirmed the victory of Tinubu as duly elected president during the Feb. 25 Presidential Election.

He said the apex court had in a significant development, rendered its verdict in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu,  thereby dismissing the claims put forth by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party.

“The decision holds significant implications for the political landscape, potentially shaping future policies and governance under President Tinubu’s leadership.

“I am urging all Nigerians, particularly politicians, to graciously accept the judgment of the Supreme Court and extend their support to President Tinubu.

“It is crucial for the stability and progress of the nation that we unite behind our elected leader.

“By setting aside personal and political differences, we can collectively work towards the betterment of our country,” he said.

He said it was only through unity and a shared vision that the nation could address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The former army chief called on Nigerians to strive for a prosperous and harmonious Nigeria under President Tinubu’s leadership.

According to him, President Tinubu has been handed a crucial opportunity to steer Nigeria towards a promising future.

“The path ahead may be challenging, but it is vital that President Tinubu remains focused and concentrates his efforts on bringing about positive change in Nigeria.

“By prioritising key issues such as economic development, social welfare, and good governance, President Tinubu has the potential to make a lasting impact on the lives of Nigerians.

“With determination and careful planning, he can contribute to the progress and prosperity of the nation.

“It is my hope that President Tinubu seizes this opportunity with dedication and perseverance, always keeping the best interests of the Nigerian people at heart,” Buratai added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

S/Court Judgement: Senate Leader faults stampeding judiciary into partisan politics

S/Court Judgement: Senate Leader faults stampeding judiciary into partisan politics

By Kingsley Okoye

The Majority Leader of the Senate, Sen.Opeyemi Bamidele, has advised opposition political parties and their candidates against stampeding the judiciary into partisan politics through alleged disinformation, mal-information and misinformation.

Bamidele disclosed this on Thursday while reacting to the Supreme Court judgement which reaffirmed the election of President Bola Tinubu, according to a statement by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs in Abuja.

Bamidele, who chaired the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters in the ninth National Assembly, kicked against how the opposition unduly dragged the judiciary into partisan politics in pursuit of its selfish interests against collective interest of Nigerians.

While celebrating the victory of the president, Bamidele condemned what he described as “the undue blackmailing of the judiciary even before the petitions of the opposition parties and their candidates were decided.”

He observed that the judiciary “is one of the most consistent, dependable and reliable democratic institutions that still stand for and with the oppressed.

” It is therefore amoral and immoral for any political actor or party to subject the judiciary to media trial rather than abiding by the rules of law.

“Judiciary has never been vilified in the recent history of this federation by petitioners who at different times benefitted tremendously from the independence and neutrality of the judiciary.”

Bamidele noted that the petitioners “claimed to have won the 2023 presidential elections during their separate world press conferences. But when they failed to prove their cases, they selfishly resorted to blackmailing the time-tested institutions, especially the judiciary.”

He observed that the decisions of the appellate and apex courts “have clearly shown that the last elections are the most credible since the beginning of the Fourth Republic with the deployment of Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, which the Independent National Electoral Commission used for the conduct of the elections.”

He, therefore, commended the apex court for standing for the truth and truth alone amid the ferocious, needless and relentless intimidation of judicial officers by the petitioners, who has said trampled upon the national interest in pursuit of their self-centric political agenda.

“Now that Judiciary has concluded all the presidential election petitions in favour of President Tinubu, Bamidele warned all political actors, interests and parties “to henceforth stop playing politics with the rule of law and the integrity of the judiciary,” he said.

Bamidele also warned “against the perverse culture of stampeding the judiciary into partisan politics.

” As far as Nigeria is concerned, judiciary remains an unbiased arbiter wholly committed to the dispensation of justice without regard to any ethnic, economic, political, religious consideration.

“It is therefore unfair and uncalled to paint the judiciary, the only source of hope for the oppressed, black in the eyes of the whole world. This does not harm the judiciary alone, but also portray all of us, Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, bad before the eyes of the whole world.

“This is completely unacceptable! And it must best stopped.”

Vulnerable women in a queue to receive palliative from ASUU

The president urged the government to come up with policies that would add value to the lives of the masses, especially those at the grassroots level.

Mr Shehu Giwa, Chairman of Giwa Local Government Council, who was represented by, Usman Zubeiru, Director, Social Development of the Council, described the gesture as heartwarming, saying the palliatives came at the right.
