The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has established a new directorate to handle the service’ landed properties located across the country.

This is contained in a statement by NAF Director, Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, on Thursday in Abuja.

He said the Directorate of Land Administration has been mandated to secure, control, document, manage and administer all NAF landed properties nationwide.

Gabkwet said the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, approved the new directorate which will be under NAF Logistics Branch.

He said the land directorate would interface with government ministries, and NAF Base Commanders to expeditiously dispense all cases of trespasses and encroachments on NAF lands in line with extant laws.

The spokesman explained that NAF wanted to address the incessant issues of trespass, encroachment and needless disputes over un-demarcated or unfenced boundaries, and avoid conflicts and disputes with civilians, institutions or organisations.

“The need for the NAF to address this situation is also expedient as some of these encroachments constitute a risk to the security of some NAF Bases with implications on national security,” he added. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

A bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin-Ekiti in Ekiti, has passed second reading in senate.

The passage followed the consideration of the bill at the plenary on Thursday.

Presenting the bill, its sponsor, Sen.Bamidele Opeyemi (APC-Ekiti) said the bill, when passed into law would develop world-class technologists, as well as the human resources needed to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Bamidele, who is the Senate Majority Leader said that the purpose of the bill is to create more access to university education in view of the large number of qualified candidates seeking university admission.

According to him, the applicants are annually stranded in their failed attempts to gain admission into universities in the country.

“The objectives of the university are, first and foremost, to set up an ultra-modern institution that will develop world-class technologists, as well as human resources that can sustainably manage our nation’s economy by providing technical and management expertise at the highest level.

“The university, when established, will further advance knowledge through research and nurture unique technological innovation, entrepreneurship and wealth management in its core area of interest.

“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, the enactment of this bill will help in transforming the technological and educational fortune in producing the desired manpower and expertise that Nigeria is yearning for, to exponentially speed up our economic growth and ensure sustainable development,” he said.

Contributing, Sen.Ahmed Lawan (APC-Yobe) recalled that the bill was passed by the 9th National Assembly.

Lawan said, “I wholeheartedly support this bill, the bill is worthwhile because technology and environmental sciences are very important, indeed crucial, for every country worldwide, especially in the 21st Century.

“If we want to develop, like most countries are today, we have to move away from being extremely traditional. We cannot afford to continue with this basic things. In most cases, outdated courses are taught in our schools or universities.

“This is the 21st Century and human beings, more appropriately, human resources, should be the source of developing our country, we have had petroleum from the 1950s to date, ” he said.

The former senate president said that it was high time to establish institutions that are 21st Century inclined to engender knowledge-based economy.

“We are still grappling with poverty, unemployment and so on. Some countries have nothing, but human beings, yet they have made tremendous progress, a good example is Singapore.

“Aside, most countries are now embracing knowledge-based economies, I believe the time is right.

“When we establish a new institution, it should be an institution that will provide education and enlightenment for the 21st Century development agenda,” he added.

Corroborating Lawan’s position, Sen.Victor Umeh(LP-Anambra) said that the university would focus on technology and environmental sciences.

“In this country, Mr. President, time has come when we shall be establishing specialised universities to pursue certain areas and fields of knowledge.

“By focusing on the advancement of technology and environmental sciences, we are confining this university to these two important areas.

“When we produce graduates from this university, we will be thinking of graduates with excellent knowledge,” Umeh said.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Sen. Barau Jibrin, referred the bill to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for further inputs.(NAN)

NAN MD seeks more media  visibility for SMEs

NAN MD seeks more media  visibility for SMEs

The Managing Director, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Malam Ali Muhammed Ali, has urged the media to give more visibility to the nation’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to bolster development.

Speaking on the sidelines of the West Africa SMEs Exhibition 2023 in Abuja on Thursday, Ali said that promoting SMEs would also help in driving the nation’s economic visibility.

According to him, most people overlook small enterprises and focus on the big corporations because they have the budgets for promotion through advertisement.

”But the real game is in SMEs. In other developed climes, for example, the Asian economy was transformed through the focus of the media on SMEs.

”In the UK, small businesses are the engine rooms of the growth of the economy.

”I urge the media to look at the small businesses; for the small things actually count otherwise they will be swallowed up.

“They are the ones that engage people the most in job creation,” Ali said.

On energy, the NAN boss said even when available, it came at a very horrendous cost, thus the need to innovate and look for alternative sources of energy.

He said, ”Renewable and green energy is the way to go, a lot of people have migrated completely to that  because it’s a lot cheaper after you have made the initial investment.

”It is important for SMEs to think outside the box, come together collectively to generate their own energy, so that they share the cost of energy supply.”

According to Ali, the issue of multiple taxation is hindering growth of many businesses.

He called on the relevant bodies to ensure tax reliefs, while commending efforts of President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the various initiatives targeted at curbing multiple taxation and ensuring tax reliefs.

Also speaking, the President and Chairman, Governing Council of NASME, Dr Abdulrashid Yerima, said SMEs were the backbone of the economies of countries.

He said that SMEs served as catalysts for job creation, economic growth and innovation, but often faced myriad of challenges.

Yerima said, ”These range from limited access to finance, regulatory constraints and inadequate infrastructural support.

”It is therefore imperative that we establish a collaborative platform that can effectively address these challenges and propel the growth and sustainability of SMEs in our region.”

Mr Ahmad Hamza, Dawanau International Grains Market Traders Association, said the challenge of exchange rates was affecting their profits.

Other exhibitors at the event were: BOI, NPF Microfinance Bank for BETA Woman Savings and Loans, Elond Engineering Services, UTO spices and Marinades, among others.

Other highlights at the event included an exhibition by various manufacturers and vendors from other West African countries. (NAN)
