The Action Health Incorporated (AHI), an NGO in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has reiterated its commitment to stop Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria.

The Programme Coordinator, AHI, Ms Fatima Idris, who spoke on the sideline of a three-day capacity building on the use of digital technology on Friday, said FGM violates girls right.

The three-day capacity building was organised for selected 40 adolescent girls in Ibadan.

Idris noted that the objectives of the capacity was to increase the knowledge of FGM through the use of digital technology skills, mobilse and train the selected girls to become champions of FGM who would continue to coordinate FGM school clubs after the training.

She noted that FGM could be described as all procedures that involve the partial or total removal of external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

According to her, FGM brought complications such as intense pain, excessive bleeding, urinary inconvenience, difficulties during menstruation, clitoral neuroma and difficulties during sexual intercourse and childbirth among others.

“FGM violates a series of well established human rights principles, norms and standard such as right to freedom from torture or cruel inhuman or degrading treatment.

“We have 30 in-school adolescent girls and 10 out-of-school adolescent girls from different schools and communities participating in the training.

“The training is exposing the participants to digital content creation skills to raise FGM awareness and the best three girls after the programme will go home with laptops.

“We are also teaching them how to pass the skills acquired to other girls in their various schools and communities around them.

“There will be a post training follow up visit to benefiting schools and communities to monitor the level of implementation across the schools and communities,” she said.

Also speaking, Director, The Gender/FGM Analyst, UNFPA, Uzoma Adedeji, said that any alteration, mutilation or cutting of female genitalia significantly alters the ability to perform physiological functions like childbirth.

She added that the maternal obstetrical complications of female genital mutilation substantially increases the risk of maternal death.

In the same vein, Mrs Toyin Adelowokan of the Oyo State Ministry of Health, in her presentation, warned that FGM victims could suffer infection of the uterus and vagina ascending from the genital wound and necrotising fasciitis.

According to her, female genital mutilation process could also lead to the formation of a keloid scar because of slow and incomplete healing of the wound.

A participant, Victoria Anozie of Ibadan Municipal Grammar School, said that the training had exposed her to technology skills that could be used to raise awareness against FGM, online violence and other forms of Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Also, another beneficiary from Hausa Community in Ibadan, Mariya Musa, thanked the organisers for the training, saying, “it will go a long way in reducing FGM practice in her community.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the capacity building featured presentation of laptops to best three participants and certificate to all the participants.(NAN)

CISLAC builds capacity of journalists for effective security, defence reportage

CISLAC builds capacity of journalists for effective security, defence reportage

By Angela Atabo

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has built the capacity of journalists to effectively report the defence and security sector.

Senior Programme Person, Peace and Security CISLAC, Bertha Ogbimi, made this known at a one-day Media Dialogue on “Effective Oversight and Defence Anti Corruption Reportage” in Abuja.

According to Ogbimi, the workshop is aimed at empowering journalists to effectively oversight the defence sector by asking the right questions to inform the public.

She said the workshop was also to know how to seek accountability and transparency in the sector where they fell short of best practices.

” Nigeria is bedevilled by multi dimensional security challenges and because of these, a lot of allocations have been launched into the defence and security sector.

” One would expect that normally, with the amount of monies being channelled to the defence and security sector, the issues pertaining to insecurity would have been addressed.

“However, unfortunately, we see an upsurge  in these challenges. As a matter of fact, a particular area called conflict entrepreneurship is booming.

“So you begin to wonder, why are we getting a counter reaction when we are putting in so much money.

Sometimes you get to talk with security personnel, and they tell you that they do not have what it takes to challenge armed opposition groups.”

Ogbimi added that although a lot of money was allocated in the defence and security budgets and allocations but the welfare of security personnel has remained a challenge.

“So some questions need to be asked, because the money is our taxpayers money and so we need some answers.

“We are not saying that the security operations and procurements and the finances of security institutions should be made completely bare

“We recognise the fact that there is such a thing as natural security, we are all patriotic citizens, we cannot bare our military in the public.

“What are those information that are not detrimental to national security that could be made available for citizens to truly understand where their taxpayers monies are going ?

Ogbimi said that given the fact that the insecurity kept increasing rather than reducing, it behoves of journalists to get answers to the critical questions .

She said this would help stakeholders in the defence and security sector play their roles and carry out their mandate effectively because the know they are being watched.

She said that this would help the security of Nigeria to fall in place.

Mr Senator Iroegbu, a facilitator, while speaking on Good Practices in Defence and Security Investigative Reporting, tasked journalists on their mandate.

Iroegbu said that investigative journalism was crucial for the purpose of transparency, awareness creation, reforms and to deter wrong doings .

He encouraged journalists to uphold the ethics of journalism while at it and to always seek to report the truth .(NAN)

Malicious Facebook Post: Erisco Foods fingers ‘powerful syndicate’

Malicious Facebook Post: Erisco Foods fingers ‘powerful syndicate’

By Oluwafunke Ishola

The founder and Chief Executive Officer of Erisco Foods Ltd., Chief Eric Umeofia, says that a powerful syndicate keen on killing his company is behind the “false and malicious’’ social media post against the company.

Speaking to newsmen on Saturday in Lagos on the raging Facebook controversy, Umeofia said that the syndicate, whom he identified as importers of tomato paste had been pulling such pranks over the years.

“Their ultimate goal is to discourage Erisco Foods as Nigeria’s major local tomato paste maker and force Nigeria to depend on imported tomato paste,’’ Umeofia said.

He vowed, however, that he would continue to forge ahead, to make tomato paste locally and discourage importation of the product to save the Nigerian economy.

Umeofia, who is described as Africa’s top tomato paste maker, said that the purported review of ‘Nagiko Tomato Mix’ by a Facebook user, named Chioma Egodi, was apparently another attempt to smear a local brand that had put a Nigerian manufacturer on the map.

Records show that Erisco Foods has had a dominant presence in the tomato paste sector in Angola and Liberia over the years, positioning itself as the fourth largest of its type in the world.

He lamented that the offensive Facebook post had a tendency to impact negatively on the company, describing the development as “one of the painful experiences of engaging in manufacturing in Nigeria’’.

According to Umeofia, the so called review of ‘Nagiko Tomato Mix’ by Egodi, showed her total lack of knowledge of the ingredients used in the making of tomato paste.

Describing Egodi’s post as baseless and malicious, he said that the write-up was clearly meant to drag Erisco Foods to the mud and destroy one of its flagship products.

“She showed her determination to kill our brand and products so why should I let her go scot-free?

“For the past five years, I’ve not received any credit facility in Nigeria – no loan. For the past three years, I’ve not received one dollar as foreign exchange.

“I’ve been sustaining my local production from my foreign investments in Angola and the United Arab Emirates.”

Narrating how the incident unfolded, Umeofia said that after Egodi’s product review on social media, he reached out to his staff to find out if any complaint had been filed by Egodi.

“I found out that there was none — no product, no batch number, no production number – but a claim that our product is killing people.

“We released a statement that we would not allow our efforts of over 40 years of production to be destroyed by a syndicate of importers who had been fighting our products.

“We decided to defend our corporate identity by tagging her to the statement.

“Some people advised her to pull down the post that she’s destroying someone’s business but she refused.

“She abused those that had positive comments about our products but made thumbs up for those that criticised it. Then we knew she had a hidden agenda.

Umeofia added: “we had fought tomato paste importers for years because we believe that producing products locally was the best way to support economic growth.

“Should I now sit back and allow someone to destroy what we’ve spent over 10 years building?”

The chief executive officer said that efforts to reach Egodi proved abortive, necessitating Erisco Foods to petition the inspector-general of police to investigate the allegations.

“If my product has been killing people, I should be killed.

“I have over 3,000 workers in my factory and pay over 20,000 people indirectly. How can I allow syndicates to destroy my hard work?”

Umeofia clarified that the product under scrutiny was a tomato mix and not tomato paste and that the former always had sugar as an active ingredient, stressing that the product was certified by NAFDAC.

He displayed an apology letter, purportedly written to Erisco Foods through the Nigeria Police Force, regarding the product review Egodi had posted. (NAN)

Gov. Mutfwang meets Plateau indigenes in FCT, urges diligence in national service

Gov. Mutfwang meets Plateau indigenes in FCT, urges diligence in national service

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau has urged indigenes of the state working in the federal service and living in the FCT to be diligent in the discharge of their roles.

He gave the advice in Abuja when he met with Plateau indigenes who are on the Directorate Cadre of the Federal Civil Service.

“The essence of this gathering is to begin to engender the spirit of being your brother’s keeper.

“We must look into how we can put ourselves together and create the necessary synergy that will help us to be able to build a good image of Plateau within the federal system.

“I am optimistic that there will be dividends that we can reap from such synergy.”

While calling on them to be thorough in the discharge of their duties, the governor urged them to be “the voice of the Plateau in the FCT.

“We need you to be a voice for us where employment is being given; we need you to be spokespersons for us where project sites are being decided.

“We need you to be our representative where discussions on development are being decided.

“We also need you to step in where some adverse decisions are being taken against us; we pray that God, who took you there, will help you to be able to quench any fire that can consume us.

“Many of you are self-sufficient in several ways. But I appeal to you to hear the cry of several younger people on the Plateau. They look up to you for assistance.

“When you initially came to Abuja in search of greener pastures, you came in search of what to do to help yourself and your family, but God has raised you to a point where you need to look beyond yourself and your family.

“You need to know that the destinies of many people are connected to your destinies,” he said

The governor also called on them to work in synergy in order to achieve positive results, adding that they must be united for the common good of all.

“You must show renewed energy, strength and commitment to making sure that Plateau becomes one of the states to be reckoned with among the  comity of states in Nigeria.

“We, therefore, count on your support and contribution. We can only be great if we ride on your shoulders to become great. May you avail yourselves.”

He expressed commitment to attracting more federal presence in the Plateau.

“In every sector, we need federal presence; we need to see the roads that belong to the federal government brought back to life.

“We want to see the federal government’s presence in health, education. We want to be able to partner with the federal government in mineral development.

“In every facet, we want to see how we can rebuild our relationship with the federal authorities to ensure that all the advantages accruing from the centre are enjoyed on the Plateau,” he said.

Also speaking, Senate minority leader Simon Mwadkwon described the occasion as a very unique one and first of its kind.

“Bringing us here to discuss the destiny of Plateau tells you the kind of person the governor is; he is someone that is ready to unite Plateau State.

“He is also ready to give Plateau a focus and a direction that will help us achieve what is good for the state.

“I believe that this gathering will offer us the opportunity to interact with one another as indigenes of Plateau.

“This meeting has nothing to do with political parties; it has nothing to do with ethnicity; it has nothing to do with religion. We are all citizens of Plateau.

“The whole thing is for us to know ourselves and to take the issue of Plateau state into cognisance. Whatever is our position, we should be focused toward how we can assist our state in terms of project, unity and peace building.”

He said that the governor would want to leverage on the positions of the indigenes in Abuja and that of Plateau lawmakers in the national assembly, to fashion out a vision that would help the state.

On his part, Rep. Chuwang Bagos (PDP-Plateau) said that in line with the governor’s slogan, “the time is now to bring new development into the Plateau.

“From the testimonies of Plateau indigenes in the civil service and even in the national assembly, this meeting is the first of its kind.

“If you see something like this that is the first of its kind, you know that our leader is a visionary leader.”

Bagos, who represents Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency, said that the forum was aimed at creating an enabling networking environment between the Federal and the Plateau Government.

“What the governor is trying to do now is to draw our attention to the fact that we cannot just rely on federal allocations.

“He is saying that we must tap from our human resources; we must get the best from the brains that we have from Plateau.

“We see this as a welcome development and we are going to give him all the support he needs to succeed.

“As Plateau lawmakers, we are looking at laws that are being established in the national assembly; we intend to domesticate them at home and build a synergy that will benefit us all,” he said.(NAN)

President Umaro Embaló of the Republic of Guinea Bissau, has decorated Brig.-Gen. Al-hassan Grema of the Nigerian Army, with the National Order of Merit, Cooperation and Development Medal of his country.

Brig.-Gen. Grema was the pioneer Force Commander, ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSMGB), which was deployed to Guinea Bissau in April 2022.

The Acting Director Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, in a statement on Saturday, said the general was decorated with the award on Sept. 27 at the Presidential Palace in Bissau.

Gusau said that the deployment of Grema was necessitated by the failed coup attempt in the country on Feb.1, 2022, during which the President and his cabinet were attacked at the Palacio do Governo while holding a meeting.

He said the ESSMGB, under Gen. Grema’s 17-month stewardship, stabilised Guinea Bissau and ensured peace and stability.

“According to many sources, the presence of the ESSMGB ensured an atmosphere of peace and security in the fragile West African country as evidenced by the huge increase in economic activities and return of many International non-governmental organization (INGOs) and global organizations.

“Several countries, including the US, are also working on reopening their diplomatic missions and offices in Bissau.

“During the award ceremony, well attended by the Guinea Bissau military and political top hierarchy, President Embalo poured encomiums on Grema and wished him well,” he said.

Gusau said the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, had commended Grema for making Nigeria proud.

According to him, the CDS also called on other commanders in various foreign missions to emulate the shining example of the senior officer. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Foundation establishes digital learning hub in Abuja for young graduates

Foundation establishes digital learning hub in Abuja for young graduates

The Richard George Foundation (RGF), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), on Friday in Abuja, inaugurated its digital learning hub established for young talented graduates.

Mr Richard George, Founder RGF, while briefing newsmen shortly after the inauguration, said that it was expected that the facility would serve as a knowledge hub for young talented graduates.

George said that the vision of the Foundation was to start raising young talented Africans who would become real change makers.

”Because we believe that those whose the world has not changed are those ones who will absolutely change the world. And, we want to play a part in this, ” he said.

He explained that RGF was an organisation set up to provide empowerment for young talented graduates, adding that the pillars of the Foundation were three fold

He said the fold included skills acquisition development, which could be technical or soft skill.

Others he said included education, which was not in the formal structure as was common, and then entrepreneurship opportunities.

The founder added that it was hoped that the facility would provide an opportunity for it to begin to birth concept and ideas that will become the start up business for tomorrow’s young talented Nigerians.

He disclosed that the NGO was just nine months old as it was birthed in 2023, adding that the Foundation was anxious to hit a key milestone.

“This is part of the milestone, before we turn one year,” he said.

He also disclosed that since the birth of the Foundation, no fewer than 52 mentees had been mentored in the first cohort, adding that another 50 mentees were being unburdened to commence the second cohort mid October.

“It is a continuous exercise and our mentorship programme is designed for only six months at a time.

“And, we also create opportunities for the mentees to undertake internship in several organisations that are partnering with us or supporting our vision.

“We also provide opportunity for them to continue their learning or chose a different career part,” he said.

George noted that several challenges poses limitations which hamper young men and women in Nigeria as discovered Foundation through research.

He said this included inabilities of several young graduates to own laptops or devices for continuous learning improvement, resources for data, and internet connectivity and reliability.

“These limitations affect the continuous growth of mindset of several of the nation’s young talents.

“So, before they go into employment, they lack the skills to be able to function in organised setting,” he said.

He further said that unemployment had social issues and consequences for the demographics (18 to 35) years, which the Foundation was focusing on.

“Increase in unemployment from the research by KPMG is pointing to 43 per cent, which means we are talking of a ticking time bomb.

“Having this type of facility is an opportunity for them to transfer energy into a place where engagement, communication, teamwork will thrive .

“And, our job is to ensure that the mentorship against our ethos and principles embedded as customer practice so as to become real change makers,” George said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the symbolic tape cutting of the facility was done by Mrs Astrid Arens, President/Founder, Voice Aid Association, Germany, one of the partners of the Foundation. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Gov. Mutfwang calls for more recognition of nursing profession

Gov. Mutfwang calls for more recognition of nursing profession

By Aderogba George

Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau on Friday in Abuja called for more recognition of the nursing profession, saying the practitioners are relegated to the background.

The governor made the call at the presentation of a book titled: “Challenges and Triumph of the Nursing Profession in Nigeria” written by Prof. Kola Oyedepo.

According to Mutfwang, the centrality of the nursing profession to the health sector cannot be overemphasised and the contribution of the profession is enormous.

He therefore called on policy makers, trainers and stakeholders to make sure that they promote the profession to fulfil its mandate.

“Nurses are very central in the healthcare delivery system, midwives are very central to the issue of birth. We must make sure that the professionalism in the sector is enhanced in every way that is possible.

“I want to congratulate the author of this book for giving the nurses further tools
to work. As governors, we are going to ensure that the health sector is looked at comprehensively.

“This is to make sure that the nursing profession within the health sector is given its pride of place, we are going to make policy pronouncements. We are going to invest in training to enhance the profession in our state,” he said.

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr Faruk Abubakar, noted that nurses play a pivotal role in the healthcare delivery.

Represented by Mr Emmanuel Udontre, Director, Planning Research and Statistics, NMCN, Abubakar said that nurses have the autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings.

According to him, advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and patients, health system management and education are key roles of nurses.

He called on government at all levels to begin to show more care to the nurses for the big role they perform in the healthcare system.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of of Health (FMoH), Mrs Daju Kachallom, also stated that the nursing and Midwifery profession occupies a unique and vital place within the healthcare system.

Represented by Mrs Francisca Okafor, Director of Nursing, FMoH, Kachallom said that nurses and midwives are compassionate, skilled and tireless professionals.

She said they are often the first and last point of care for patients, stressing that they must be treated with dignity.

Kachallom stated that they provide comfort in times of distress, guidance during moment of uncertainty and skilful assistance during the most critical phases of life.

She thanked the author of the book for dishing out such enormous knowledge in the medical profession.

The book author disclosed that he was motivated to write the book to encourage practitioners of nursing and midwifery to be committed to the profession and to seek for more knowledge.

The professor added that he was also motivated to write the book so that people will give more recognition to the practitioners of nursing profession, saying that nurses give 70 to 75 per cent assistance to the medical profession.

Oyedepo who was responding to the allegation of nurses of not being part of President Bola Tinubu’s ministerial nominees, blamed the nurses saying that they are not projecting themselves well as it ought to be.

According to him, nurses have a lot of information that could revive the healthcare but they are not projecting such information in the right direction, hence they are relegated to the background.

“Information is power but when this is not given out in the right direction, there is bound to be setback.

“Nurses have a lot of information but they are not projecting them out, there is a lot of advocacy they need to be doing to make them to be recognised.

“If you don’t say I am here, nobody will recognise you. Out of the three professions in the health fields, pharmacy, nursing and medicine, nurses carry almost 70 per cent of the healthcare workers population.

“They are not showing up but they want to be in power, this is why the people in power just ignore them ,” Oyedepo said.

He called on nurses and midwives to make use of his book to garner more knowledge about the profession and way out of the challenges confronting it. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Don’t pay lip service to education, Old Students Association urges Tinubu

Don’t pay lip service to education, Old Students Association urges Tinubu

By Adeyemi Adeleye

The St. Finbarrs’ College Old Boys Association (SFCOBA), Akoka, Lagos State, on Friday urged President Bola Tinubu not to pay lip service to education to tackle the nation’s numerous challenges.

The association gave the advice at its 25th Anniversary Reunion Celebration, which witnessed a novelty match, Grand Gala Night and landmark project unveiling of Class 98 in Lagos.

Speaking, Mr Eshiomomoh Ifoga, the Chairman of the SFCOBA ’98 Set, said that the new administration must prioritise investment in education sector and bridge the “yawning gap” between private and public schools.

“To stem this downward spiral, the Federal Government should increase the budgetary allocations to education.

“Nigeria is yet to meet the UNESCO benchmark of 26 per cent of national budget and six per cent of GDP.

“To overhaul the educational sector, the FG should pander towards a Public-Private Partnership (PPP),” Ifoga said.

According to him, since the return of the missionary schools to the Catholic Church, St. Finbarrs’ College, Akoka, has adopted a self-funding model and the school had over time forged a partnership with the Old Boys Association.

“The Old Boys Association has been involved in series of funds raising programmes for the school and this time around we are doing Luminous Signage for our alma mater.

“The SFCOBA’98 Set will align with the national body and make monetary donations (in form of scholarships) to fund the education of indigent students,” he said.

25th  Anniversary Reunion Celebration of St. Finbarrs’ College Old Boys Association (SFCOBA), Akoka, Lagos,  SFCOBA ’98 Set

On various interventions by the alumni, the chairman said that the SFCOBA’98 Set had in the past made monetary donations to students who did exceptionally well in external exams like WAEC and NECO.

He said that the SFCOBA’98 Set was committed to making these donations a continuous practice.

“We have a firm belief that monetary rewards for excellent and exceptional results will spur the students to acing all their exams.

“At the national level, the federal government should set aside monetary incentives to deserving students who did exceptionally well in their exams.

“Such gestures will largely drive healthy competition amongst these students. Only indigent students in the public secondary schools should be direct recipients of such awards in my opinion,” Ifoga said.

Ifoga said that though the school curriculum was within the purview of the Ministry of Education, the SFCOBA’98 Alumni Association would periodically organise seminars to expose students to hands-on and real life applications of subjects taught in the classroom.

Decrying the spate of cultism and widespread prevalence of drug abuse among secondary students, Ifoga urged the government to be more firm in stamping out the menace.

He said that the SFCOBA’98 Exco would organise seminars with experts drawn from various professional fields to disabuse the mind of students from cultism and substance abuse.

Ifoga added that the present secondary school curriculum might not produce students who could compete globally.

According to him, only students in heavily-funded private schools have access and exposures to these modern learning tools.

“The solution to this still boils down to extending a handshake of collaborations with the private sector. There are a plethora of companies run by seasoned edupreneurs,” he said.

In his welcome address, Mr Desmond Okoro, Chairman of the 25th Anniversary Reunion Committee called for a moment of silence to honour departed colleagues, teachers, and administrators who played pivotal roles in shaping their lives.

Okoro, who also paid tribute to their teachers, specially recognised the Principal Emeritus, Pa Alloysious Kpotie, for his contributions to their growth and success.

In his remarks, Mr Kayode Anibaba, a former Commissioner for Environment and Physical Planning in Lagos State, reminisced his time as a student and Mathematics teacher.

Anibaba also commended the set for their contributions towards the development of the school.

The School Administrator, Mr Victor Biyibi, described the Set as one of the prominent old boys association

Biyibi said that the outstanding performance of the current students had attracted students from the United Kingdom, Australia, America and Vietnam. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

NSIA-LUTH inaugurates programme for children with cancer

NSIA-LUTH inaugurates programme for children with cancer

To provide specialised radiation therapy for children with cancer, the NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre (NLCC) has introduced a Paediatric Radiation Oncology Programme in Lagos.

The Centre Director of  NLCC, Dr Lilian Ekpo, said during a media tour on Thursday that the pioneering initiative was designed to address the rising cases of cancer in children in sub-Saharan Africa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), childhood cancer incidence in sub-Saharan Africa is estimated at 56.3 per million population.

Current projections show that Africa will account for nearly 50 per cent of the global childhood cancer burden by 2050.

Ekpo said that this was what led the NLCC team to a significant step forward to confront this concern.

“The introduction of the Paediatric Radiation Oncology Program is our response to this pressing need.

“ It is an acknowledgement that children with cancer require specialised care that addresses their unique medical and emotional needs.

“ It signifies our unwavering commitment to improving the outcomes and quality of life for these young patients,” she said.

The director described the new medical service as a beacon of hope for children and their families who faced the challenging journey of pediatric cancer.

“The  project also represents a promise that the centre will make every child and every family who walks through its doors, a promise of hope, a promise of healing, and a promise of unwavering support.

“We have assembled a dedicated team of experienced radiation oncologists who are not only experts in their field but also compassionate individuals deeply committed to providing the best possible care for our young patients.

“Children are our most precious treasures, and their well-being is a shared responsibility.

“This programme underscores our dedication to this responsibility.

“It represents a promise that we make to every child and every family who walks through our doors, a promise of hope, a promise of healing, and a promise of unwavering support.

“Our journey to this point has been marked by tireless dedication, countless hours of planning, and unwavering determination.

“ Today, as we inaugurate this programme, we do so with immense pride, knowing that it carries the potential to positively impact the lives of countless children and their families,” Ekpo said.

She appreciated the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and NSIA for their commitment to advancing cancer care in Nigeria.

During her presentation, a Clinical Radiation Oncologist, Dr Adebayo Joseph,  stressed that 40 per cent of Nigerian cancer deaths could be prevented if patients were provided with the information and support they need to adopt healthy lifestyles.

According to her, the NLCC offers compassionate and comprehensive care at every stage of the patient’s journey.

This is as the centre understands the huge burden that a cancer diagnosis and its subsequent treatment places on the patient and their family.

“Hence, the highly experienced team made of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiotherapists, and oncology nurses provide the most feasible route to alleviate the situation by offering affordable, safe and proven treatment options’’.

Also, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of  LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, commended the NLCC’s efforts and contributions of their selfless service to humanity, especially the children with cancer.

The CMD said the centre had once again demonstrated exemplary leadership in the treatment of cancer in the country, urging the team to continue thinking out of the box.

Adeyemo also promised to keep supporting the team.(NAN) www.nannews.ng
