The Oyo State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Mr Abel Odoba, has called for active participation of local governments in the orientation course of corps members posted to the state.

Odoba made the call at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ stream II orientation course for the corps members deployed to state at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Iseyin, Oyo state, on Friday.

The state coordinator said engaging the youth for one year in the task of nation building was quite a laudable programme.

He noted the scheme had been running for the past 50 years.

“NYSC programme plays a pivotal role in introducing the participants to the scheme and their host state.

“In consonance with the overall objectives of the NYSC, the corps members have their first contact with the people and the culture of their host communities at the orientation camp.

“As part of our efforts to draw the community close to us, we have sent out invitation letters to the various local government areas (LGAs) requesting that they make their presence felt at the camp.

“They have the opportunity to showcase their ocal government to the corps members here on camp.

“We hosted a few of the local government chairmen during the orientation exercise for the 2023 Batch B stream one corps members.

“I, therefore, wish to use this opportunity to appeal to our local government chairmen that have not been part of our programme to embrace this window of opportunity by honouring our invitation,” he said.

Earlier, Gov. Oluwaseyi Makinde of Oyo State while declaring the orientation programme open charged the corps members on hard work, discipline and commitment.

Makinde who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. AbdulWaheed Soliu, said orientation course comprises scheduled activities designed as the first step to prepare corps members for the task of nation building.

“I want to let you know that answering the clarion call behoves a responsibility of hard work, discipline and commitment to the quest for national development and Oyo state in particular.

“One key component of the orientation course is the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme in which you must participate actively in order to acquire the skills and trainings that will lift you far above the unabated youth unemployment confronting the country.

“The SAED programme is geared toward handing you the opportunity to escape the arduous experience of crisscrossing the corners and crevices of the nation for the ever elusive job after the service year.

“Therefore, I expect you to brace up and rise to the challenge with a mindset of sacrifice, dedication, persistence and humility, “he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the opening ceremony featured the administration of oath of allegiance on the 2,444 corps members comprising 771 males and 1,673 females by the Chief Judge of Oyo state, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima.(NAN)

The Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIOTA) has reiterated the need for professionalism, cooperation, and respect among all sectors of law enforcement and public service.

CIOTA President, Prince Segun Obayendo, made the call in a statement by the institutes National Publicity Secretary, Mrs Chinwe Uwaegbute on Thursday in Abuja.

Obayendo said this followed a recent incident involving a Soldier and a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer, which he said brought public ridicule to both organisations.

He said:“This unfortunate confrontation, captured in the media, has highlighted the need for a renewed commitment for all stakeholders in the industry.

“ To advocate for professionalism, cooperation, and respect among all sectors of law enforcement and public service.

“CIOTA, as an institute, acknowledges the importance of maintaining order and safety on our roads, and the critical roles the military and civilian traffic management personnel play in achieving these goals.

“However, the incident in question has underscored the necessity for continuous training, communication, and collaboration among different law enforcement entities.”

According to Obayendo, stakeholders collaboration will ensure the safety of all citizens and the smooth functioning of our transport sector.

He urged both the military and LASTMA to investigate the incident thoroughly and take appropriate disciplinary actions, if warranted, against those involved in the altercation.

“In light of this regrettable incident, CIOTA urges all law enforcement agencies and traffic management bodies to engage in cross-training programs.

“That foster mutual understanding and cooperation by working together, sharing insights, and leveraging each other’s expertise.

“We can create an environment that upholds the principles of law, order, and public service while minimising conflicts that can undermine the reputation of both organisations,” he said.

The CIOTA boss then called on community leaders, stakeholders, and policymakers to join in the effort to prevent such incidents in the future.

Obayendo said this could be achieved by promoting open dialogue, transparency, and a shared commitment to maintaining the integrity of our transport systems.

“We should ensure that the incident between the soldier and the LASTMA officer serves as a catalyst for positive change rather than a point of division,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that there was a recent video shared on X(formerly twitter) where some yet to be identified soldiers on Aug.14 were seen beating up a LASTMA official in Ojota. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Election litigations: Group advocates amendment to Constitution

Election litigations: Group advocates amendment to Constitution

By Emmanuel Oloniruha

The Abuja School of Social and Political Thought (ASSPT) has advocated further amendment of Nigeria’s Constitution to allow conclusion of litigations before the inauguration of winners that emerged from elections.

The school’s Director, Dr Sam Amadi, made the call at a launch of a report titled on “Election without Democracy: Explanatory Notes on Nigeria’s 2023 elections.”

The event was organised by the Centre for Public Policy and Research (CPPR) in partnership with ASSPT, to review the outcome of the 2023 general elections and provide recommendations.

Concluding the litigations before inauguration of new administration, according to Amadi, will solve half of the challenges the country is currently facing as well reduce the burden on the judiciary.

“In the report, we looked at the build-up, preparation and others.

“There shouldn’t be any government formed when there are pending court cases yet to be concluded. It is actually illogical to ensure all cases end before inauguration.

“People should not be disfranchised, the electoral umpire should be transparent and accountable, and INEC should make rules based on fairness and not bias,” he said.

Amadi said that the report also suggested a committee should be set up by INEC to review all petitions from aggrieved parties.

He said that such review by the committee would help the aggrieved party to either be satisfied with the outcome of the election or head to court to seek redress.

“After the election, INEC should sit with its team or committee and receive petitions from parties for review.

“When they approve all results, the next stage is swearing of elected leaders.

“If these are done, it will reduce the cases of elections in court because they have been resolved through a fact-finding law application procedures.”

Amadi also advised Nigerians to accept the decisions of the judiciary on the various litigations at the judiciary.

“Nigerian judges are well trained and have the capacity to do justice. Once the court has spoken, we should all obey them,” Amadi said.

He also commended Justice Flora Azinge, the Chairman, State and House of Representatives Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kano, who publicly raised an alarm that some individual lawyers arguing their petitions before the tribunal, attempted to obstruct the course of justice with financial inducement.

Azinge, addressing the open court on Tuesday shortly before calling the first matter, revealed how a senior member of the bar offered one of her staff N10 million bribe for onward delivery to the panel.

Speaking further on the group’s report, Amadi said in spite of the promises by electoral umpire, the elections still recorded some challenges.

He said that the report already submitted to INEC contained facts and observations on different areas of the election, including electronic transmission of election results, and INEC’s adherence to its own rules and regulations in the conduct of the election.

Amadi advised INEC to ensure that it adhered to its rules and regulations at all times in the conduct of elections.

“All elections are done according to law, and there are laws that state who’s qualified to run for an election.

“If we don’t follow our laws according to who is qualified to contest for an election, then the rule of law is defeated,” he said.

Amadi added that the report was not a field report but analysis and event that took place during and after the elections.

“We do not engage in election monitoring but in observing and analysing the processes and procedures that guarantee fairness and credibility of voting and declaration of results.

“So we tracked all these processes and put together our report.

“The key point for us is that the expectation of Nigerians when going into the elections, was to have an election that will be fair, free, credible and generate national consensus for development.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Revenue harmonisation: FCT-IRS will address grey areas – acting chairman

Revenue harmonisation: FCT-IRS will address grey areas – acting chairman

By Philip Yatai

The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing all grey areas in the ongoing revenue harmonisation in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The acting Executive Chairman, FCT-IRS, Mr Haruna Abdullahi said this during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the revenue harmonisation in Abuja.

The MoU was signed between FCT-IRS and the Kuje Area Council at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some stakeholders were skeptical about the transparency and accountability in the revenue harmonisation initiative which made FCT-IRS the sole revenue collector in the FCT.

Abdullahi, who described the ongoing harmonisation as a “marathon and not a sprint”, assured stakeholders that all concerns would be considered and addressed accordingly.

“This is a new initiative and as always, there will be challenges. However, I want to assure stakeholders that the harmonisation process will not be in a sprint, but a marathon, taking one step at a time.

“Along the way, with determination and integrity, we will get there, and we will all be smiling at the end of the day,” he said.

He said that the MoU between FCT-IRS and Kuje Area Council would provide stakeholders with a clear framework that outlines respective roles and responsibilities in the harmonisation processes.

He assured FCT residents that every kobo contributed to the revenue purse would be accounted for and used judiciously.

On transparency and accountability, the chairman said that the FCT-IRS would leverage technology, strategic partnerships, and employ international best practices.

This, according to him, will ensure the needed transparency in the harmonisation procedures and processes.

“As we embark on this harmonisation journey, I want to assure all residents of the city that every kobo contributed will be accounted for and used judiciously.

“This is not just about Kuje, it is a template and beckon of hope on what can be achieved when organisations and government agencies come together to work for the good of all.”

Abdullahi assured stakeholders that the revenue service would continue to engage and clarify issues of concerns as they emerged in line with relevant laws and guidelines.

He said that the channels for clarifying every concern would always be opened for dialogue for all stakeholders to be on the same page.

He commended Mr Adesola Olusade, the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, for his dedication and support in the harmonsation journey, adding that his unwavering commitment had been inspiring.

Abdullahi also commended the Executive Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Mr Abdullahi Sabo, for his determination and steadfastness in supporting the revenue harmonisation process.

In his remarks, Sabo affirmed the council’s confidence in the capacity of the FCT-IRS to handle revenue collection on their behalf.

He expressed confidence that with FCT-IRS standardisation of existing data and automation of revenue collection, all levy and revenue collections in Kuje Area Council would be transmitted electronically.

He expressed optimism on the success of the project and indicated confidence that other area councils would equally sign the MoU with the FCT-IRS to strengthen the harmonisation drive.

Olusade, who witnessed the signing of the MoU, said that the revenue harmonisation drive was part of efforts to ensure ease of doing business in the FCT, which began in 2012.

He attributed the current challenges to the harmonisation process to lack of mutual trust and insufficient teamwork among relevant stakeholders.

The permanent secretary, however, expressed optimism that the harmonsation process would grow to fruition with the level of commitment being expressed by relevant stakeholders. (NAN)

DJs, major contributors to artistes’ journey to stardom – Dj Jimbo

DJs, major contributors to artistes’ journey to stardom – Dj Jimbo

Nigerian Disc Jockey, Jimi Sadare, known as DJ Jimbo, says the success of an artiste’s work lies solely in the hands of a DJ.

DJ Jimbo made the assertion during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos, upon his return to Nigeria after a European tour.

According to him, it is about time artistes in Nigeria and globally begin to recognise the contributions of DJs in their journey to stardom and turning any music to hits.

Dj Jimbo, who is also a fashion icon and content maven, said: “Every true artiste knows that the success of his material or song lies in the hands of a DJ.

“A DJ, be it at a radio or club, already has followers listening in or attending shows, concerts, festivals among others.

“His playing an artiste’s material automatically connects to the audience and if it is good enough, backed by popular DJ’s rotation, can turn the music into a hit for the artiste, that’s direct marketing.”

He, however, expressed his displeasure with DJs not properly recognised in an artiste’s quest to stardom and global acceptance.

“Out there, I don’t think DJs are getting the proper recognition in the journey to stardom of an artiste.

“A lot of artistes’ careers have been stifled because they did not have the means, wherewithal or knowledge as to get their music delivered to the street’s ears.

“With a DJ in the picture, half of the artiste’s job is done and as such, they need to be celebrated and compensated more.

“Using myself as an example, I bought an old album of an Ivorien Music Group over the weekend, in Paris.

“On listening to it, it brought back memories and I am going to share one of the hit tracks on my radio programme, which I have run for the last seven years, on Inspiration Family Radio,” he said.

Speaking on how he had fared, DJ Jimbo said that as DJ with over 30 genres of music in his portfolio and the fact that his listeners, crowd, guests or audience are paramount in his delivery, good beats are the most important part of a song.

“Two weeks ago, I was invited as a guest DJ, to entertain a diverse crowd of people, at a Lounge in Amsterdam.

“At some point while playing a Soulful House track,I decided to mix it with a Ghanian Afro Life track, which I knew the audience had never heard of, that fusion completely brought the house down.

“A professional DJ must have deep knowledge of music from basically every country of the world. With this music, he can arrange a top playlist to suit the crowd’s mood and carry the audience along,” he said.

According to DJ Jimbo, the rise of technology, specifically, Artificial Intelligence (AI) which basically is a computer that requires human intelligence such as speech recognition, visual perception and translation between languages, cannot take the place of a DJ.

He said that a DJ determines what to dish his crowd by physically seeing, assessing and feeling their energy.

“The brain’s ability to make use of what the eyes see, which is visual perception can not be handled by AI,” he said.

According to him, the presence of a DJ, his timely hype, dress sense, time to end the programme or acknowledge celebrities, can only be achieved by him.

He said he had an ‘electrifying’ European tour where he visited Paris, France, and engaged in rendezvous with esteemed producers, legendary DJs and fervent entertainment aficionados.

He said from France, he arrived Amsterdam, Holland, where he dialogued with top sculptor, Nelson Carrilho, who has numerous landmark pieces all over Europe, prominent promoters, lounge proprietors, and pioneering producers among others. (NAN)
