The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), has urged stakeholders in the Plateau business community on the need for improved trade facilitation to boost exportation.

The organisation made the call during its one day state-level workshop themed: “Increasing Non-oil Export through Trade Facilitation in Plateau” which held on Friday in Jos.

Dr. Ezra Yakusak, Chief Executive Officer of NEPC, while highlighting the advantages of trade facilitation and its benefits to the economic growth of the country noted that there are great gains for the business community.

“The truth is there are great potential gains from trade facilitation for both governments and the business community.Public entities will profit in terms of enhanced trade tax collection, better use of resources and increased trader compliance.

“A more efficient and transparent delivery of public services will allow the administration to maintain high security levels and effective government control.

“Traders will gain in terms of higher predictability and speed of operations and lower transaction costs, resulting in more competitive exports on global markets.

“Trade Facilitation strives to reduce the following: vast amount of bureaucracy, document requirements that lack transparency and involve duplication, lack of cooperation between traders and customs agencies, among others” he noted.

Similarly, Mr Samson Idowu, Regional Coordinator of NEPC, maintained that the global business community has improved in its approaches hence the need for Nigerians and the Plateau business community to do same as well.

“You will agree with me that more than any other time we need to facilitate trade, when we are talking about trade facilitation,we are talking about standardisation and simplification of procedures.

“Part of the challenges we are facing in this part of the world is that our procedures, our processes are not as simplified and harmonised as it should be, and we cannot continue to leave it to chance any longer.

“We need to work together as government agencies, policy makers and the private sector also, we need to come together and see how to simplify and improve on the processes, so that we can have a better economy and better processes.

“We are not alone in these processes, the United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT) is always meeting bi-annually to discourse procedures on how to move businesses forward, but the effort at that global level is not trickling down here.

“So as an organisation, we felt the need to key into those processes, there’s need to key into the global and national dynamics and see how Plateau can benefit in some of these developments which are very pertinent and important to our overall business development and economic activities ” he said.

On her part,Mrs Chundung Chuwang Director,Ministry of Commerce and Industry, representative of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry commended NEPC for its numerous activities in the state.

She urged the organisation to be more proactive in ensuring that the right products and persons are given the effective support required in promoting businesses in the state.

“Like I said earlier, beyond the roundtable discussions, we will need to see tangible things, you can see in this critical moment, where everything is almost crashing because of oil price and petrol.

“We are calling on the organisation to be more proactive this time, let it not just end on workshops and seminars or report writing, we need to see where we are involved.

“We are blessed in this country, especially here on the plateau where we have many untapped resources, the weather is there, the resources, both human and natural are there, but we are not exploiting them.

“This is a good opportunity for all stakeholders in the business community also to join hands with NEPC and learn,so as to improve on their businesses and the economy in general ” she said.

Also, Mr Dauda Gashi, Executive Director of Plateau Chamber of Commerce, Industry Mines and Agriculture (PLACCIMA), emphasised on the need for NEPC to move a step further beyond the mandate of trade facilitation and identity the right businesses so as to promote them accordingly.

“The mandate of NEPC in facilitating trade for export has been well made known to the people, I want them to move a step further, in getting the people that are really out with products, and are working on products for exportation, so that whatever they say in such workshops will be more effective to the right audiences and will make more tangible impact to them,” he said.

Gashi also admonished the organisation to engage on effective monitoring and evaluation of their outreaches to ensure effective utilisation of these trainings.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that some of the stakeholders present at the event are members of the business community, government agencies, private sector, Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) among others.(NAN)( www.nannews.ng)

A statement by AANI National Publicity Secretary, retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, on Friday in Abuja, expressed the association’s condolences to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and families of the fallen gallant officers and soldiers.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, families, friends, and loved ones of those who have lost their lives or wounded in these unfortunate incidents.

Embrace technology to remain relevant – ACAMB urges banks

Embrace technology to remain relevant – ACAMB urges banks

The Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks (ACAMB) has urged traditional financial institutions to embrace innovation and adapt in a changing environment to remain relevant.

The President of ACAMB, Mr Rasheed Bolarinwa, gave the advice at the association’s second National Stakeholder Conference 2023 edition in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference was: “Marketing Financial Services in Dynamic Times’’.

“As good news as this seems to be, for us as financial services providers, the rate at which fintechs and neo-banks have, and continue to transform the finance industry, is a wake-up call for the traditional financial institutions to keep up with latest innovations in order to succeed and thrive.

“Part of the imperative of these dynamic times is the demand on us in the industry to embrace innovation, adaptation, and agility if we must remain relevant in today’s marketplace,’’ he said.

According to him, the topic underscores the dynamism of the present time and the impact on the financial services industry.

Bolarinwa said among the key indicators of these dynamic times were macroeconomic headwinds that redefine the financial market as well as other markets across the board.

He added that rising inflationary trend, purchasing power parity and supply shocks occasioned by foreign exchange scarcity had a significant impact on production and ability of people to save money and invest.

He said digitalisation was also a major trend that was rapidly disrupting the general ecosystem including the financial services sector.

Bolarinwa noted that consumer’s behaviour was being altered as the mode of buying and selling shifted from the brick-and-mortar traditional mode to online purchases, while fostering increasing adoption of digital payment systems.

“It is not just that; demand for safer, faster and cost-efficient services is also getting higher as consumers become more sophisticated while competition also gets fiercer by the day,” he added.

The Lead Partner, CMC Connect LLP, Mr Yomi Badejo-Okunsanya, urged financial institutions to rebuild customer trust by finding new ways to meet their needs.

According to him, a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers Ltd. reveals that only 39 per cent of Nigerians trust their banks in contrast to the global average of 56 per cent.

He said, “this lack of trust impedes financial inclusion and digital service adaptation.

“When you are promoting your product, you make it look easy in the promotion but when I get there you make it very difficult.’’

Okunsanya urged the banks to know their customers and market, adding that the era of mass marketing was gone.

He said, “in those days when you wanted to sell financial products, you just put a couple of pretty girls in a sweet looking car and sometimes, the higher their skirt line, the better; but you cannot do that anymore.

“A customer has become so aware; the issues of corporate governance does not allow that anymore and also how many banks were there in those days compared to how many they are now? So, competition is key.’’

He also advised financial institutions and other industries to create a strong and active research and development unit in order to succeed.

Okunsanya noted that institutions were not investing enough in research and service.

He added that innovation and digital revolution was one of the most significant effects of the digital evolution in finance urging banks to democratise financial services, among others.

Tinubu tasks politicians, traditional rulers on unity

Tinubu tasks politicians, traditional rulers on unity

President Bola Tinubu has tasked Nigerian politicians and traditional rulers on sustaining nation’s unity.

He made this known in Abuja on Thursday at the public presentation of the book “Brutally Frank,” an autobiography of elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the book has 28 chapters with 688 pages.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, Tinubu said that traditional rulers and politicians had a stake in the country.

The President, therefore, called on all hands to be on deck to realise a great nation.

He further said that there was the need for all to manage Nigeria’s diversity for the unity of the country.

“We are greater when we are introduced as Nigerians than when we are introduced on the basis of ethnicity.

“This country is structurally complex and structurally difficult but can never be difficult to manage.

“Our plurality, our diverse cultures, languages, religion, constitute the source of our strength.”

“Since we came in, we have demonstrated enough for the management of this diversity through appointment of persons, citizens into key, strategic positions.’’

The President, who noted that the country was going through a difficult phase, assured Nigerians that a new nation would soon be birthed.

“These pains are the pains of birth, birth of a new nation. We know the removal of fuel subsidy has created some pains and that is why palliatives are being put in place.

“We can endure this for a moment; what we are going through today is for a better tomorrow. Nations are great because citizens have hope that tomorrow will be better than today,” he added.

The President further described Clark as a great man, an extraordinary citizen, whose name “is a household name throughout the country.

“Clark is a part of the Nigerian legion, the Iroko of the South-South and the Eagle of the nation.”

Also speaking, former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retired), chairman of the occasion, said the presence of dignitaries at the occasion was deserving to a man such as Clark.

“It is deserving that at his ripe age of 96 years, the Nigerian nation could gather in this befitting manner to honour him and pay deserving respects to his towering legacy of national service.

“My relationship with the Clark family, unknown to many, has been enduring over the years and has been expressed in deep bonds of friendship and mutual respect.

“The period in which Nigeria emerged from its most challenging political turmoil was one that needed great dexterity and empathy in the arduous task of reconciliation, rehabilitation, reintegration, reconstruction and rebuilding our bonds of oneness.”

While recalling the days of how Clark was chosen as Federal Commissioner, Gowon said that, “there was no better Nigerian for the job of Information Minister at that time.

“That was when we needed to show our warmness and empathy for one another as a people.

“The need to fill in the void created by Chief Anthony Enahoro’s exit was what gave Clark the job of Minister in the government which I headed.

“He became my confidant and the voice of the government, fearlessly defending the government and projecting its image. I found comfort in discussing government and other issues with Clark.”

Also, former President Goodluck Jonathan described the book as a good political-history book that most Nigerians would want to read from the front page to the back page.

“It will be useful to our young people,” Jonathan said.

Jonathan said that Clark was a person whose vision was “for Nigeria; for the security of this country and for the unity of this country.

“Clark is one of those few Nigerians that his name should be written in letters of gold in our political-history book.”

Similarly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio said the author of the book was a true elder statesman and a phenomenal patriot.

“Clark has remained “Brutally Frank” in his submissions over the years. I am therefore, not surprised that his autobiography is titled “Brutally Frank.”

“I have no doubt that the wisdom and perspectives shared in this great book, will offer us a chance to reflect on the journey we’ve undertaken as a society and to glean valuable lessons that can guide our future endeavours.”

In his vote of thanks, the author of the book, Clark called for the restructuring of Nigeria.

The event had in attendance traditional rulers, including the Ooni  of Ife; Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Amanayabo of Twon-Brass; Alfred Ditte-Spiff, the Emir of Kano; Aminu Ado Bayero, serving and former governors and serving and non-serving senators.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Scholars unveil book in honour of former NDA commandant

By Sumaila Ogbaje

No fewer than 52 scholars on Thursday, unveiled a book titled, “Warfare Command and Capacity Building” a festschrift in honour of retired Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Yusuf, the immediate past Commandant, Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA).

The book presentation, which was done at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, had in attendance the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya and representatives of the Defence and service chiefs.

The book was re-edited by five scholars led by the Provost of the Mational Defence College Centre of Strategic Studies and Research, Prof. Adams Ahmed.

Others are Prof. Jacob Akindapo, Onipe Yahaya, Nkechi Egbe and Bem Audu.

Speaking on the book and the honouree, Lt.-Gen. Yahaya described Gen. Yusuf as a professional military officer who gave his best to the development and advancement of the Nigerian army and capacity development of personnel.

He said that Yusuf was one of the senior officers that assisted him to succeed as army chief and when he served as theatre commander in the northeast.

Yahaya said the book captured three main areas of command, welfare and capacity building.

He said that Gen. Yusuf was versatile in all areas while in service.

“If you excel in command, you have perhaps excelled in everything and the celebrant has succeeded as commander.

“These three key areas are necessary for somebody to succeed, not only in the military but in life,” the former COAS said.

In his remarks, Yusuf said the driving force behind the book was to give back to the army, the armed forces and the country that had invested so much in developing his capacities.

He said a lot was invested to develop his capacities right from the Army Children School to Nigerian Military School and NDA.

According to him, what the scholars have done is collate all his experiences, particularly in counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations to enable younger generation of officers to learn from.

“So bringing our experiences, we focus on the capacity building of the future generation of officers for armed forces and already we are seeing the impact of what this capacity building programme is doing.

“For example, one of the officers out there, a naval officer while on exercise, a personnel fell overboard. This naval officer who has been trained in the amphibious aspect was able to jump into the water and under 18 minutes, rescued this rating.

“We are beginning to see the exploits that the young officers that just left NDA are making barely one year ago. We are getting the feedback of their exploits in the field.

“The ones from NDA that we sent to the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, you saw on the documentary there they are still on training but have won laurels, which shows that the training they are receiving in the academy in Nigeria is yielding the desired outcome,” he said.

Prof. Ahmed who led the editing of the book said the focus was on making impact in whatever responsibility one is given.

He said the book would assist writers to do scholarly work on the armed forces of Nigeria and the military generally, in view of scarcity of materials in this area.

The Book Reviewer, Prof. Oloabasi Akpan, said the book  had 51 chapters written by 52 authors and edited by five scholars with in-depth scholarly works covering different areas.

Akpan said that the first chapter captured the profile and early life of Maj.-Gen. Yusuf who grew through the ranks in the army and retired as a general and commandant of the nation’s elite military institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that several individuals including Yusuf’s superiors, subordinates and course mates poured encomium on him. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Young Moms Support Initiative, a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), has trained no fewer than 500 women in different skills to enable them become self-reliant and contribute to national development.

The Founder, Executive Director of the NGO, Dr Vivian Sonny-Nsirim said in a statement on Friday in Abuja that the training was for three days.

Sonny-Nsirim, who is also the Ugochinyere I of Igbo land and Madubia of Uke Kingdom, said that the women were trained in baking, beverages, cereals and custard making among others.

She explained that their target was for the women have strong means of livelihood through which they can raise the economic status of their families.

“The actual goal was to bring out the potential in women, to seize their economic opportunities by learning how to boost their productivity and maximise income.

“The organisation came up with the idea of training the women on various skills to enable them become financially stable, as joblessness was a major cause of insecurity in the country.

“Women have good potentials for greatness but they need a little push.

“We want to ensure that women especially widows, single mothers and young girls who dropped from schools, have a viable source of livelihood,” Sonny-Nsirim said.

According to her, the organisation believes it is important to help women acquire skills so that they would not consider anti social behaviours or crime as option for their daily survival.

Sonny-Nsirim lamented that most of the women, including widows, were passing through a lot of challenges, hence the need for such economic impact training.

She appealed to Federal and State governments and individuals to partner with the organisation to train more women in the society.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
