Buhari inaugurates 700 made-in-Nigeria troops-carrying trucks

President Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated 700 Ashok Leyland troops-carrying vehicles for the Armed Forces of Nigeria on Friday.

The inauguration was done virtually.

Buhari said the procurement of the vehicles was in response to the prevailing security challenges bedeviling the nation.

He said the vehicles were assembled locally by Stallion Motors for the armed forces, saying it marked a milestone in the annals of the Nigerian military, especially as troops were engaged in operations in various theatres.

He said the procurement was a demonstration of his commitment and the importance the government attached to the fight against insecurity in the overall safety and security of the country.

According to him, insecurity is not peculiar to Nigeria as it had impacted negatively on global, regional and sub-regional peace and security.

It has given rise to massive continental immigration, internally displaced persons and great humanitarian crisis across the world, he noted.

“Consequently governments had employed varying degrees of hard and soft power elements to tackle the evolving insecurity.

“As a country, we are very proud that in the first 10 years, we have been able to revitalise our armed forces for the full restoration of Nigeria’s territorial integrity that was once violated by Boko Haram insurgents and other forms of criminality.

“Some of you may recall that in my inaugural speech as president, I promised to put an end to Boko Haram insurgency, which hitherto had posed a grave threat to Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

“In fulfilling this promise, I made professionalism and capacity building of the armed forces, a major security thrust of this administration.

“Training and acquisition of brand new platforms and other supporting equipment for the armed forces of Nigeria and other security agencies were intensified.

“The procurement process of military hardware was simplified, thereby reducing inefficiency and corruption and adequately improved our military so that they could effectively discharge their constitutional responsibilities,’’ he said.

The president expressed confidence that the newly-acquired vehicles would increase the capacity of the armed forces, thereby adding to the conduct of security operations.

He charged the armed forces to consolidate on the gains they had achieved towards sustained peace and stability in the country.

The president also commended the armed forces for the resolve to defeat insurgency and the supportive roles in maintaining law and order as was demonstrated in the just-concluded presidential and National Assembly elections.

“I want to assure you all that this administration will continue to support you in every respect, including improving troops’ welfare and those of their families.

“The Federal Government remains, steadfast and committed to winning the war against insurgency and other criminalities,’’ Buhari stressed.

In his remarks, Minister of Defence, retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, said the procurement was another significant milestone amongst many initiatives of the Buhari administration in repositioning the nation’s military to tackle contemporary security challenges.

Magashi said Nigeria had been facing myriad of daunting security challenges, such as insurgency, militancy, kidnapping as well as cattle rustling and banditry in several parts.

He said the security challenges had been confronted with a lot of zeal and professionalism through the transformational reforms of the current administration.

According to him, the transformation process has been anchored on three pillars of capacity building, restructuring/reorganisation and troops’ welfare.

“It is worthy of note that the process of transforming the armed forces over the years has not been easy given the numerous multi-dimensional security and economic challenges facing the country.

“Notwithstanding this, the current administration has security as a priority in its agenda, hence the need to equip the armed forces with all necessary platforms to ensure peace and security.

“Very importantly, this administration is cognisant of the significance of troops and logistics mobility for effective operational efficiency.

“It is worthy to state that this project was initiated by the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014 for Messrs Stallion Motors Ltd to supply 50 buses and 700 troops-carrying vehicles to the armed forces.

“Notably, the company delivered the 50 buses in February 2015 while the 700 troops-carrying vehicles were retained due to some administrative errors in the contract.

“Consequently, the ministry constituted a team led by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Kana, to interphase with the company to resolve all pending issues as well as facilitate the delivery of the vehicles,’’ he said.

The Permanent Secretary in his remarks said it became imperative to think inward and to provide local preventive and protective mechanisms to fortify the nation’s critical assets, formations and borders.

Kana said the engagement of an indigenous company was hinged on Federal Government’s conviction to uphold President Buhari’s desire to promote the utilisation of indigenous technology as enshrined in the Executive Order 5 of 2018.

He said the thrust of the E05 was the recognition of the vital role of science, technology and innovation in national economic development, particularly in the area of promoting Made-in-Nigeria Goods and Services.

According to him, the procurement of the made-in-Nigeria Ashok Leyland Troops Carrying Vehicles is one of such efforts made by government to encourage local companies in their efforts to manufacture equipment needed to fight insurgency.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari and the Chief Defence Staff, Gen. lucky Irabor were physically present at the inauguration. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Low women participation in technology cost low income countries $1trn – Tallen

125 total views today

By Justina Auta

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen, says women’s exclusion from the digital world has reduced one trillion dollars from the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of low and middle income countries.

Tallen said at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, ahead of the commemoration of the 2023 International Women’s Day (IWD) that this occurred over the last decade.

The theme of this year’s edition is: “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”.

According to her, bringing women and other marginalised groups into technology has greater potential for innovations that meet women’s needs and promote gender equality.

“The lack of women inclusion, by contrast, comes with massive costs and according to the UN Women 2022 Snap Short Report, women’s exclusion from the digital world.

“This has reduced one trillion dollars from the GDP of low- and middle-income countries in the last decade.
“This loss will grow to $1.5 trillion by 2025 without action.

“Reversing this trend according to the report will require tackling the problem of online violence, which 38 per cent of women had personally experienced,” she said.

The minister stressed the need for gender-responsive approach to innovation, technology and digital education that could increase the awareness of women and girls regarding their rights and civic engagement.

She also called for the adoption of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses by girls to address discrimination, gender bias and improve participation in all spheres.

“I therefore ask that, teachers and educational institutions be supported to consciously remove gender biases and stereotypes in our educational environments, textbooks and didactic materials.

“It starts with making women’s contributions to STEM visible, including through connecting young women and girls with STEM professionals and mentors,” she said.

Also, Mr Marthias Schumale, UN resident Coordinator, said they would enhance involvement of women and girls in technology to increase gender inclusion.

“We will continue to invest into technology. And as we do that, we will prioritise women and girls because collectively we can make the world of technology and innovation inclusive by working together,” he said.

Ms Uller Mueller, UNFPA Country Representative, harped on the role technology plays to expand networks, opportunities, and minds.

Mueller, represented by Ms Erika Goldson, UNFPA Deputy Representative, however, noted that technology was increasingly misused and weaponised, with women and girls disproportionately targeted.

“This can take the form of image-based abuse, sextortion, harassment, hate speech, cyberbullying and doxing.

“ Data tell us that 97 per cent of girls between 11 to16 years in Nigeria have experienced unwanted sexual approaches in chat rooms, social networking sites or emails.

“Over 7.89 per cent of this group have been sent sexual images or content, 57 per cent of women have had their videos or images online abused or misused,” she said.

She added that UNFPA was developing safety and ethics guidelines for practitioners designing technology for gender-based violence prevention and response.

Mueller said that technology companies are engaged to involve women in design processes from the outset.

“Technology is essential to advancing gender equality. When women and girls can access and use technology safely, they can amplify their voices and exercise their agency and autonomy.

“This is giving them a platform that can transform their future – and ours,” she said.

Also, Prof. Ibrahim Pantami, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, said they would train 200 women on ICT and digital economy in March to reduce the gender gap in technology innovation.

Pantami was represented by Mrs Iklima Musa, Special Assistant to the minister on Strategy and Innovation.

Ms Kemisola Bolarinwa, President, Women in ICT Foundation, launched the prototype of a “Smart Bra Device” to detect abnormalities like cancer cells.

Bolarinwa also added that they invented a wrist watch and necklace to track movement, in a bid to curb insecurity, particularly kidnapping. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CSOs task INEC on challenges witnessed in Feb. 25 election

By Angela Atabo

Connected Development (CODE)and its partners, have tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to address challenges experienced during the Feb. 25 election, ahead of the Governorship and Houses of Assembly Election.

Hamzat Lawal, Chief Executive Officer, CODE, who spoke on behalf of the group said this when he presented the interim statement on the process and conduct the presidential and National Assembly elections in Abuja on Thursday.

Lawal said that the group deployed observers in polling units across the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs ) of the country as well as the Federal Capital Territory, saying that the findings raised concerns about the management of the election.

Lawal tasked INEC on swift deployment and early opening of polls, professional conduct of security personnel and INEC’s strict adherence to the use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

He said that the BVAS should be used for biometric accreditation and electronic transmission of results from polling unit as stipulated by the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC 2023 Election guidelines for the conduct of election.

“The Governorship and State Assembly election is yet another opportunity for INEC to redeem her image, and earn the trust and confidence of the electorates in our electoral process.

“More importantly, INEC should ensure transparency of the result management and collation process and make certain that polling unit results are uploaded timely on the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV).

“The Uzabe election observation mission was focused on the election day’s process; focusing on the quality of the election, with the notion that if the process is right, the outcome will be right and accepted by all.

“Drawing from these observations, CODE and her partners conclude that the 2023 Presidential and National Assembly Election failed to meet the basic threshold of a credible election, as it failed short of Citizen’s expectations, INEC’s assurances, and benchmark of international election best practice,” Lawal said.

He said that the interim statement brought to light some of the discrepancies observed like delay in commencement of polls, low adherence to Electoral laws and slow or non upload of results among others.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Maiduguri power plant, giant step towards achieving gas, power mandate – NNPCL

By Ella Anokam

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) says the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP) project is a giant step towards achieving its gas and power mandate to add 50MW into the national grid generation.

Malam Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), NNPCL, made this known on Thursday during the commissioning of the 50-Megawatt Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant project by President Muhammadu Buhari in Borno.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that due to the unfortunate attacks of insurgents which destroyed three towers of electricity power lines in Maiduguri, President Buhari in April 2021, directed the NNPC Ltd., to restore power supply to Maiduguri and its environs.

Kyari said on the directive of the president, a 32 MW gas fired power plant was designed and built in 16 months, which was unprecedented and had been successfully test-run and confirmed ready by the president.

He said the commissioning of the emergency thermal power plant by the president would open a new chapter
of the NNPCL commercial energy for on grid and off grid capital markets.

According to him, the Maiduguri emergency power project will be scaled up to 50MW shortly, the first thermal plant of this scale in the whole of the Northeast.

The GCEO said the interventions of the Ministry of Power had restored the traditional 330KV line in Maiduguri and provided another redundancy of 33KV line from Damaturu to Maiduguri.

“The combined effect of the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant and the replacement of the transmission lines makes Maiduguri the most sufficiently capital city in Nigeria.

“Obviously, it is a new power hub in the region, we may very soon see power exports to neighbouring countries from Maiduguri.

“As a commercial enterprise, NNPC sees this project as an opportunity to monitise our abundance natural resource by expanding access to energy to support economic growth, industrialisation and job creation across the country,” he said.

He said Maiduguri has been the commercial nerve centre of the Northeast for more than a century.

He added that it represented a huge market due to its demographic advantage and geographical accessibility to sub regional markets including Republic of Niger, Chad, Central Afrique Republic, Sudan and Mali among others.

He said that in spite of these huge opportunities, energy poverty had continued to restrain business communities in Maiduguri and its environs from expanding their market frontiers to achieve the full potentials.

The GCEO said the project provided better investment climate and opportunity to advance the Federal Government’s domestic gas utilisation mandate while supporting the power industry, government of Borno and stakeholders to achieve sustainable energy supply.

This, he said, in order to ensure sustainable operations the power plant was equipped with a natural gas system for energy supply.

“Mr President, currently NNPCL and its partners are delivering 800MW to the national grid from Afam two, Afam six in Okpai phase one thermal plants with combined installed capacity of over 1,100 MW.

“We have also completed Okpai phase two project that will add up to 320MW of power to our national grid. We are also progressing with other power projects across the country, including those along the AKK pipeline root.

“NNPCL appreciates the collaboration of the ministry, relevant power stakeholders and the Borno state government in achieving this milestone,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

A Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna on Friday transferred a breach of trust and cheating suit filed against a popular Kannywood actress, Hadiza Aliyu-Gabon to an Upper Sharia Court.
The Judge, Malam Isiyaku Abdulrahman transferred the case to the upper shari’a court in Tudun Wada, following the complainant’s counsel, Malam Nurudeen Murtala’s prayer.
While transferring the case, the judge accused the counsel of wanting to waste the court’s time.
”You have two options. One is for me to strike out the case or transfer it to another court,” the judge said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bala Musa a civil servant had dragged the actress to court for refusing to marry him.
Musa told the court, “So far I have spent N396,000 on her. Anytime she asks for money, I give her without hesitation with the hope that we will marry”.
The defendant who spoke through her counsel, Mr Mubarak Sani had denied knowing Musa, saying she had never seen or met him and had no relationship with him whatsoever.
The complainant’s counsel had presented a copy of bank statement to the court and told the court that some four persons were the recipients of the money claimed to be sent to the defendant.
Two out of the four, Fatima Abdullahi and Abdullahi Yusuf claimed to be the defendant’s friend and personal assistant, respectively.
They pleaded guilty for impersonating the actress and receiving money in her name praying court to forgive them.
Briefly after the proceedings, the actress counsel told newsmen that they wanted the court to discharge and acquit his client as she had not cheated or breached any trust as accused earlier.

1.5bn people live with hearing loss – WHO

By Franca Ofili

The World Health Organisation says an estimated 1.5 billion people globally live with hearing loss.

The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti, made this known in her message to mark the 2023 World Hearing Day with theme: “Ear and hearing care for all! Let’s make it a reality”.

She also said that the number could rise to over 2.5 billion by 2030.

The News Agency of Nugeria (NAN) reports that the World Hearing Day is held on March  3 each year to raise awareness on how to prevent deafness and hearing loss as well as promote ear and hearing care across the world.

Moeti said that the burden of ear and hearing problems reflects significant inequalities disproportionately impacting on the marginalised populations across the globe.

She said in Africa, an estimated 135 million people are battling with ear and hearing problems as medical conditions, saying the number has been on the increase.

Moeti said that at the current rate, it was likely that by the year 2050  about  338 million people would be affected by visual  and hearing problems in Africa.

The WHO official said the day was an opportunity to raise awareness on the  preventive measures as well as  promote ear and hearing care worldwide.

She explained that It was a favourable day to reiterate the message on preventing and addressing common ear and hearing problems as nearly 30 billion dollars were being lost due to the collective failure to address the problem in the African Region.

According to her, more than 60 per cent of the common ear diseases and hearing loss can be detected and often managed at the primary level of medical  care.

“We acknowledge recent efforts made by the relevant bodies  towards  addressing  hearing and visual problems”

“The ongoing support to Kenya to establish a Center of Excellence for Eye Health Clinic, Eye Health and Oral Health is a welcome step.

”Also, with our support, countries are developing and implementing national strategies for ear health,” she said.

According to her, in 2022, Kenya, Malawi, and Guinea launched and started to implement national ear and hearing care strategies.

She said that there was also a regional analysis on ear and hearing care, including country profiles for all Member States.

Moeti said that two modules on ear and hearing care management for primary health care workers were developed, adding that it would be integrated into the WHO PEN packages.

“Here are the most burning issues affecting patients: Many people with hearing loss do not know how and where to find help or do not have access to the needed services.

“This greatly impacts on the lives of those affected, their families, and their communities.

“Also, the excessive burden of these conditions is also due to the limited number of ear, nose and throat specialists and audiologists available in the countries

“In most places, access to ear and hearing care continues to be limited to highly specialised centers and clinics.

“Integrating ear and hearing care into primary care services is possible through training and capacity building to address the challenges”.

She said  WHO had recently launched a primary ear and hearing care training manual intended to inform doctors, nurses, and other health workers to achieve universal coverage.

She called on  governments to prioritise ear and hearing care health programmes as part of their universal healthcare agenda and increase political and financial commitment.

She further advocated for increase newborn hearing screening services, stressing that effective accessibility of hearing aid technology, are critical starting points.

Moeti urged hearing and the visually impaired individuals suffering to learn more about their conditions and seek care when needed, including attending hearing screening services.

According to Moeti, the World Report on Hearing has been developed in response to the World Health Assembly resolution, adopted in 2017 as a means of providing guidance for Member States to integrate ear and hearing care into their national health plans. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has accepted the result of the Saturday presidential election result as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, stated this at a news conference on the outcome of the presidential election, in Abuja on Thursday.

Gabam said in spite of the challenges witnessed during the election, SDP stood  by the declaration of Sen. Bola Tinubu as the president-elect by INEC.

He noted that the election has its challenges including the use of Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) and the uploading of election results on INEC Result Viewing Portal.

He therefore advised candidates and other aggrieved parties on the outcome of the election to seek redress peacefully and legally.

He commended INEC, under the leadership of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, for pulling through in the face of all odds, urging it to perfect its system before the  March 11 governorship and house of assembly elections.

“The election has been won and lost, what is right in the true interest of our country, is for all grievances to be addressed through the appropriate channels and very responsibly.

“Our party believes strongly in the nation’s judicial system as capable of addressing the various issues from the elections, concerns expressed, and for it to always do the needful.

“We also note that democratic consolidation for national unity and sustainable growth and development is the imperative of the times.

“The SDP call on the political class and the general public to eschew violence in their actions and pronouncements.

“They should in practical terms and manifestly, work for peace and social order in the larger interest of our country.”

Gabam advised the judiciary to be fair to all political parties and candidates that would be seeking redress on the election.

“They have the responsibility to prove to the world and Nigerians that they would be fair and just to all parties.

“Our law must work irrespective of whoever is involved,”Gabam said.

He congratulated the president-elect, Sen. Bola Tinubu on his victory, urging him to take deliberate and practical steps to bring other candidates as well as other aggrieved parties on board in his administration.

“Bring the country together through a government of national unity to fix our obvious national cracks, address the failings, heal the land and fast-track the process of national reconciliation.

Gabam commended the performance of the party’s presidential and national assembly candidates and appreciated Nigerians for trusting the party with their votes.

He said that the party came sixth in the presidential election, and won two senatorial and four House of Representatives seats.

He said that, while the party would not challenge the presidential election in court, it would however challenge the national assembly elections in places it believed the SDP won.

He pledged the party’s continued support for its candidates in the state elections, expressing the confidence that SDP would win some governorship and state Houses of Assembly seats.

Gabam said that SDP was not party to any protests on the 2023 general elections and has not issued any directives in that respect because it believes in the peace and oneness of Nigeria.9

“However, every party has the right to protest, but we are not party to any protest,”Gabam said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
