Commission Boss Urges Staff to Embrace Automation, Digital Tools

By Vivian Emoni

The Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Dr Mohammed Shehu, has urged staff of the Commission to embrace automation and digital tools in their operations.
Shehu made this known at a two-day workshop on Performance Management System (PMS) held in Abuja.
Represented by Alhaji Shuaibu Agaka, the Commissioner representing Kwara State on the Commission, Shehu said the use of digital tools would minimise human error and enable more accurate data collection, processing, and analysis.
He explained that the workshop aimed to improve staff performance and enhance overall productivity.
“This training we are having today on the Performance Management System is intended to replace the Annual Performance Evaluation Report previously used by the Commission,” he said.
According to him, the Federal Government’s digital transformation drive encourages workers to adopt technology to streamline processes, reduce reliance on manual tasks, and enhance productivity.
“Automation and digital tools reduce human error and enable more accurate data collection, processing, and analysis. This is what we want our staff to embrace so that the analogue system becomes a thing of the past,” Shehu said.
He further revealed that the Commission had recently conducted a promotion examination using a digital platform, describing it as a step towards encouraging staff to fully adopt technology.
“Digital transformation will lead to more efficient, effective, and citizen-centric services,” he added.
Shehu also urged the staff to mentally prepare for the evolving work environment.
“If you do not shake into the system, the system will likely shake you out,” he warned.
“You must change your mindset, mental orientation, and attitude to fully embrace the changes ahead.”
He called on participants to make the most of the training and commit themselves to continuous improvement as the Commission transitions to the new system.
Also speaking, the Commission’s Secretary, Mr Joseph Nwanze, described RMAFC as a strategic institution that must remain forward-looking. He said the training was designed to equip staff for digital transformation.
“This training is also intended to encourage staff to develop new skills, enhancing their employability,” Nwanze said.
“Learn as much as you can and be ready to unlearn practices that no longer align with our new orientation.”
He also advised participants to maintain professionalism, adding that proper dress codes and punctuality fostered respect, discipline, and productivity in the workplace.
On his part, Mr Emmanuel Ohiro, a PMS consultant from Relief Line Nigeria, commended the initiative and urged participants to take the training seriously, stressing that it would significantly improve service delivery.
One of the participants, Mrs Elizabeth Keghku, thanked the Commission for the opportunity, noting that the training would help staff better understand RMAFC’s goals, objectives, and expectations.

NAPTIP rescues 8 stolen kids from Delta orphanage

NAPTIP rescues 8 stolen kids from Delta orphanage

Rescue

By Aderogba George

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has announced the rescue of eight children suspected to have been stolen and kept at a private orphanage in Asaba, Delta State.

This is contained in a statement on Tuesday by NAPTIP’s Press Officer, Mr Vincent Adekoye.

The operation was conducted with support from the Department of State Services (DSS), Anambra State Command.

Also involved were the Nigerian Police Force, Delta State Command, the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, and civil society organisations based in Kano. The orphanage is reportedly run by a senior official.

The operator is said to be a member of the executive committee of the Association of Orphanage Operators in Nigeria. Investigations revealed the children were trafficked from Kano and other northern states.

The children were allegedly stolen by an inter-state child trafficking syndicate and transported to the South–South and South–Eastern regions of Nigeria.

Adekoye recalled similar concerns raised by parents back in 2017.

He explained the syndicate operated in two groups: one builds trust within communities and abducts children, while the other targets unaccompanied minors at parks, motor terminals, or while running errands.

Adekoye noted trafficking escalated in 2022, with more than 25 children reportedly abducted from the region, sparking public outrage and prompting civil society groups to demand urgent action from relevant authorities.

A group called Protection Against The Abduction and Missing of Our Children (PATAMOOC) submitted a petition to NAPTIP on Dec. 15, 2022, urging the rescue of missing Kano children.

NAPTIP then launched a discreet investigation to trace the children’s whereabouts.

Intelligence-driven operations followed in Anambra and Delta States, though the Awka operation failed as the syndicate moved the children overnight.

However, the Asaba operation uncovered more than 70 children at the privately-run orphanage, including 15 newborn babies. Out of these, eight were identified as those allegedly stolen from Kano State.

Reacting to the rescue, NAPTIP Director-General Hajia Binta Adamu-Bello condemned orphanages that served as safe havens for trafficked children, emphasising the alarming number of minors found in a single facility.

“This operation was intelligence-driven and executed with precision, in collaboration with our security partners and civil society actors,” she said, confirming the children were identified and reunited with their families.

“NAPTIP is seriously concerned about the activities of these so-called orphanages and care homes. Seventy children in one facility, and that number keeps growing daily,” Adamu-Bello added with concern.

She further revealed that the orphanage owner had been evading investigation and spreading falsehoods about NAPTIP on social media, instead of cooperating with authorities or presenting himself for questioning.

“We have told him to report to our Kano Zonal Command and cooperate with the investigation.

“The children have been handed over to the appropriate authorities in Kano State,” she stated.

She called on State Ministries of Women Affairs to intensify oversight of orphanages and care homes, many of which were rapidly increasing.

NAPTIP will continue enforcing its oversight regulations accordingly. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Wednesday says
all federal airports managed by the authority are fully insured.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, gave the clarification while responding to claims that the airports were not insured.

Kuku also clarified that the insurance were up-to-date, with available records to back it up.

She said “de-rubberisation and runway hygiene has been done; infact, records are available to show.

“Other areas I will concur are habitation and community issues that have impacted the wildlife and bird strikes and we have been working closely with relevant stakeholders to control.

“The historical runway issues based on structural and engineering issues on some of the runways, along with those exceeding their lifespan are being corrected gradually with complete overhauls and maintenance.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that de-rubberisation is the process of removing rubber deposits on the runway to enhance landing grip of aircraft tyres.

In other words, it is aimed at better landing on the runways.(NAN)(www.nanews.ng)

Divergent views trail Rivers’ 6-month emergency rule

Divergent views trail Rivers’ 6-month emergency rule

Rule

Some stakeholders in Rivers politics have expressed divergent views on the six-month emergency rule in the state, with some describing it as ineffective while others said it restored peace.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that President Bola Tinubu, on March 18, declared a state of emergency on Rivers due to heightened political crisis.

The crisis was as a result of disagreement between Gov. Siminalayi Fubara and his political godfather, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, over control of state political resources.

The President suspended Fubara and members of Rivers House of Assembly, and announced retired Vice Admiral Ibom-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator of the state.

Analysing the impact of the emergency rule, Mr Egele Bright, a Peoples Democratic Party  Chieftain in Andoni Local Government Area, said that Ibas restored peace to the state.

Bright said that, as the Sole Administrator, Ibas politically stabilised the state and doused tension, which was not there before the emergency rule.

“The smooth conduct of local government council elections and the swearing-in of chairmen and councillors across the 23 LGAs have also driven political stability to the grassroots,” he added.

In his contribution, Mr Henry Ekini, National Legal Adviser of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, described the emergency rule as avoidable.

He said the administrator had no mandate from the people and did not deliver on welfare and infrastructure.

Ms Annkio Briggs, a Niger Delta activist, said that Ibas did not implement key projects such as Trans-Kalabari Road and coastal bridges.

She said that the emergency rule denied the citizens elected leadership and undermined human capital development.

On Fubara’s reinstatement, Briggs said that there were concerns since the National Assembly was on recess.

Comrade Savior Oscar, President South-South Youths Initiative, a civil society group, called for an investigation into the six-month administration of Ibas.

Oscar said that Ibas conducted local government elections in the state and that were criticised by many Nigerians.

According to him, the emergency rule negatively affected  socio-economic activities in Rivers.

A lawyer, Mr Ambrose Igwe, expressed dissatisfaction that Ibas could not unveil those behind crude oil pipeline explosions that painted the state as unsafe.

On his part, Prof. Daniel Mbee, Director of the Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Development Studies, urged Rivers residents to focus on the  development of the state.

He said that Ibas had done his part although  Rivers had stagnated compared to states such as Lagos.

Meanwhile,  Prof. Ibibia Worika, Secretary to the State Government, has announced commencement of the state’s transition from emergency rule to democratic governance.

He announced an inter-denominational church thanksgiving as part of transition activities.

Commenting on the planned transition, a lawyer, Mr Gogonte Obadiah, noted that the state of emergency was  expected to last for an initial period of six months, which would elapse on Sept. 18.

Mr Neo Wilcox, a Port Harcourt resident, said that personal or collective interests  were expected to  play out upon Fubara’s reinstatement, urging  a common ground and necessary compromise  in the interest of the state.

Mr Felix Ogeh, a businessman, urged collective efforts in protecting peace in Rivers to avoid more crisis.

Nigeria, WJC Sign MoU on Wildlife Protection

MoU
By Doris Esa, Edited by Sadiya Hamza

The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC), an international non-governmental organisation based in The Hague, Netherlands, to strengthen wildlife protection in the country.

The MoU provides a framework for cooperation to combat transnational organised criminal networks involved in trafficking wildlife, fish, and timber.

The agreement was signed by Prof. Innocent Barikor, Director-General of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), and Stephen Carmody, Chief of Investigations at the WJC, represented by Abim Isafiade, Regional Manager for West and Central Africa.

Barikor said the MoU would boost intelligence-sharing, enhance forensic and legal collaboration, and support future work of the Nigerian Wildlife Law Enforcement Task Force.

“This MoU aligns with Nigeria’s obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and demonstrates our government’s determination to conserve biodiversity and protect threatened species. Together with WJC, we will make Nigeria a hostile environment for wildlife traffickers,” he said.

Executive Director of WJC, Olivia Swaak-Goldman, noted that the partnership would inject new momentum into Nigeria’s enforcement efforts.

“By working with NESREA and the Nigerian Wildlife Law Enforcement Task Force, we can sustain and deepen reforms, ensuring Nigeria continues to lead in intelligence-led enforcement,” she said.

The MoU reflects the shared commitment of NESREA and WJC to fight wildlife crime, dismantle criminal networks, and safeguard species from extinction.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

NYCN wants National Theatre recognised as IATF 2027 venue

NYCN wants National Theatre recognised as IATF 2027 venue

By Taiye Olayemi

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on the Federal Government to designate the renovated National Arts Theatre as official venues for the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2027 in Lagos.

Mr Damilare Kuti, NYCN Lagos Mainland Coordinator, in a statement on Monday in Lagos, said making the National Theatre an IATF 2027 venue would relaunch the renovated edifice into national and international prominence.

The Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) is scheduled to hold in Lagos in 2027.

He also urged the newly elected Lagos Mainland Council Chairman, Mr Jubril Emilagba, to join Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu in supporting the campaign to host the event at the National Theatre.

“The National Theatre has all it takes to host the IATF 2027.

“We must all rally support for its successful hosting of the continental expo.

“Hosting IATF 2027 in the National Theatre would help it regain its lost glory as the premium destination for world-class events,” he said.

Also, Deborah Adepoju, NYCN Lagos Mainland Spokesperson, said the council was delighted that Lagos was named host city for the 2027 IATF, organised by AfCFTA and Afreximbank.

“Going by this year’s edition, IATF 2027 is expected to attract over 120,000 visitors to Nigeria and generate more than US$50 billion in trade deals.

“Over 2,100 exhibitors and 20 Heads of State are also expected, underscoring the growing importance of intra-African trade and the creative industries in driving economic growth.

“We believe this would not only boost the economy of Lagos, but also create thousands of temporary and permanent jobs for our teeming youths, as many foreign companies would open shops in Lagos afterwards,” Adepoju said.

Nigeria was named host country for the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2027, with Lagos as the host city.

The announcement was made during the 2025 edition, which ended last week in Algiers, Algeria.

Now renamed the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, the National Theatre has remained largely unused after the completion of its renovation by the Bankers’ Committee since Aug. 28, 2024.

The renovation covered several facilities, including the 4,000-seater main bowl, a 3,000-seater banquet hall, exhibition halls, cinemas and VIP lounges.

It also include actors’ changing rooms, an industrial kitchen, over 300 toilet cubicles, a clinic, fire station, lobbies, and extensive roof repairs.

External works included refurbishment of the three entrance gatehouses, construction of four themed landscapes, a 250-capacity car park block, the ring road, and installation of street lighting and CCTV cameras.

The facility is also complemented by the National Theatre Blue Line train station.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Arts Theatre was originally constructed by the military regime of Gen. Yakubu Gowon and completed in 1976 under the Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

Its completion coincided with Nigeria’s hosting of the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC ’77) in January 1977.

Since its inception in 2018, the IATF has rotated among Africa’s major economies. Egypt hosted the inaugural edition in Cairo, followed by South Africa in Durban in 2021.

Cairo hosted again in 2023, while Algiers staged the fourth edition in 2025.

Nigeria will become the fourth country, and the first in West Africa, to host the fair, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s trade and investment ambitions. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Expert seeks stakeholder support to curb train derailments

Expert seeks stakeholder support to curb train derailments

By Vivian Emoni

Prof. Umar Katsayal, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, Katsina State, has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to address train derailments and other challenges in Nigeria’s railway system.

Katsayal made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said such collaboration would enhance the sector and significantly contribute to economic growth across the country.

According to him, train derailments can be tackled through regular maintenance of tracks, trains, and related equipment.

He emphasised the need for strict safety procedures and the provision of well-trained operators and maintenance staff.

“Government cannot do the work alone.

“Various stakeholders in the transportation sector must support the government in addressing train derailments and other systemic issues,” Katsayal said.

He noted that collaboration with both local and international partners was crucial for implementing sustainable measures in the railway sector.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the benefits of rail transportation, noting that an efficient railway system provided a fast, reliable, and cost-effective mode of transport for both passengers and freight.

He pointed out that one of the key objectives of the 2nd Abuja International Railway Conference and Exhibition was to bring together stakeholders to share ideas and knowledge that would advance the railway system.

Strengthening the rail sector, he said, would promote economic development by facilitating trade, commerce, tourism, and job creation in various areas such as operations, maintenance, and construction.

“Railways are also relatively environmentally friendly, producing lower greenhouse gas emissions per ton of freight or per passenger compared to road transport,” Katsayal said.

He called on all stakeholders, including federal and state governments, international experts, and Nigerians at large, to support and strengthen the railway system for the nation’s benefit.

On project implementation, Katsayal urged the government to ensure proper execution of infrastructure projects in the sector.

He stressed the importance of feasibility studies, route planning, and careful design.

He added that infrastructure must be consistently monitored by technical experts to ensure proper maintenance and prevent derailments or technical issues.

“Effective implementation requires collaboration among government agencies, private sector entities, and other relevant stakeholders,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

He noted that participants would gain practical insights to overcome disruption fears and embrace innovation with confidence.

“Information is power. Knowledge is power. Attendees will leave better equipped to handle innovations and disruptions,” he said.

He explained that the conference would attract legal experts, regulators, company secretaries, and academics from within and outside Nigeria.

The event will be chaired by Mr Udo Udoma, Board Chairman of Seplat Energy, and Mr Emmanuel Ikazoboh, Chairman of Dangote Cement.

Olawale described the conference as an “intellectual harvest” expected to generate actionable recommendations for both public and private sectors.

He said communiques from the gathering would be published and shared with government agencies to guide policy formulation.

He added that the conference would feature awards, including Chartered Secretary of the Year, Corporate Governance Excellence Award, and Media Award.

Olawale assured that ICSAN remained committed to strengthening professionals’ confidence and competence in navigating disruptive technologies.

Beyond the annual event, he said ICSAN is dedicated to capacity building, advocacy, and awareness creation across various economic sectors.

He stressed that professional bodies must objectively critique government policies while supporting positive reforms.

“We want people to become more knowledgeable, confident, and open to innovation,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
