Airline operators commend Tinubu for suspending 4% import levy

Airline operators commend Tinubu for suspending 4% import levy

By Itohan Abara-Laserian

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has commended President Bola Tinubu for suspending the four per cent Free on Board (FoB) levy on imports.

AON also praised the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, for upholding the vision of the President.

The commendations are contained in a statement signed by the AON President, Dr Abdulmunaf Sarina, and Vice President, Dr Allen Onyema, on Tuesday in Lagos.

According to the body, the suspension demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment, protecting critical sectors, and promoting sustainable economic growth.

The operators noted that implementing the levy would have severely affected Nigerian airlines, increasing operating costs and further straining an industry already grappling with multiple challenges.

Specifically, the operators lauded Edun for exemplary leadership as a listening minister, showing patriotism and responsiveness by addressing stakeholders’ concerns.

They added that Edun’s decision reflected strong commitment to carrying out the President’s mandate with diligence, sensitivity, and fairness across economic sectors.

“This bold and thoughtful intervention will safeguard aviation, protect jobs, reduce inflationary pressures, and keep Nigeria competitive in the global business environment,” the statement read in part.

AON reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with government to strengthen aviation and contribute to Tinubu’s vision for economic growth and national development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Monday, Sept. 15, the presidency suspended the four per cent FoB levy introduced earlier this year. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Tangele East union unveils cooperative society in Abuja

Tangele East union unveils cooperative society in Abuja

By Perpetua Onuegbu

The Tangele East Progressive Union (TEPU) of Gombe State has launched the TEPU Abuja Cooperative Society Limited to promote collective prosperity, empowerment and community development.

Speaking at the event in Abuja, Mr Edward Lametek, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said cooperative societies stimulate local markets and foster social cohesion.

Lametek, who spoke on the theme “Empowering Members and Enhancing Our Community,” said the cooperative would address the everyday struggles of ordinary people who often lack access to affordable credit.

“The cooperative is our organised response to today’s challenges, built on a solid foundation of trust, shared responsibility and collective action.

“This is more than a ceremony; it is the beginning of a journey towards shared progress and resilience,” he said.

Citing 2019 statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Lametek noted that Nigeria had no fewer than 240,000 cooperatives, with the South-West accounting for 53 per cent, while the North-East trailed with only three per cent.

He said the TEPU Abuja Cooperative was, therefore, a timely response to bridging that gap, adding that it would foster financial inclusion, collective bargaining power, skills development and knowledge sharing.

He said it would also stimulate local economic growth, reduce poverty, support community projects and curb rural-urban migration by creating opportunities at home.

Dr Jarida Doji, Chairman of TEPU Abuja Branch, said the cooperative reinforced one of the vital building blocks of national cohesion.

“When a community is financially empowered, socially responsible and united in vision, it becomes an anchor of stability for the nation.

“Through financial inclusion, youth empowerment and collective ownership, this cooperative becomes a platform for peace, security and sustainable progress,” Doji said.

He expressed optimism that the cooperative, which started with a seed fund of N20 million in 2024, would expand its capital base to N150 million and attain the status of a microfinance bank in the coming years.

Also speaking, the Chief Unveiler, Sen. Anthony Yaro (Gombe South), said the cooperative was designed to empower rural citizens and create wealth at the grassroots.

“It’s a programme that will touch the grassroots, the poor and the middleclass, so they can upgrade from the level they are now to a better position,” Yaro said.

Chairman of the event, Dr Jerry Danmara, Managing Director of Mesotho Group Limited, said the cooperative would help rural dwellers achieve food security, access healthcare and fund their children’s education.

He encouraged members to save with the cooperative to enable them access credit in times of need and urged the society to venture into other businesses to ensure sustainability. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

ICMPD, NAPTIP partner against human trafficking in Delta, Edo

ICMPD, NAPTIP partner against human trafficking in Delta, Edo

By Usman Aliyu

The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) on Tuesday commenced a four-day capacity-building workshop for stakeholders to effectively fight human trafficking in Edo and Delta.

The workshop, in partnership with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), brought together investigators, prosecutors, and enforcement officers from the two states.

The workshop, held in Benin, is the first in a four-location training series targeting eight states across Nigeria, with support from the Government of the Netherlands.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the theme of the workshop is “Building an Environment Free of Human Trafficking and Violence Against Persons in Nigeria.”

The Project Manager of ICMPD, West Africa Office, Mr Matthias Esene, said that the initiative was designed to strengthen the skills of justice actors and build bridges between federal and state agencies.

Esene said that trafficking and violence were realities in local communities.

“Together, we are building and shaping a community of practice where knowledge sharing and collaboration become standard practices in the fight against human trafficking and violence against persons,” he said.

“Victims are recruited from motor parks, lured on social media, exploited in brothels, or trafficked across our borders.

“It is, therefore, at the local level that our collaborative structures must be most active and responsive,” he said.

The ICMPD official said that the project would invest heavily in technology to tackle emerging trends in human trafficking and violence against persons globally.

“Technology and systems are important, but it is people who drive transformation. This is why investing in training, motivation and collaboration is key,” he said.

Esene said that the workshop, with more than 40 participants drawn from law enforcement, civil defence, police, ministries of justice, and women’s affairs, sought to establish a community of practice that would outlive the project’s three-year lifespan.

The Director-General of NAPTIP, Hajia Binta Bello, said that Nigeria was grappling with both cross-border and internal trafficking.

Bello, represented by Dr Ebele Ulasi, NAPTIP Director of Training and Manpower Development, said that Edo had been a particular point of concern.

“Trafficking is an evolving crime, and in this era of globalisation, traffickers keep devising new methods.

“That is why continuous training, synergy, and retraining remain central.

“NAPTIP alone cannot fight human trafficking. The need for synergy cannot be overemphasised.

“Fighting these two crimes is an all-hands-on-deck approach,” she said.

Mrs Roseline Abare, NAPTIP’s focal person for the project, outlined specific objectives of the programme, which include strengthening criminal justice responses through digital tools, enhancing coordination, and operationalising victim support systems.

Abare said the agency recently established NAPTIP’s Cybercrime Response Team (CRT) and a Joint Case Team for cybercrime investigations. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Techparley Africa launches ‘DRIVE100’ to spotlight startups

Techparley Africa launches ‘DRIVE100’ to spotlight startups

By Ibironke Ariyo

Techparley Africa, a media and digital literacy firm, has launched DRIVE100, a media accelerator programme designed to spotlight 100 promising African tech startups with free, high-impact publicity.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Tuesday by the product manager, Ms Aderonke Ogunleti.

Ogunleti said the initiative aimed to give visibility to innovative startups whose solutions remain unnoticed despite the increasing investment in Africa’s growing technology ecosystem.

She noted that African startups raised 1.42 billion dollars across 243 deals in the first half of 2025, according to data published by TechCabal.

“Many ventures still struggle to attract investors, partners and customers due to limited visibility. DRIVE100 seeks to bridge this gap by connecting startups with stakeholders,” she said.

Ogunleti stressed that the programme was designed to help startups scale through strategic storytelling.

“Through DRIVE100, we want to do more than report. Our ambition is to push these stories before investors, partners and customers who can accelerate growth,” she added.

She explained that the initiative would feature curated interviews and editorial profiles of selected startups, highlighting their journeys, challenges, solutions and impact across different markets.

According to her, DRIVE100 is open to tech-enabled startups across Africa, regardless of size or sector. Applications are open until Oct. 15, 2025.

Ogunleti disclosed that a panel of experts will carefully review submissions to identify the most innovative and impactful ventures.

“The programme is free. We believe that powerful storytelling and meaningful visibility should never be limited by budget. We encourage all eligible startups to apply,” she said.

She added that the project was also aimed at inspiring a new generation of entrepreneurs, investors and innovators, while supporting Africa’s economic development.

Interested applicants are urged to visit www.techparley.com/drive100 or email editor@techparley.com for guidelines and eligibility criteria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Techparley Africa promotes innovation and digital literacy by showcasing the stories of African startups and entrepreneurs.

Group hails Nigeria’s leading role in promoting safer, conflict-free Africa

Group hails Nigeria’s leading role in promoting safer, conflict-free Africa

By Diana Omueza

International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA), a coalition on disarmament, has hailed Nigeria for leading Africa in promoting a safer, conflict-free continent in line with the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

Dr Mimidoo Achakpa, the Coordinator of IANSA Women Network in Nigeria (IANSAWNN), said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

NAN reports that the Convention on Cluster Munitions, an international treaty, bans the use, development, production, stockpiling and transfer of cluster munitions considering its disproportionate, long-lasting harm to civilians.

Adopted in 2008 and entered into force in 2010, the treaty requires states parties to destroy existing stockpiles, clear contaminated areas, and provide assistance to victims.

Achakpa said that Nigeria, as a committed state party, had distinguished itself as the champion of the convention in Africa through several advocacy and humanitarian acts.

According to her, Nigeria has advocated for universalisation of the convention across Africa, mobilising ECOWAS and African Union platforms to encourage state parties to join.

“Nigeria pushed for stronger victim assistance commitments, ensuring that survivor needs remain central in humanitarian disarmament debates.

“The country has contributed to clearance and mine action work on the continent, reinforcing Africa’s collective efforts to eliminate the threat of cluster munitions.

“Nigeria serves as a bridge-builder in multilateral fora, voicing the concerns of conflict-affected communities and emphasizing Africa’s stake in upholding humanitarian norms,” she said.

Achakpa said that Nigeria’s leadership at the 2025 meeting of states, scheduled to take place in September in Geneva, would be crucial.

She said that Nigeria’s presence would shape discussions on Lithuania’s withdrawal, reinforcing the treaty’s credibility, and charting the path toward a cluster munition–free world.

NAN reports that Lithuania’s unprecedented withdrawal in March marks the first time a state left a humanitarian disarmament convention.

Achakpa said that Nigeria’s leadership would buttress the role of grassroots and gender-inclusive approaches which strengthens the implementation of treaties by addressing victims’ needs and ensuring that policies were responsive.

She added that Nigeria’s combined state leadership and civil society activism represented a valuable model in Africa for how the convention’s norms could be upheld.

This, she said, was not only through ratification, but through domestic implementation, advocacy, and support.

Achakpa raised the alarm that troubling setbacks were threatening to weaken the international norm established by the convention which called for immediate attention.

“In 2024, state parties destroyed more cluster munition remnants than in any of the preceding five years, releasing over 100 kilometre squares of land for safe civilian use.

“To date, nearly 1.5 million cluster munitions containing 179 million submunitions have been destroyed, and no state party has ever used, acquired, or transferred these weapons since joining the treaty.

“Ongoing use by state parties, particularly Russia and Ukraine, as well as Myanmar and previously Syria, has resulted in devastating civilian harm, with more than 1,200 casualties in Ukraine since Feb. 2022,” she said.

Achakpa added that U.S. transfers of cluster munitions to Ukraine, including through the territory of state party Germany, have further challenged the treaty’s credibility.

She said that in spite of the numerous challenges, the global stigma surrounding cluster munitions continued to grow, which was worrisome.

Achakpa said that there was critical need for stronger victim-assistance, noting persistent gaps in access to medical care, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support, particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas.

The IANSA Coordinator called for a renewed global commitment on accelerating universalisation, strengthening survivor support and resisting any erosion of the convention’s core humanitarian achievements.

She said that civil society actors must not relent in bridging gaps between treaty obligations and on-the-ground realities.

This, she said, was especially in conflict or post-conflict settings where clearance, victim assistance, legal reforms, and awareness raising were needed.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Group passes vote of confidence in women affairs leaders

Group passes vote of confidence in women affairs leaders

By Ibironke Ariyo

The Committee of Youth on Mobilisation and Sensitisation (CYMS) has passed a vote of confidence in the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and the Permanent Secretary, Dr Maryam Kensinro.

The Director General of CYMS, Chief Obinna Nwaka, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja at a media briefing.

Nwaka said the decision followed the protest held on Sept. 10 by staff of the ministry over welfare and working conditions.

He noted that while protests were part of democratic expressions, issues within institutions should be addressed through dialogue, mutual respect and patience.

He described the ministry as a vital engine in advancing the rights, empowerment and welfare of women, children and vulnerable groups in Nigeria.

Nwaka said the vote of confidence was anchored on the track record of the minister and permanent secretary, stressing that both leaders have demonstrated great service and dedication to duty.

He commended the minister for her exceptional leadership in redefining policies and programmes for women empowerment; tackling gender-based violence; and upholding Nigeria’s commitments to international conventions on women and children.

The CYMS D-G also praised Kensinro for demonstrating diligence, professionalism and concern for the welfare of staff, in spite of challenges posed by reforms and limited resources.

“Together, both leaders have brought a renewed sense of purpose to the ministry and are charting a course that aligns with the vision of President Bola Tinubu’s administration under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

Nwaka, however, acknowledged the concerns raised by staff during the protest, describing them as genuine and valid.

He urged workers to embrace peace, dialogue and trust in the leadership of the minister and the permanent secretary.

“Protests may amplify voices, but dialogue builds lasting solutions.
“It is through unity and cooperation between management and staff that progress can be accelerated,” he added.

The CYMS boss appealed to workers to avoid actions that may distract from the ministry’s core mandate or tarnish its image.

“CYMS stands firmly with the leadership of the ministry and is confident that welfare issues would be addressed in due time.

“We urge staff to take pride in being part of a ministry that represents the voice of millions of women and children across the country, ” he said.

Nwaka prayed for God’s blessings on Nigeria and restated CYMS’ national commitment to strengthening government-people relations through engagement, enlightenment and constructive dialogue. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Women’s group hails DEPOWA scholarship scheme for children of fallen heroes

Women’s group hails DEPOWA scholarship scheme for children of fallen heroes

By Sumaila Ogbaje

A women’s group, Mothers Peace and Development Forum (MPDF), has commended the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA) for providing full scholarships to children of fallen heroes.

Convener of MPDF, Hajiya Bilikisu Aminu, gave the commendation while briefing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja.

Aminu described the initiative as a step in the right direction, noting that the gesture was already boosting the morale of troops engaged in the ongoing fight against insecurity.

She said the President of DEPOWA, Mrs Oghogho Musa, had disclosed that the scholarship programme would begin with the inauguration of the DEPOWA Future Leaders Academy in September 2026.

Aminu quoted the DEPOWA President as saying the scheme would benefit children of fallen heroes and promote national cohesion by admitting children from surrounding communities.

According to the MPDF convener, the wives and children of fallen heroes often fear for their future, but the scholarship initiative has given them hope for a brighter tomorrow.

She also commended the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, for supporting the numerous initiatives of DEPOWA since assuming office in 2023.

Aminu urged troops to reciprocate the gesture by ensuring that the enemies of the country are decisively dealt with.

“We congratulate troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and our Police for this ground-breaking initiative by DEPOWA.

“It is an assurance that you have a solid backing as you pursue and deal with those who say we will have no peace in our country,” she said.

Aminu said that inclusion of children from outside the military community would foster civil-military relations and enhance intelligence gathering.

On her part, the Secretary of MPDF, Mrs Ifeoma Igwe, said the DEPWOA president had introduced numerous welfare initiatives since assuming office, bringing succour to families of fallen heroes and those still in service.

According to her, the achievements will not have been possible without the support of the CDS.

“This goes to show that our amiable Chief of Defence Staff is determined to use not only kinetic, but also non-kinetic means to restore peace in our country,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
