TEXEM: Transforming Leadership for Sustainable Value Creation

TEXEM: Transforming Leadership for Sustainable Value Creation

TEXEM, UK’s recently concluded two-day capacity development programme, themed “Strategic Foresight: Developing Winning Strategies for Unparalleled Value,” delivered by Dr. Alim Abubakre, Founder of TEXEM, and Dr. T.B. (Mac) McClelland, Jr., Chair of Luxury International and former US Marine Leader, represents a watershed moment for leadership development in Nigeria.

In a world defined by volatility, technological disruption, and shifting stakeholder expectations, the programme transcended traditional learning models. It immersed executives in the art of strategic foresight, the science of data-driven decision-making, the craft of stakeholder alignment, and the discipline of agile leadership execution.

Participants embarked on a transformational journey, beginning with understanding strategic foresight. They explored how forward-thinking organisations, unlike reactive institutions, scan the horizon for weak signals, anticipate emerging risks, and position themselves to lead rather than follow. Through vivid examples, such as Kodak’s downfall due to missed innovation opportunities versus Amazon’s relentless reinvention, leaders recognised the cost of complacency and the dividends of anticipatory leadership.

The session on leadership agility in uncertain times revealed that agility is not merely about moving fast but about moving strategically with purpose. Participants discovered that enduring organisations are those that empower decentralized decision-making, iterate fast, and maintain a clear yet flexible strategic vision. Drawing lessons from Apple’s crisis-era leadership and SpaceX’s pioneering resilience, the executives sharpened their ability to pivot intelligently in dynamic contexts.

A crucial part of the programme focused on data-driven decision-making. Leaders were challenged to rethink their relationship with data, not as an overwhelming sea of information, but as a powerful compass that guides strategic navigation. Case studies, including Netflix’s data-driven content creation model, showcased how data analytics, when deployed effectively, can sharpen strategic focus and fuel sustainable innovation.

Beyond anticipating future threats and leveraging data, participants immersed themselves in the often-overlooked art of winning stakeholder support. Through structured stakeholder mapping exercises and reflections on Airbnb’s crisis management strategy, executives internalized that successful leadership is not simply about top-down directives, but about orchestrating diverse interests into coherent action toward common goals.

Further enriching the leadership arsenal, the facilitators delved into the discipline of strategy execution and change management. The difference between strategy as theory and strategy as lived reality was explored through powerful narratives such as Microsoft’s cultural transformation under Satya Nadella. Leaders learned actionable frameworks for building internal coalitions, creating accountability loops, and transforming bold strategic visions into tangible, measurable outcomes despite organisational resistance.

The programme culminated with a focus on strategic resilience and digital transformation. Participants were exposed to real-world examples such as Alibaba’s pivot during the SARS crisis and Tesla’s relentless embedding of innovation into organisational DNA. It became clear that resilience is not about enduring one crisis; it is about systematically building adaptive muscles for an age where disruption is the new normal. True digital transformation, it was emphasised, goes beyond adopting new technologies — it demands a fundamental shift in organisational culture, mindsets, and behaviours.

This intensive programme delivered not just knowledge but equipped leaders with actionable frameworks, battle-tested tools, and world-class case studies that they can immediately deploy in their organisations.

For the leaders, the programme was profoundly beneficial. They now possess the strategic agility to pre-empt threats, the influence strategies to rally stakeholders behind ambitious visions, and the data literacy to make precise, timely, and impactful decisions. Their ability to move beyond survival tactics towards shaping the future of their industries was markedly enhanced.

For their organisations, the gains are substantial. By embedding foresight, agility, stakeholder mastery, data intelligence, and resilient cultures, organisations represented at the programme are now positioned to achieve stronger competitive positioning, reduce the risk of strategic failure, foster continuous innovation, and achieve greater stakeholder trust — all essential ingredients for enduring growth.

For Nigeria as a whole, the ripple effects are transformative. Building a critical mass of executives equipped with foresight, agility, and resilience enhances national economic competitiveness, boosts investor confidence, strengthens governance structures, and catalyses innovation ecosystems critical for the country’s sustainable development.

This programme reinforced TEXEM’s enduring commitment to inspiring strategic leadership, nurturing transformative action, and catalysing positive change. As participants return to their organisations, they do not merely carry certificates — they carry the seeds of profound, systemic impact.

In an era where those who fail to anticipate the future are doomed to be disrupted by it, TEXEM, UK’s “Strategic Foresight” programme did not just prepare leaders to survive disruption — it prepared them to shape the future.

Gov. Mutfwang: Trudging on amidst recurrent distractions

Gov. Mutfwang: Trudging on amidst recurrent distractions

By Polycarp Auta, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

In the run up to the 2023 general elections, political analysts identified Mr Caleb Mutfwang, a contestant to the Plateau governorship seat, as one candidate that was sure of victory.

They hinged such optimism on the affection the lawyer enjoyed among Plateau residents long before he picked the ticket of his political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Such popularity was amply demonstrated when he returned from Abuja after collecting his party’s flag.

The crowd that came to welcome him at the Heipang Airport was so massive that his opponents feared an imminent defeat.

And, true to the fears, Mutfwang easily won the election and was sworn in on May 29, 2023.

The battle for the seat was to continue at the courts with the Supreme Court finally declaring him winner in January 2024.

Mutfwang quickly settled into governance, moving with the speed of a leader ready to fulfil his contract with the people.

The first challenge was the high debt profile and the decay in the state’s civil service.

Civil servants were already on strike as they were owed several months’ salaries. The outstanding salaries and pension arrears were paid and the workers returned to work.

Available records also show that the government has also paid gratuities and death benefits dating back to 1986.

The minimum monthly pension has also been increased from N5,000 to N20,000, with the payment now more regular.

Attention has also been paid to transportation.

According to Mutfwang, the goal is to “invigorate the Plateau economy and draw investors to its vast potential”.

In this respect, Jos intra-city bus service has been launched, easing movement across the capital.

In the first phase launched on May 7, 2024, 15 buses were inaugurated with more coming on board as the demand kept rising while more routes were getting covered.

To boost inter-state transport services, 15 buses have been added to the Plateau Express Ltd, while 20 Toyota Sienna vehicles have been acquired to ply the Jos-Abuja route.

The governor has also ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Valuejets Airline for thrice-weekly flights to Jos.

Government has also brokered a deal with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to rejuvenate the dormant rail transport and mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the populace.

The envisaged train service is anticipated to invigorate economic activities, attract investments, bolster commerce, enhance tourism and create direct and indirect jobs.

The health sector is also being revitalized with the Plateau State Drugs and Medical Commodities Agency (PS-DMCMA), equipped to procure, store and distribute drugs and medical supplies in state-run medical outfits.

The goal, Mutfwang says, is to ensure that essential medications are available, accessible, and affordable.

Until recently, Plateau was celebrated as one of Nigeria’s cleanest states, making it a choice destination for tourists.

The Mutfwang administration found a changed situation with Jos grappling with heaps of refuse and powerful stenches oozing from all angles.

To tackle the menace, the government has declared a state of emergency on the environment with refuse disposal trucks evacuating waste in Jos/Bukuru metropolis and beyond.

The reintroduction of the monthly sanitation programme, supervised by the Governor, has led to significant improvements and the streets are noticeably cleaner.

The monthly stipend of street cleaners in Jos has also been reviewed from N8,000 to N15, 000 to encourage them to put in their best.

To improve the road network across the state, the government has initiated significant projects within the Jos/Bukuru Metropolis and across the 17 Local Governments.

The administration has rehabilitated a network of roads constructed more than 40 years ago and had deteriorated into hazardous conditions.

It has also completed the flyover bridge linking NASCO and Abattoir communities. This project is significant as it eases traffic within the capital city.

The construction of a 6.5km road at Angwan Rogo, with a bridge to Hawan Idi/Ali Kazaure, and a 12.1km road covering Amma Street to Apata, is another critical project.

Other critical road projects executed are the Sabon Barki-Building road, the Tudun Wada-Mado-Jabong road, among many others across the state, turning Plateau into a construction site.

In the agricultural sector,
the state has distributed N3.6 billion worth of fertilizer to bolster dry-season farming efforts.

The Plateau Agricultural Development Programme (PADP), has also launched coconut and oil palm plantations to further diversify and strengthen the state’s agro-forestry sector, while 500 farmers specializing in maize, rice and wheat value chains, have been given assorted seeds to boost yields.

PADP has also procured 200 tractors, while 300 tractors belonging to ASTC were revamped and put to use.

Piggery farmers in Jos South and Langtang North LGAs, who were hit by the 2022 floods, have been assisted to restart.

Mutfwang has carried women and children along in his vision, beginning with the nomination of Mrs Josephine Piyo as Deputy Governor.

So far, the women affairs ministry has trained 102 widows on various skills at the Mangu Centre and equipped them with starter packs to start their businesses.

In the area of education, the Governor has reduced tuition fees by 50% for Plateau natives enrolled in state-owned tertiary institutions.

Additionally, there has been a 300% increase in scholarship awards for Plateau students pursuing higher education across Nigeria.

Government has also addressed the issue of unpaid salaries for ad hoc staff, some of whom had been on that status for several years.

Worried by the destructive malarial menace, the State Malaria Elimination Programme (SMEP), has secured 2,998,650 Insecticide Treated Nets (ITNs) for distribution across households.

The Mutfwang leadership has also boosted the capacity of the Plateau Hospital, Jos, with 22 medical consultants across various specialities, while its long-abandoned laboratory complex had been completed and equipment worth N2 billion fitted into it.

In the area of primary education, the government has renovated and constructed 148 classrooms and dug boreholes in schools to make the learning environment conducive.

A lot has also been sunk into water supply with N1.3 billion spent to procure assorted Water Treatment Chemicals while N700 million went into settling liabilities incurred on similar items by previous administrations.

INCLUSIVE GOVERNANCE

In pursuing his dream of a greater Plateau, Mutfwang has shown no discrimination either on the basis of religion, tribe or political leanings.

Two commissioners – Bashir Lawandi in water resources and energy, and Mohammed Nyalum of commerce – for instance, are Muslims.

He also has many Special Advisers, Special Assistants and top aides that are Muslims and is on record as sponsoring the highest number of Muslims to Hajj in 2023.

Areas with Muslims as residents have also enjoyed many development projects, a privilege that has attracted speedy growth to the areas.

SECURITY CONCERNS

But, as Mutfwang speedily moves to build a prosperous Plateau, a recurrent distraction – insecurity – is slowing down the steam and blurring his focus.

Indeed, the challenge of insecurity has, for long, been the lot of Plateau residents.

When Mutfwang came in, he visited camps where Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are kept in Riyom, Mangu and Bokkos Local Government Areas, to assess the situation.

Few weeks before he was sworn in, his own Mangu Local Government Area came under severe attack on May 15, 2023.

The attacks claimed a lot of lives and appeared to give him a signal that evil was lurking.

The violence subsided in the later part of 2023, 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, but resumed in the last few weeks with Bokkos, Bassa, Mangu, Barkin-Ladi and Riyom as the targets.

A distraught Mutfwang has since been running from pillar to post to secure his people.

He has made it a duty to visit every hit community to commiserate with victims and caution against reprisal attacks.

He has severally met with President Bola Tinubu, Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, and other top security officials to work out ways to tackle the menace.

At first, it appeared that the efforts had yielded fruits with both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies adopted to restore peace, but the resurgence of hostilities has shown that more needs to be done.

To tackle the violence, the Governor has reactivated the hitherto dormant state-owned security outfit —Operation Rainbow.

The outfit is expected to mobilise 600 personnel, chosen from across the local governments, to secure the state.

Its personnel shall be expected to use the knowledge of their communities to provide effective security, focusing on intelligence gathering and the relay of early warning signals.

The administration has also established the State Security and Information Centre where citizens can report security concerns via a toll-free line. This centre enables the government to receive timely information on pressing security issues in rural communities.

But, as the governor battles to secure the state, analysts fear that the situation would worsen if all stakeholders are not united to end the crisis.

They particularly decried a situation where politicians seek to make political capital out of the bloodshed and feared that desperate politicians could even stock the fire of violence to put the governor on the defence.

Worried by the recurring attacks on the rural communities, President Tinubu has directed security agencies to fully mobilise all resources to end the bloodshed.

He has also promised to fully support measures that could restore normalcy.

Former Plateau governor Jonah Jang has also decried the worsening insecurity in Plateau, urging everyone to support the Governor to bring peace.

Jang said that resolving the crises and restoring peace to the Plateau was not a matter the governor could handle alone.

“The attacks in Plateau are not mere communal disputes; they are perpetrated by a group with a specific agenda

“It is crucial for the President to understand the true nature of these attacks in order to address them effectively,” Jang said.

Jang advised Tinubu to convene an expanded meeting with community leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the situation in Plateau.

He said that such a meeting would provide a platform for stakeholders to share their insights and experiences, enabling the President to develop a more informed approach to tackling the problem.

Jang urged the people of Plateau to remain strong and resist any attempt to destroy their state.

He urged the people to love everyone around them, but admonished them to “always remain alert so as to protect the state from invaders”.

Retired Admiral Bitrus Atukum, former Plateau Military Administrator, has spoken in the same vein and urged President Tinubu to give security agencies “specific instructions” to flush out miscreants invading Plateau rural communities.

Atukum, who ruled Plateau from 1984 to 1985, said that the attacks were constituting a “huge economic sabotage”.

“We are now in the farming season; if the attacks continue, farmers won’t go to the farm. That will lead to hunger and poverty,” he fumed.

On his part, Mutfwang has consistently rehashed what his predecessors had always said – that the violence is targeted at land grabbing – vowing, however, that no Plateau land shall be ceded to anyone.

While lamenting that many communities had been seized by the invaders, the Governor has promised to ensure that all displaced people return to their ancestral lands.

Analysts believe that the governor’s current consultations will bring peace to the state and ward off recurrent distractions obstructing his focus toward building a greater Plateau.(NANFeatures)

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has stated that WhatsApp’s threat to exit Nigeria following a recent regulatory order will not absolve the company from any legal consequences.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Ondaje Ijagwu, stressed that Meta and its subsidiaries must comply with Nigerian laws.

Ijagwu described the threat as a calculated move aimed at inducing negative public reaction and potentially pressuring the FCCPC to reconsider its decision.

He said the recent affirmation of FCCPC’s final order by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal required Meta Parties to stop exploiting Nigerian consumers, change their practices to meet Nigerian standards consistent with international best practices.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Ijagwu said the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal had awarded 220 million dollars against Meta Platforms Incorporated and WhatsApp LLC as an administrative penalty for the violations.

NAN recalls that the tribunal further awarded 35,000 dollars to the FCCPC as cost of investigation.

”The FCCPC investigated Meta Platforms and WhatsApp (jointly referred to as “Meta Parties”) for allegedly violating the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) and the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR).

”The Commission found that Meta Parties engaged in multiple and repeated infringements of the FCCPA (2018) and the NDPR.

”These infringements include denying Nigerians the right to control their personal data, transferring and sharing Nigerian user data without authorisation.

”Others are discriminating against Nigerian users compared to users in other jurisdictions and abusing their dominant market position by forcing unfair privacy policies,” he said.

Ijagwu said that Meta had been fined for similar breaches in Texas (1.5 billion dollars ) and only recently was asked to pay 1.3 billion dollars for violating European Union (E.U.) Data Privacy Rules.

He said that Meta had faced penalties in India, South Korea, France and Australia for similar breaches.

According to him, Meta never resorted to the blackmail of threatening to exit those countries rather, they obeyed.

Ijagwu said that FCCPC remained committed in its pursuit of consumer protection and data privacy toward ensuring a fairer digital market in the country. (NAN)

The River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) have pledged to boost the Federal Government’s food security efforts by forming stronger partnerships and adopting modern agricultural technologies.

Alhaji Abubakar Malam, who spoke on behalf of the RBDA Boards and Management teams at the close of a two-day retreat in Abuja on Saturday, acknowledged the numerous challenges facing the authorities.

He noted the persistent issues of ageing infrastructure, extreme weather conditions, and insecurity that continue to hinder optimal productivity across their zones.

Malam, who is also the Managing Director of the Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority, noted the dilapidated state of facilities and outdated equipment that limit the full potential of the river basin authorities.

“Our facilities are obsolete, and climate change is exacerbating the situation with flooding, erosion, and erratic weather patterns.

“Yet, we remain undeterred. We are committed to innovating, adopting modern irrigation technologies, and shifting the narrative of the River Basins to a more sustainable and productive future”.

Malam emphasised that these objectives cannot be achieved in isolation and stressed the importance of collaboration.

He stated, “We are committed to building strong partnerships, particularly with state governments, to ensure that local actions are aligned with national priorities.

“Collaboration is key to enhancing extension services, addressing community needs, and improving project outcomes”.

The Managing Directors also assured stakeholders that the river basin authorities will continue to maintain open-door policies under the federal government’s partial commercialisation framework, which aims to encourage private sector investment.

This framework is seen as an essential step in reviving Nigeria’s agricultural sector by providing opportunities for agribusiness development, rural economy revitalisation, and sustainable irrigation practices.

“In alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and 13 (Climate Action), the RBDAs are focusing on expanding irrigated farmlands, equipping farmers with modern agricultural techniques.

“Others are enhancing value chains to reduce food waste, boost production, and improve market access.

“These efforts are designed to increase food availability and contribute to the goal of achieving food security for the nation by 2027,” he added.

The Joint Appointees Forum further called on development partners, private sector players, and other stakeholders to seize the emerging opportunities in Nigeria’s agriculture sector.

The forum highlighted the potential for collaboration in revitalising rural economies through sustainable irrigation and agribusiness development, which will ultimately support the government’s food security agenda.

The retreat, which brought together the leadership of all twelve RBDAs, concluded with a renewed commitment to achieving tangible, measurable results. (NAN)

FG developing framework on responsible use of AI – Idris

By Collins Yakubu-Hammer

The Federal Government says it is developing a national policy framework on responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media space.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris. disclosed this on Saturday while commemorating the World Press Freedom Day.

Idris explained that the framework would ensure that innovation does not come at the cost of ethics, press freedom and national security.

Speaking on the theme of the day, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” the minister underscored the critical role of the media in shaping informed societies.

“As we commemorate this day, let us all; government, media and civil society, work together to protect freedom of expression while embracing technology that advances, rather than diminishes the values we hold dearly.

“Let me reaffirm that President Bola Tinubu’s Administration remains deeply committed to upholding press freedom as a cornerstone of our democracy.

“A free and responsible media is the life blood of any democratic society; it gives citizens the power to express themselves freely and hold leaders accountable,” he said.

The minister added, “In this new era, our resolve must be matched with action, through policies that promote media innovation while protecting journalists from the misuse of technology.

“As part of this commitment, the Federal Government is currently developing a national policy framework on the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in the media space.

“This framework will ensure that innovation does not come at the cost of ethics, press freedom, or national security”.

The minister expressed concern that, at a time when AI powered misinformation, deepfakes, and disinformation, campaigns are being used as weapon to exploit divide and sow discord.

He stressed that the role of the media, as a gatekeeper of truth, had become more critical.

Idris noted that the media must take a principled stand to protect the information ecosystem from being polluted by falsehoods and manipulated content.

“Media organisations must be vigilant and not allow their platforms, whether traditional or digital to be hijacked by subversive elements, terrorists, anti-state actors, or ultra nationalist groups, who seek to undermine our collective peace and the sovereignty of our nation.

“Granting such elements access to the public sphere without scrutiny, will not only endanger national security, but also erodes public trust in the media,” Idris said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Rivers Angels FC of Port Harcourt on Saturday thrashed First Mahi Babes of Ebonyi 5-0 in the ongoing Federation/President Cup round 16 match played at Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

Rivers Angels Player, Chisom Nwachukwu, showed her strength when she was introduced into the game after the interval with two goals to her name.

The Port Harcourt women who missed several chances early in the match, including a penalty, taken by the team Captain Polinus Ifeoma, took the lead through patience Otubo in the 37th minute.

Titilayo Aweda scored the second goal in 38th minute before Nwachukwu scored her first goal and the third goal for the team in 61st minute to make it 3-0.

Rivers Angels made it 4-0 in the 70th minute when Aminat Folorunsho put the ball beyond First Mahi goalkeeper before Nwachukwu scored her second goal and fifth goal for her team on 74th minute.

In a post interview, Rivers United Coach, Blankson Tosan hailed the players for doing well in the match but expressed worry on the team conversion of chances.

Tosan said his team would have scored lots of goals in the match but missed several chances, which would have cost them a lot against a more organised and experience team.

“We are not going to look down on our low rate of conversion of chances because we have more experienced teams to face in the Nigeria Women League Super Six,” Tosan said.

First Mahi coach, Armstrong Okon, said their match against Rivers Angels had given the team much to look into and exposed the players to a high-profile game.

“With the look of things, we came with young players and the full squad we normally use to play the championship game and we brought them to express themselves for the world to see.

“Rivers Angels are an experienced team that had been playing women top-flight league for years so, they are ahead of our players in terms of exposure and experience.” (NAN)(www.nannews.com.ng)

FG suspends bilateral education scholarships for 5 years

FG suspends bilateral education scholarships for 5 years

By Funmilayo Adeyemi

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has announced a five-year suspension of the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) programme to promote student growth, prioritise welfare, and strengthen Nigeria’s education system.

The Director of Press and Public Relations at the ministry, Mrs Boriowo Folasade, said the minister spoke after a comprehensive review of academic programmes available overseas.

The BEA programme, established through diplomatic partnerships, enabled Nigerian students to study in various countries, including China, Russia, Algeria, Hungary, Morocco, Egypt, and Serbia.

Under the programme, students were supported with funds for tuition and living expenses.

Alausa said the decision followed careful evaluation which revealed that all courses offered abroad through the BEA scheme are now available, and in many cases better enhanced within Nigerian institutions.

“We have carefully reviewed all courses our citizens pursue abroad. Every single one is now offered here at home,” he stated.

He explained that while the suspension encourages Nigerians to study locally, it does not prevent parents from sponsoring their children to study overseas privately.

“We must be fair and equitable to every citizen. The government currently spends significantly on tickets, stipends, and other costs to send students abroad for education they can now access at home, often at better quality,” he said.

He clarified that the Federal Government will still welcome BEA partner countries that offer fully funded scholarships to Nigerians.

“Such scholarships must cover tuition, accommodation, travel, living expenses, healthcare, and a monthly stipend of no less than $500, at no cost to the Nigerian government”.

Alausa also stressed that the moratorium will not affect other government-funded scholarship schemes such as the Nigerian Scholarship Award for students in public universities and polytechnics, the Education Bursary Award for undergraduates studying Education, and the Presidential Scholarship for ex-NYSC corps members.

He further highlighted the improved Nigerian Student Loan Programme, which now provides more robust financial support to students enrolled in local higher institutions.

Alausa assured that all current BEA scholarship beneficiaries will continue to receive full government support until they complete their studies and return to Nigeria.

“We stand by the promises made to our students abroad,” he affirmed.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding local scholarship opportunities and supporting the educational aspirations of all Nigerians, ensuring that no dream is delayed or denied. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Journalists stage ‘Freedom Walk’ in Calabar

Journalists stage ‘Freedom Walk’ in Calabar

Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River Chapter, came out in large numbers on Saturday for a road walk to mark World Press Freedom Day 2025.

The road walk, tagged ‘Freedom Walk’, was led by the chapter’s chairperson, Ms Archibong Bassey, who rallied journalists in a peaceful procession across Calabar.

Participants held placards with messages like ‘The Nigerian Media Deserves Freedom, Not Fear’ and ‘No True Democracy Without a Free Press’.

Other placards read ‘Fake News Thrives When the Press is Gagged’, underscoring the call for media independence and ethical journalism.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Press Freedom Day, established by the United Nations in 1993, is observed annually on May 3.

It honours press freedom and pays tribute to journalists who lost their lives while performing their duties.

The 2025 theme is ‘Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media’.

Ms Bassey urged all tiers of government to ensure a safe and supportive environment for media professionals to operate effectively.

She emphasised the importance of an unfettered press, stating that societal ills flourish when journalists are silenced or restricted.

Bassey also highlighted the mutual responsibility between the press and society in safeguarding truth and accountability.

She called on journalists to remain focused, in spite of distractions, and uphold truth as a fundamental value of the profession.

As part of the Freedom Walk, journalists visited the Mother Elizabeth Redeemed Orphanage and the Medium Security Prison, Afokang.

They donated food and toiletries to both the orphanage and inmates as part of the day’s outreach efforts.

Mr Nsa Gil, Chief Press Secretary to Cross River Governor Bassey Otu, addressed the press during the event.
