Prof. Olalekan Akinbo of African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) says that Genome Editing (GEd) is more efficient and precise in developing new crop and animal breeds than traditional method.

He said this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

Akinbo is the Technical Lead, Genome Editing Initiative of the AUDA-NEPAD Centre of Excellence in Science, Technology and Innovation.

Gene editing is the alteration of the genetic material of a living organism.

It is done by inserting, replacing, or removing a DNA sequence with the aim of  improving some characteristic of a crop or farm animal and in some cases correcting a genetic disorder.

Akinbo said GEd technology was also efficient in targeted alterations in genetic make-up of crops and animals, increases and enhances pest resistance.

According to him, it enhances the resistance of crops and animals to pests and diseases, improves nutritional content and shortens production cycles.

He said it also bolsters resilience to abiotic stresses induced by climate change.

“This indeed demonstrates the potential of advanced agricultural technologies in supporting global food security.

“However, these new agricultural innovations, notably involving genome editing and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are subject to both international and domestic regulations.

“Member States of the African Union are encouraged to create regulatory frameworks governing these new genomic technologies and their applications,’’ he said.

Akinbo said that such regulations should ensure the safe and sustainable utilisation of innovations to enhance food security.

He said that the development, implementation, and enforcement of gene editing regulatory frameworks vary significantly across countries.

According to him, some countries have more advanced policies, legislations, and guidelines in place in that regard than others.

Akinbo said that addressing challenges posed by climate change was vital in food security efforts.

“Recent insights into molecular genetics have further accelerated crop and animal improvements, significantly amplifying production capabilities.

“Among the innovative agricultural tools emerging today, genome editing (GEd) stands out due to its ability to enhance plant and animal genetics in ways that directly improve food security,’’ he said.

The expert urged that Nigeria and other African nations should adopt sustainable agrifood systems to ensure food security and achieve sustainable development goals.

He said to achieve this, key improvements in the agricultural sector were necessary, including transitioning to more productive environments and enhancing agricultural management practices. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) and the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), has empowered 500 women from the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers.

The RHI is the flagship humanitarian platform of Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady; Mr Desmond Utomwen, Special Assistant Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, OSSAP-SDGs, said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the empowerment programme held in Port Harcourt, was part of a nationwide initiative aimed at lifting vulnerable women out of poverty.

This is in line with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goals 1 (No Poverty), 5 (Gender Equality), and 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

The 500 women received empowerment equipment such as deep-chest freezers, gas cookers with ovens, generators, and industrial grinding machines to boost their small-scale enterprises.

Tina Pepple, one of the beneficiaries, described the gesture as “a miracle that would change her life.”

She added, “with this, I can support my family. I thank our mother, the First Lady, and the SDGs Office for remembering us.”

Other beneficiaries – Blessing Dickson, Kariba Dives, Doris Jaja, Stella Ohochukwu, Gloria Kuki, and Salome Ohochukwu – also showered encomiums on the First Lady and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs.

Dr Theresa Ibas, the wife of the Sole Administrator of Rivers, who represented the First Lady at the event, noted that the initiative was aimed at planting seeds of economic revival in the lives of women.

“Today, we are equipping our women with essential tools like deep-chest freezers, gas cookers with ovens, generators, and industrial grinding machines to build successful businesses and contribute to our nation’s prosperity,” said Tinubu.

The President’s wife linked the initiative to broader national and global objectives, noting: “Women’s empowerment is central to achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 5 on gender equality and SDG 8 on decent work and economic growth.

“These items are not just tools; they are stepping stones towards financial independence and a better future for Nigerian women.”

She encouraged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity.

“Use these resources wisely to build better lives for yourselves and your families. Let what you receive today prosper in your hands as you contribute meaningfully to our nation’s progress,” she stated.

She also commended the OSSAP-SDGs for its leadership in aligning the empowerment programmes with global best practices and for providing the technical and financial frameworks for effective implementation.

Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, highlighted the programme’s broader impact on national development.

“Today’s programme is not just about distributing empowerment items; it is about unlocking potential, fostering economic independence, and creating opportunities for women to thrive,” she stated.

She reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive development through strategic partnerships and direct support to vulnerable populations.

Stakeholders laud ANI over livelihood support to 450 women in Toungo

Stakeholders laud ANI over livelihood support to 450 women in Toungo

By Gabriel Yough

A cross-section of stakeholders on Saturday commended the Africa Nature Investors (ANI) Foundation for the launch of a women centre and livelihood support to 450 in Toungo, Adamawa.

Mr David Peter, Deputy Project Manager of ANI Foundation, said the programme was created to empower women and foster community development through the savings and loan groups.

Dr Ibrahim Goni, the Conservator-General (C-G) of the National Parks Service (NPS), said the launch of the Women’s Centre and livelihood support to 450 women reflected the shared vision of the foundation and NPS to empowerment and economic transformation.

Represented by Assistant Conservator-General (ACG) Mohammed Kabir, the C-G said the partnership has brought significant transformation and development to the fortunes of Gashaka Gumti National Park and communities surrounding it.

“You may recall that in October 2023, Gashaka LGA in Taraba hosted one of the largest empowerment events of its kind, serving as a pilot initiative where over 1,000 women were uplifted through a similar economic empowerment event.

“They gained not just skills but the confidence to thrive. Beneficiaries received assets to help support their livelihoods, including four agro-processing machines, 10 hairdressing kits, 20 sewing machines and 20 clippers.

“Additionally, 13 Women’s Savings and Loan Groups (SLGs) were established in Toungo. Each of these initiatives serves as a stepping stone toward economic independence and self-sufficiency for families that would otherwise depend on our dwindling resources.

“It is important to note that, in addition to empowering women and youth groups, our partnership also addresses the needs of pastoralists.

“Currently, over 100,000 cattle have been vaccinated across both sectors of the park, Gashaka and Gumti, ensuring the safeguarding of our households.

“This partnership has also created jobs for our unemployed youths; over 70 rangers have been selected, trained and are currently engaged in protecting our invaluable park resources.

“This effort not only strengthens our conservation initiatives but also allows the participation of the indigenous people in the management of our essential resources,” he said.

Mrs Nedo Kafulto, Adamawa Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, said it was gratifying to see such efforts come to life while noting its tremendous impact on women in particular and society in general.

“It’s an honour to stand before you this morning on behalf of Gov. Umaru Fintri of Adamawa and the First Lady. I commend the ANI Foundation and everyone involved in this lovely initiative,” she said.

Mr Amos Hamman, Conservator of Park, Gashaka Gumti National Park, said the initiative, sponsored by the ANI Foundation and implemented by Roshan Renewables, began with the signing of a partnership agreement with the National Park Service in 2017.

“This programme started when the NPS went into a partnership with ANI in 2017, and the essence was to see that within the support zone of the park, they have something to do that will reflect the importance of the natural resources in the park,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr George Okeyoyin, ANI Foundation’s Senior Strategic Adviser, said the impact of livelihood support in effective conservation could not be overemphasised.

“It is important that we provide alternative means of livelihood for the support communities for them to be able to support the conservation efforts in the Gashaka Gumti National Park, and that is why we are here today.

“I want to acknowledge the role of the NPS and ANI Foundation in this notable programme. It is vital to mention also that the foundation is doing all these so that beneficiaries will support its conservation efforts,” Okeyoyin said.

Mr Happy Amos, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Roshan Renewables, the implementing partner of the scheme, said over N30 million has been saved by the women’s savings and loan groups in Toungo in one year.

“Initially, we didn’t give money to them. We still don’t give them money even at this stage. The arrangement is that we offer them low-interest loans, and it’s usually based on their needs.

“There are some women who only need N200,000 or N100,000. Some women even need just N30,000 to improve and expand their business, and we give them this at zero interest rate,” she said.

Some of the beneficiaries, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), lauded the efforts of the foundation towards improving their livelihood, stating that their lives have not remained the same since the coming of ANI.

One of the beneficiaries, Grace Emmanuel, said a lot has changed in her life with the support she got from ANI Foundation.

“I don’t bother about what to eat or how to send my children to school anymore since I got the support from ANI, through which I am able to get loans, produce and sell my products in the community and beyond,” she noted.

Mrs Florence Dauda, another beneficiary, was also full of praises for the foundation, saying its coming was the best thing that has ever happened to the community.

“We used to envy the women at the Gashaka end of the park because of the things we heard ANI was doing there.

“We are now involved, and you can see the array of products we have on ground due to the savings and loan groups through the empowerment initiative,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Enugu East Council Chairman, Mr Beloved-Dan Anike, on Saturday inaugurated the Enugu East Land Mediation Centre, a move to foster peace and development within communities and address land issues.

Signing the bill into law during a ceremony attended by dignitaries and local officials in the council headquarters in Nkwo Nike, Anike said, “The establishment of this centre is crucial, especially given the rising significance of land as a vital asset globally.

“With the influx of residents and investors into our urban area, we have seen a corresponding increase in land disputes that often escalate into lengthy court battles”.

According to him, the centre aims to provide an Alternative Dispute Resolution platform, allowing individuals to address land-related issues amicably without the need for court intervention.

“I am optimistic that this centre will significantly reduce land disputes, conserve our resources, and foster better relationships among our community members,” Anike added.

He, however, extended an open invitation to anyone experiencing land disputes to approach the centre for assistance, assuring them of a peaceful resolution process that would safeguard their investments.

He stressed that the centre would mark a turning point in the management of land disputes, ultimately contributing to a more peaceful and prosperous council area.

In a remark, Justice Okey Anike of the Enugu State High Court, praised the initiative, stating that the mediation centre would serve as a beacon of hope for many who have felt trapped in protracted disputes.

Antimicrobial resistance deadlier than HIV, TB, malaria—NCDC

Antimicrobial resistance deadlier than HIV, TB, malaria—NCDC

241 total views today

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has raised alarm over the growing threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

The NCDC described AMR as a ‘silent killer’ deadlier than malaria, Tuberculosis (TB), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) combined.

Dr Jide Idris, Director General, NCDC, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in Abuja, highlighting the urgent need to tackle the global health threat, which many Nigerians remained unaware of.

Idris said, “AMR is a silent killer. It kills more than the combination of malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS together. The worst thing is that not much is known about it, especially among the public. It has become a global focus.

“AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites evolve to resist the effects of medications—making common infections harder to treat and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death.

“This resistance, while naturally occurring, is significantly accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents in humans, animals, and agriculture.

“It is unacceptable that most Nigerians don’t know how dangerous AMR is; We must act now,” the DG said.

He said that the Federal Government had stepped up its response and that the country was already working on implementing its National Action Plan on AMR 2.0, which has strategic pillars including Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)antimicrobial stewardship, and financing.

“AMR was supposed to be part and parcel of our current health programmes. We are now about to roll out specific programmes targeting AMR.

“These efforts will include IPC, antimicrobial stewardship, and sustainable financing—these are critical areas we’re looking at,” he added.

Idris also announced that Nigeria was set to host the next Global Ministerial Conference on AMR in 2026, a landmark event that would bring global attention to the issue.

“This is a huge responsibility for us.

“We will begin planning for the conference next year. We have already created various committees to plan this programme, but unfortunately, we have yet to secure funding.

“Hosting this conference is a major opportunity for Nigeria to lead on global AMR advocacy,” he said.

The NCDC boss also highlighted the importance of awareness, particularly among the public and healthcare providers, to stop the rampant misuse of antibiotics in the country.

“In terms of awareness, it is imperative to create education for Nigerians on how dangerous AMR is. People must stop having unnecessary access to antibiotics.

“If you must take antibiotics, it must be based on the prescription of a licensed doctor. People should not be going to buy over-the-counter antibiotics. People should stop prescribing antibiotics for themselves,” he said.

He decried some of the harmful cultural practices and healthcare habits in Nigeria that contributed to the worsening AMR crisis.

According to him, healthcare workers are also guilty. They often don’t take proper patient history or make accurate diagnoses before prescribing antibiotics. Many times, those patients don’t even need the drugs.”

He warned that AMR posed a significant risk to the entire healthcare system, and even to routine medical procedures like surgeries, childbirth, and chemotherapy.

Idris urged Nigerians to take AMR seriously, stating, “This issue is huge and must be given the attention it deserves.

“Creating awareness is the first step to saving lives. We must all take responsibility,” the DG said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Flooding: South-East Govts., NEMA declare zero tolerance for silted drains

Flooding: South-East Govts., NEMA declare zero tolerance for silted drains

331 total views today

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu State Governments have declared zero tolerance for blocked or silted up drains to avert flooding in the zone.

They made the declaration in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) survey on preparations for the 2025 flood predictions in the South-East by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

NAN reports that NIMET identified 30 states that would likely experience heavy rains and possible flooding.

The Head of Operations NEMA in Enugu, Mrs Ngozi Echeazu, said the agency started early sensitisation and action plans to avert the incidents of flash flood within major metropolis and highly populated areas within the South-East.

She said that the agency had remained proactive knowing that the 2025 Flood Prediction forecasted an early onset of rains in the South-East.

Echeazu, whose office covers NEMA operations in Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu States, noted that the agency had held some engagements with its partners and critical stakeholders on the need to start early on all sensitisation and action-plan.

She said that NEMA had written to state governments, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and council areas on the 2025 Flood Prediction stating the need for all to start preparations to forestall flash flood usually coming with early rains.

According to her, with active collaboration of Enugu SEMA, Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC), NEMA has carried massive sensitisation in major markets in two local governments within Enugu metropolis, whose locations had high population and human activities.

Echeazu noted that during the sensitisation, NEMA and its partners reached out to the market leadership, traders and passers-by on the need to check dumping of refuse in drains and waterways as well as desilt of all drains.

“We are using the NYSC-NEMA Vanguard to reach out to schools and playgrounds and fields to sensitise youths, who are the ones that evacuate their families’ waste, to do it properly and desist from dropping them indiscriminately,” she said.

The operational head noted that the agency’s sensitisation had not been full blown since the awaited logistics support from headquarters was yet to arrive, adding: “We are doing the ones within Enugu to manage cost.”

Corroborating, the Chairman of the Enugu South LGA, Chief Caleb Ani, said that for the past two months, the council had embarked on ‘operation open drainages’.

The chairman said that the council had deployed resources to ensure that major drainages and waterways were opened.

Ani noted that ward councillors and neighbourhood chairmen had been engaged and sensitised on the need to complement what the council had done by desilting drainages and waterways in their areas.

The chairman noted that he had briefed market chairmen and heads that indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road and on drainages especially in Mayor and Garki Markets would not be tolerated any more.

“We want to ensure that proactive steps are taken to forestall all forms of flooding, be it the initial flash flood or the main flood in the later part of the year as forecast by NIMET,” he said.

In Anambra, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr Felix Odimegwu, said the state government has kicked off a statewide campaign codenamed “Operation Clear Your Waterways”.

He said that the whole essence of the statewide campaign was to clear the drainages for free flow of flood water ahead of the rainy season across the communities and cities of the state.

Odimegwu said that the enforcement had already commenced, saying that the campaign was in pursuant to Public Health Law, Drainage Management Policy and Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law.

He disclosed that the proactive measure initiated was in line with Gov. Charles Soludo’s vision to transform Anambra into a smart mega city.

Odimegwu said that the state already braced up to the challenges hence reasons for the state’s quick response to the 2025 weather prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

“To prevent potential flooding and associated risks, we have declared a zero-tolerance policy on blocked or silted drains,” he said.

Odimegwu urged residents to evacuate all de-silted debris around their domain warning that offenders would be prosecuted according to the law.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has blamed incessant flooding at Anor Community in Ivo Local Government Area to abandoned dam project.

Mr Clement Ovuoba, Executive Secretary of the agency, revealed that a section of the uncompleted dam had collapsed thereby causing flooding annually in the area.

According to him, lives, houses, farmlands and outputs are affected during the rainy season.

He explained that during the rainy season, two rivers in the area merge together, finding its way into the dam, overflowing and splitting apart because of the damage.

“Ivo abandoned dam is another place we have serious flooding in the state during rainy season.

“Ngwongwo, Okwe and Amokwe in Anor Community where the dam is situated, have suffered for years now,” Ovuoba said.

He called on the Federal Government to pay attention to the perennial experience and intervene by ensuring completion of the dam project in the area to mitigate flood.

He commended the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) on the Iyiudele drainage project and others in the capital city and stressed the need to channel the Ebonyi River to reduce flooding.

The SEMA official disclosed its readiness against any eventual flooding in the state and announced reactivation of effective response.

He said the reactivation followed the release of seasonal rainfall prediction and warning of heavy rainfall in 30 states, including Ebonyi by NIMET in its weather forecast.

He said that the state had commenced sensitisation campaign through jingles, public lectures on disaster control and advocacy visits to avert any emergency.

He urged those in the affected areas to avoid building on water ways, clean up drainages and utilise other key information and warning to avert flood.

“We have reactivated town hall meetings across the state and reached flood prone places such as Ivo, Ikwo, Izzi, Abakaliki, Afikpo North LGAs to pay attention to warnings.

“The locations are always impacted by flooding,” he said.

He further disclosed reactivation of its temporary Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDP) across the 13 LGAs in the state as steps taken to avert flooding.

He said that the temporary IDP camps, located across the state would accommodate 2,000 IDPs.

“The camps comprised churches with school dormitories and other school structures.

“They were not built as permanent camps but improvised to enable affected victims relocate to safety. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Federal Government has commenced free six months training for 120 Plateau youths on poultry farming.

The training is through the National Youth Skills Acquisition Fund (NYESAF), under the Innovation, Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project.

Dr Daniel Jarafu, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) VetVille Nigeria Limited, one of Federal Government’s training service providers in charge of the training, said this on Saturday in Jos, at the inauguration of the programme.

Jarafu said the project was a deliberate effort by the Federal Government to empower youths with skills that would make them skillful, self-sufficient, employers of labour and in turn, boost economic growth of the nation.

According to him, the six months training is segmented into three months theoretical and three months practical aspects.

He further explained that at the end of the programme the trainees would sit for the National Skills Qualifications (NSQs) Examination to earn a national certification which would be equivalent to certification earned in the formal education system.

Earlier, Prof. Arhyel Balami, the Guest of Honour, said the initiative by the Federal Government was highly laudable as it would lead to the empowerment of youths with hands on agricultural skills that would make them productive with sustainable livelihoods.

Balami urged the trainees to make the best use of the training by being diligent, showing up and paying rapt attention during the course of the training.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NYESAF is to train 75,000 youths nationwide, with the aim of enhancing job creation, entrepreneurship, and economic independence among young Nigerians.

By Talatu Maiwada

An NGO, Debbie Kauna Foundation (DKF), on Saturday empowered no fewer than 306 Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) with business start-up kits in Adamawa.

Dr Olaniyi Aderibigbe, Project Analyst, UN Women, disclosed this at the completion of three months vocational training for the participants from Michika and Madagali Local Government Areas of Adamawa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was organised by DKF, with funding from the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund (NHF) and technical support from the UN Women Nigeria.

Aderibigbe said the beneficiaries were selected based on their vulnerability and potential for growth.

“Michika and Madagali LGAs were selected because of the high number of displaced women and girls with disabilities.

“We empowered 253 women and 53 men including young girls and boys aimed at promoting protection, dignity and economic empowerment for the PwDs.

“The women were not only trained but also paired with mentors to ensure they stay on track after receiving their kits.

“We want them to be resilient and support themselves and their families,” he said.

Mrs Deborah Bubwa, Founder DKF, said the women were allowed to pick the skills they found most practical in their local environment.

“Each woman told us what they could do without stress and what would sell in their community.

“Each beneficiary was trained in a skill of her choice including tailoring, backyard gardening, poultry farming.

“Others are tie and dye, shoemaking, rice processing and livestock management,” she said.

Bubwa said the foundation’s team spent six weeks moving from house to house across the two LGAs to identify and profile the right beneficiaries.

She said after the screening exercise, the women received entrepreneurship training with a focus on accessing micro-loans and managing small businesses.

The start-up kits, according to Bubwa, are free grants under the NHF, adding that the foundation opened bank accounts for each of the beneficiaries.

She said each of the beneficiaries were assigned mentors, trained for three months and would continue to receive the needed support.

“Our mission is to empower women and girls with disabilities so they can stop begging and start living dignified lives like everyone else,” she said.

Hauwa Vandu, a beneficiary from Shuwa, in Madagali LGA, praised the foundation for such a rare opportunity, saying the training had changed her life tremendously.

“I used to think nobody saw me. Now I know I matter, and am happy that despite my disability I can live a productive life,” she said.

Highlight of the event was distribution of start-up kits for the beneficiaries. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Bribe, torture allegations against Seyi Tinubu unfounded – Group

Bribe, torture allegations against Seyi Tinubu unfounded – Group

Education for Accelerated Development (EAD), a Civil Society Organisation, says the recent allegation of bribery against Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu is unfounded.
A factional leader of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Atiku Isah, had alleged that Seyi offered him bribe of N100 million naira to support the re-election bid of his father.
However, the Chairman of EAD, Dr Abdulkadir Fuad, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday described the allegation as a hoax and piece of fabrication.
Fuad urged members of the public to ignore the allegations.
“To begin with, the man masquerading as NANS president is an impersonator who goes about seeking cheap relevance in the name of the students body.
“The last time we checked, NANS president was Olusola Ladoja, who is the legitimately and legally recognised leaders of Nigerian students.
“A factional leader of NANS known as Atiku Isah alleged that he was offered a bribe of N100 million naira to support the re-election of President Tinubu. This is totally untrue.
“The election is in 2027 and the President’s son is busy pushing for better welfare for Nigerian youths in his father’s administration and is least concerned about election that is still two years away.
“When Tinubu won in 2023, was it with the support of someone like Isah or the collective mandate of an overwhelming majority of Nigerians? He won against all odds.
“The masses who backed him in 2023 are even happier with reforms he has initiated to boost the nation’s socio-economic landscape,” Fuad said.
He challenged anyone to tender evidence of bribery against Seyi Tinubu to the appropriate authorities.
The EAD chairman alleged that some people were envious of the public acceptance the President’s son was gaining among the youth population in every part of the country.
He described as unfounded, the allegations against Seyi of torture, abduction and attempt to disrupt the inauguration of NANS leadership in Abuja.
“If someone believes that Tinubu’s son is involved in a crime and refused to report to the security agencies it means such a person is trying to malign and discredit Seyi Tinubu,” he told NAN. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The ACCI boss said that the theme for the 2025 World Press Freedom Day tagged, “Reporting in the Brave New World, The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media”, was timely, thought-provoking and calls for attention to the rapidly evolving digital landscape.

“The digital landscape, where artificial intelligence is reshaping on how information is created, consumed and regulated.

“As AI influences the journalism profession, the need to uphold ethical standards, ensure truthfulness, and protect press freedoms remains paramount,” he said.

Obegolu explained that the World Press Freedom Day was a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by journalists around the world.

He said that some of the journalists paid the ultimate price in pursuit of the truth.

“The ACCI joins the global community in celebrating World Press Freedom Day 2025.

“A day that underscores the vital role of a free, independent and responsible press in the advancement of democratic societies, economic development, and good governance.

“We honour their memory and pledge our continuous support for a free and safe press.

“At ACCI, we acknowledge the unwavering support and partnership of the media over the years,” he said.

Obegolu said the press has been instrumental in amplifying the chamber’s voice, promoting advocacy for private sector development and advancing the interests of the business community within and beyond the Federal Capital Territory.

He added that their coverage has significantly contributed to visibility, policy impact and stakeholder engagement.

The president also said that the press remained a vital pillar in the chamber’s movement globally.

“Through accurate and balanced reportage, journalists help create an informed business environment, encourage investment and hold institutions accountable.

“We commend the courage, professionalism and resilience of media practitioners, especially those who report under challenging conditions.

“In commemorating this important day, the ACCI, reaffirms commitment to supporting the press through strategic engagement, media partnerships and advocacy for freedom of expression and access to information.

“As we celebrate today, we encourage media professionals to remain steadfast in upholding the ethics of the profession while embracing innovation and new technologies responsibly.

“Together, we can build a press that is empowered, secure and aligned with the aspirations of a just and prosperous society,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
