He said, “Indeed, the governor has made us proud. AFAN is very proud of him on behalf of all farmers in the state.

Transform service, don’t condemn – FG tells new NCoS C-G
By Ibironke Ariyo
The Federal Government has urged the newly decorated Controller General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Sylvester Nwakuche, to spearhead the transformation of the service by prioritising rehabilitation and reform over punishment.
The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the appeal during the decoration ceremony in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Senate, on March 25, confirmed the appointment of Nwakuche as the substantive NCoS C-G.
Nwakuche, who replaced Haliru Nababa, was appointed in an acting capacity by President Bola Tinubu on Dec. 13, 2024
While addressing the newly decorated NCoS C-G, the minister emphasised the need for strong leadership, accountability, and a clear vision to drive the future of the correctional system.
Tunji-Ojo stated, “Mr President has placed his trust in you by selecting you as C-G. It is crucial that you fully understand your mandates, objectives and goals, and ensure you set clear timelines for achieving them.
“You have a huge national responsibility to protect over 256 custodial centres. You must lead from the front,” he said.
The minister tasked Nwakuche with establishing a strong foundation for the service over the next 19 months, highlighting the importance of improving operational standards and creating a lasting legacy.
“We want stability in the NCoS. We do not want a condemnation service but a transformative one. We want custodial centres to be a place where hopes will be renewed,” he stated.
Highlighting the humane aspect of corrections, the minister described inmates as “awaiting assets” to the nation, urging the CG to treat them with dignity.
“All inmates are your children. Do not maltreat your children, but correct them so they can be better,” he said.
Also, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, reiterated the weight of the expectations ahead.
“You have a lot to do. Nigerians and the Ministry of Interior are looking up to you. We want to change the narrative of the correctional service,” she said.
In his remarks, Nwakuche conveyed his heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Nigerian Correctional Service, describing it as a “defining moment” for the institution.
He said that the honour came not merely as a promotion, but as a renewed call to duty and a higher charge to advance the vision of a correctional system that was secure, humane, and truly reformative.
The NCoS boss outlined a seven-point agenda of reform, prioritising security, decongestion, infrastructure, staff welfare, and inmates’ rehabilitation.
“The safe custody of inmates is our primary responsibility.
“This administration will focus on expanding manpower, strengthening surveillance, and promoting non-custodial measures to ease overcrowding.
“With over two-thirds of our inmate population being Awaiting Trial Persons, we will aggressively pursue decongestion by engaging the judiciary, state governments, and other stakeholders,” he said.
Nwakuche also pledged to invest in staff training and welfare, modernise facilities, and prioritise the youth rehabilitation.
“Our youths must not be lost to the streets or to crime. We will revitalise and expand Borstal Institutions to provide correction, character reformation, and hope to young offenders,” he said.
The NCoS C-G called on staff and partners to support the reform agenda, stressing, “together, we can make the Service a shining example of what purposeful leadership and dedicated teamwork can achieve.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu tasks governors on performance
By Salif Atojoko
President Bola Tinubu has called on governors to remain focused on delivering tangible results that improve the lives of their people, urging them to disregard armchair critics.
The President gave the charge during a two-day visit to Katsina, adding that the accurate measure of leadership is a positive, visible impact.
“Let the people be at the heart of your programmes. Your hard work and concrete achievements will answer any criticism. Ignore distractions – your results will speak for you,” he said.
The President commissioned a 24 kilometre road, which Gov. Dikko Radda completed within 18 months.
He also commissioned the Katsina Agricultural Mechanised Centre.
The road commissioned was the Eastern Bypass, which stretched from Dutsin-ma Road through Kano and Daura Roads and terminated at Yandaki in the Kaita Local Government Area.
“We have decided for peace and stability. I know you face terrorism and banditry attacks in the state, but you have shown determination and courage to move Katsina State forward.
“You will not walk alone. The federal government will be with you,” he added.
Tinubu noted that hunger and poverty remained the biggest threats to peace in the country.
“The economy is sailing in the right trajectory. Today, we are seeing an effort to banish hunger and a commitment to food security and the empowerment of our people.
“Small and large-scale farming will be encouraged. Once we liberate ourselves from hunger, we will appreciate peace and harmony.
“The remarkable progress in the state will continue to be rewarded. I want to assure the Nigerian public that agriculture is the heart of our progress and must be for all.
“We have dedicated ourselves to food security. We must invest in mechanisation and water management. The old style of agriculture is gone,” he stated.
The President said the Bank of Agriculture would be resuscitated and properly repositioned to meet farmers’ needs and improve farming and agricultural production.
“When resuscitated, the bank will make funds available for large, medium and small-scale farming,” he said.
Tinubu commended Radda for impacting agriculture, healthcare, education and infrastructure in less than two years.
“I listened to your report card. It is a big task. In just half of your tenure, you have made remarkable progress.
“The commitment you have shown and the efforts you have put into government are highly commendable. You are a patriot, a son, and a progressive mind with honesty.
“It was difficult during the election when you started, thanks to former Governors like Ibrahim Shema, the bridge builder Aminu Masari and Waziri of the universe, Ibrahim Masari.
“I want to congratulate the great people of Katsina for making the right choice by electing Radda. We have been collaborating with him for the good of the state and the country,” the President added.
President Tinubu challenged the governors to pay more attention to agriculture.
“You have introduced a great, progressive movement in Katsina State by just tilling the land and putting the land to use. Farming will be our source of prosperity and growth.
“We should remove ourselves from reliance on oil and commit to agriculture. It will bring prosperity. I commend you for the mechanisation programme.
“It is a great investment, and I hope others can learn from it. The construction of the 24-km road speaks volumes about the effectiveness of the government. I say thank you,” President Tinubu said.
He thanked past governors of the state for purposeful leadership and appreciated the traditional council, Katsina, and Daura Emirates for supporting the country’s unity, peace, and progress.
“Thank you for the great honour that you have given me. Your coming to the airport to receive me made me feel so welcome. I am your son, and I am one of you.
“You’ve demonstrated commitment and sincerity to the unity and peace of our country.
“God will continue honouring and raising you in grace for our country. For me, this is homecoming, and Katsina is home. Home to progress, development and freedom for good,” he added.
Radda, on his part, said the Katsina Agricultural Mechanized Centre would serve the 34 local councils in the state, noting that 400 tractors had been purchased with the federal government’s N25 billion intervention.
He said 160 km of roads had been constructed, and some rehabilitated within the state over the period, while power, water supply, and healthcare facilities had improved people’s lives.
Radda added that the Ministry of Agriculture had supplied the state with 4,000 pumping machines to enhance irrigation farming.
He said 448,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser were distributed to farmers last year, and this year, they would receive 400,000 metric tonnes.
The governors of Borno, Benue, Kaduna, Kwara, and Jigawa states attended the commissioning.
Former Governors Aminu Masari and Ibrahim Shema, as well as ministers of culture, solid minerals, and agriculture, were also present. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

NGO sensitises CAN leaders on building regulations
By Mercy Omoike
Thrivescape Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, has sensitised Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leaders, Alimosho Chapter, on compliance with urban planning and building regulations to prevent building collapse and drive zero demolition.
Ms Tosin Ayodele, during the “Avoidance is Better than Building Collapse/Demolition” campaign, on Thursday in Lagos, emphasised the importance of bridging knowledge gaps in constructing a building.
According to Ayodele, the thrivescape campaign is designed to tackle the root causes of demolition and structural failures.
She called for partnership in achieving zero demolition and building collapse to promote livable and sustainable cities where everyone can thrive.
Ayodele outlined key factors that led to building demolition to include encroachment into setbacks and rights of way, construction under high-tension power lines, building in flood-prone zones, canals, or other unsafe areas.
She noted that development without obtaining physical planning permits, construction on government acquisition lands, non-compliance with approved building plans and poor building maintenance resulted in distressed structures.
Ayodele added that use of substandard materials and unqualified personnel, foundational failures, poor structural design and inadequate building maintenance contributed to the menace.
She called on the faith leaders to champion the cause of safer buildings by encouraging their congregations to always obtain the necessary development permits.
She implored them to engage qualified professionals instead of unlicensed builders, adhere strictly to approved building plan and avoid constructing in unsafe or unauthorised locations, regardless of cost.
“Demolitions and collapses are devastating and heart-wrenching.
“They are often preventable, and we must treat prevention as a moral and civic duty,” she stated.
Ayodele called on CAN leadership to collaborate with Thrivescape Initiative by inviting them to their worship centres to extend this awareness campaign to them.
The Chairman, CAN, Alimosho Chapter, Rev. Samuel Adeyemi, commended the initiative, describing it as timely, relevant, and necessary.
Adeyemi expressed their commitment to collaborating with Thrivescape Initiative on outreaches and to educate more citizens, with the ultimate goal of eliminating building collapses and demolitions in Lagos State.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Aba supporters laud Flying Eagles’ win against Tunisia
By Nicholas Obisike
Some football supporters in Aba have lauded the Flying Eagles of Nigeria`s 1-0 win against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia and called for injection of creative midfielders into the team.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Auwal Ibrahim’s goal in the 38th minute separated the two teams in the ongoing under-20 AFCON match played inside, 30 June Stadium, Cairo, Egypt on Thursday.
Some supporters, who spoke to NAN on Friday, lauded the team and observed that the team still needs improvement in some departments.
Emeka Maduakolam urged the technical crew to work more on the defence, noting that the department was frequently exposed in the match against Tunisia.
“Throughout the match, Nigeria’s defence was frequently exposed especially, during transitions and wide attacks and their positioning left gaps that Tunisia attempted to exploit.
“The defensive frailty if not addressed, could cost Nigeria dearly against more clinical opposition as future matches demand better tactical awareness,” he said.
Ikechukwu Uche said that Nigeria’s wing play lacks penetration and urgency because the wingers were unable to stretch the Tunisian defence or deliver dangerous balls into the box consistently.
Uche called for pacy and technically gifted wide players, who can beat defenders, create space in tight situations and inject youthful speed and flair on the flanks.
Mary Udoka observed that Nigeria’s transitions were slowed down by excessive touches and indecision from the players.
She urged the team to adopt a more direct and quick transition style.
“Flying Eagles must reduce time on the ball, increase forward momentum as speed in execution is crucial in modern football, especially when breaking down compact defences,” she advised.
Celestine Maduka called for more creativity in the midfield, noting that the midfielders struggled to assert control or effectively distribute the ball.
“Lack of fluidity limited Flying Eagles attacking chances and isolated the forwards, we need more imaginative and dynamic midfielders capable of quick passes and vision,” Maduka said.
NAN reports that the Eagles are the most successful Youth team in Africa, having won the title a record 7 times in 1983,1985, 1987 and 1989 (four times consecutively), 2005, 2011 and 2015. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Record-breaking African Spinach found in Ekiti
By Joan Odafe
A towering 9.5-foot tall African Spinach has been discovered in Ikoro-Ekiti, a town in Ekiti.
The plant, locally known as ‘Efo Tete,’ which is possibly the tallest ever recorded in Africa, has sparked scientific curiosity and tourism interest.
The Director-General of Ekiti State Tourism Development Bureau, Mr Wale Ojo-Lanre, said the spinach, which is still growing and yet to produce seeds, was discovered in the backyard of Mr Lawrence Ajolokan, a farmer in Eso-Obe Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the state.
“This isn’t just a plant. It’s a potential world record holder, a scientific curiosity, and a tourism gem all wrapped in one,” Ojo-Lanre said.
According to Ajolokan, he planted the seed in June 2024 and had harvested parts of the plant previously.
The farmer, however, said he had consistently avoided harvesting one particular stalk due to a strange instinct that “something” told him not to weed or harvest it.
While left untouched, the spinach kept growing to its current height of 9.5 feet, still growing with no visible fruiting yet.
Ajolokan said he hadn’t realised the plant’s uniqueness until Mr Lester Olaifa, a journalist and community leader at Ikoro, drew his attention to its unique height and thickness, while visiting his farm.
The Chairman of Eso-Obe LCDA, Mr Bankole Ayeni, said that protective measures were put in place to preserve the plant.
This is as interest from both the tourism and agricultural sectors increase, as the spinach has surpassed the tallest known African Spinach recorded at 8.3 feet in Benue in 2018.
The traditional ruler of the community, Olukoro of Ikoro-Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Adeleye, praised the state government for its swift response upon discovery of the unique plant.
“Ikoro is not just an ancient town but a custodian of living heritage,” he said.
NAN reports that the bureau has commenced documentation and is consulting agricultural experts to investigate the factors behind the plant’s unusual growth, as well as to discuss plans for its preservation and future exhibition. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
