Presidency disclaims 2027 campaign billboards

The Presidency says it has observed the increasing number of billboards in some cities promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“Worth noting is that some of these billboards with pictures of the President and his wife, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, emblazoned on them are springing up in Abuja and Kano in particular,” Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President’s spokesman, said in a statement on Sunday.

While Tinubu and Shettima greatly appreciated their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support, the two leaders did not support any campaign that breached the laws of the land, continued the statement.

It added that the electoral law guiding the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbade any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections.

“Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages.

“As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process.

“Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel,” said the statement.

The President, therefore, called on individuals and groups funding the 2027 political campaign through the ongoing deployment of materials on billboards nationwide to cease immediately.

“President Tinubu and his deputy are fully committed to delivering the ongoing task of nation-building they have set for themselves.

“This commitment is evident in their focus on economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security.

“When INEC signals that the processes for the 2027 elections can start, President Tinubu will duly inform Nigerians of his plans,” concluded the statement. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Pastor Joseph Omorinoye, General Overseer of House of Prayer Assembly (Basilica) Ilorin, on Sunday distributed 1,000 bags of 10kg rice to church members.

Speaking during the Palm Sunday Service, Omorinoye said that the rice was a gift for Easter and also to cushion the effect of the economic hardship in the country.

He said that the church members deserved special package to celebrate the Easter.

“Today is Palm Sunday and I deem it necessary to support my members towards the upcoming Easter celebration.

“We have 1,000 bags of 10kg rice to distribute to members today because they deserve special package.

“We want every member to celebrate the resurrection of Christ Jesus with smile and hope,” the General Overseer said.

He also advised members to always emulate the love of Christ and be blessings to others.

The clergyman implored other men of God and religious leaders to always support their members and not just seek their financial support for church projects.

In separate interviews with some of the members of the congregation, they commended Omonrinoye for the Easter gift.

Mrs Alice Abolarin, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said that Omorinoye had always been supportive to members of the church.

“Omorinoye has been trying for us every time. He always surprises us when we least expect. May God continue to bless Baba for us,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Mr Emmanuel Afolabi, said the rice gift came at the right time as he was expecting his relatives to come and celebrate Easter with him.

“I am the happiest man; I am expecting my family members from Lagos to come and celebrate with me and have been thinking on how to get money for rice. Thank God for Baba,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) says it recently concluded the nationwide resettlement of 5,532 beneficiaries trained in various skills under its Renewed Hope Employment Initiative.

The Director-General of NDE, Dr Silas Agara, said this on Sunday during the NDE Special Day at the ongoing 36th Enugu International Trade Fair.

The fair has the theme: “Developing Nigeria’s Industrial Sector SMEs for Economic Advancement and Global Recognition.”

Agara was represented at the event by Mr Edmond Owuliri, the Director, Public Research and Statistics, NDE.

He said that the initiative was designed to equip unskilled and unemployed Nigerians with demand-driven skills to be self-employed, create wealth and reduce poverty.

He said that this year’s fair theme resonates deeply with the mandate of the NDE and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The director-general said that over the years, the agency had remained committed to creating jobs and empowering Nigerian citizens through various programmes and initiatives.

He outlined the programmes that drive the job creation efforts of the directorate to include the Small Scale Enterprises Programme, which he said fosters entrepreneurship and skills development among Nigerians leading to self reliance.

“The Rural Employment Promotion Programme, that provides employment opportunities in rural areas, thereby reducing poverty and inequality through viable agricultural practices.

“The Special Public Works Programme: Implements public works projects that create jobs and stimulate local economies through infrastructural projects and stop-gap job opportunities.

“The Vocational Skills Development Programme: Equips Nigerians with vocational skills and enhances their employability and competitiveness.

“These programmes have been instrumental in promoting economic growth, reducing unemployment, and improving livelihoods across Nigeria,” he said.

Agara said that the agency recognised the importance of collaboration and partnership in driving sustainable development.

He called on government agencies, private sector organisations and civil society groups to join hands with the NDE to promote the growth of SMEs.

“Together, we can create a more prosperous and inclusive economy that benefits all Nigerians,” he said.

Earlier, the President of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Chief Odeiga Jideonwo, lauded the NDE for its role in growing SMEs and creating employment for millions of Nigerians.

He also commended the agency for its consistency in using the fair to showcase its numerous services to Nigerians and how they can take advantage of the services free of charge. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tinubu-Buhari partnership and opposition’s desperate search for validation

Tinubu-Buhari partnership and opposition’s desperate search for validation

The special relationship between President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari has witnessed many remarkable moments. It has experienced dramatic and exciting times, just as there have been challenging moments.

Life changing and sweet memories abound between the two great leaders. Between the two great men, there are recollections of might-have-beens. There are also open testimonies about the gains of the partnership and words of commendation as well as scornful moments.

Nonetheless, the two leaders have trudged on to the admiration of their mutual friends and associates, and bewilderment – I dare say, disappointment – of others who would wish both had long parted ways.

About pleasant times, one important moment readily comes to mind. It was towards the end of 2017, two years into the Buhari presidency. The former president was traveling to Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, for the 5th African Union-European Union Summit, which took place from November 28th to 30th, and had invited Asiwaju Tinubu to join his entourage. Coming from Buhari, the invitation was a pleasant surprise to the then All Progressives Congress National Leader, given that the administration he worked very hard, with others, to bring into existence, had largely sidelined him after taking over power in 2015.

The Cote d’Ivoire invitation, therefore, represented one of the few occasions he would be directly contacted.

As it turned out, taking Tinubu along on that trip proved helpful. Tinubu attended a couple of official meetings and engagements with the former president, including the meeting with the Nigerian Community in Cote d’Ivoire. Buhari alluded to this during that trip.

Speaking about Tinubu, while addressing the Nigerian Community in that country on the sidelines of the summit, the former president had said: “I must thank our Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He has brought me a very beautiful piece of information, which I was not aware of until I sat down and read it. Thank you very much for your hard work, and I will discuss that paper with you.”

Many were wondering at the time as to what piece of information Tinubu had offered Buhari. But at that time, 2019 was around the corner, and Buhari needed to rally his troops for re-election. There was a need, in my view, to tap Tinubu again for his strategic support and rich political network. Each time Tinubu had any opportunity to visit Buhari at the Presidential Villa, it was to offer ideas and suggestions about the way forward for the government and the country. I know this as a fact because I was always there with him.

Tinubu had helped Buhari to power in 2015 after the General’s three previous unsuccessful attempts. An alliance between Buhari’s Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) and Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) that had earlier hit the rocks in 2011 was resuscitated in the run-up to the 2015 election, engendering a working alliance between the North-west and South-west. This was the alliance that put the wind in Buhari’s sail and fired him to the presidency.

For the first time in a long while, the former president recently spoke on this valuable support and fine relationship with Tinubu in a telephone call to the President on his 73rd birthday. According to a statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari underscored the bond between him and Tinubu. He disclosed that his family and himself remain indebted to President Tinubu and other APC leaders for the invaluable contributions they made towards the formation of the party, which catapulted him to the presidency for two terms, and helped to produce another APC administration with Tinubu himself at its head.

“No doubt, the annals of the country will not be complete without bringing into mention, and a recognition of the varied and numerous roles of President Tinubu as an entrepreneur, a party stalwart, a staunch activist, party organiser, party builder, a reliable ally and a serial winner of democratic elections. I am truly proud of my association with the Asiwaju,” the former president said.

President Tinubu, on his part, has at every turn extolled the virtues of former President Buhari. For instance, during Buhari’s 82nd birthday last December 17, Tinubu penned a moving tribute to the former president.

He wrote: “Dear President Muhammadu Buhari, on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations and best wishes to you on your 82nd Birthday.

“As you celebrate this remarkable milestone in Daura, we reflect on your years of dedicated service and leadership, which have significantly shaped the course of our nation. Your steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s advancement and unity inspires many, and your enduring legacy continues to guide our nation’s journey towards prosperity and stability.”

Praising Buhari for his doggedness and resilience in contesting presidential elections in 2003, 2007 and 2011 before winning in 2015 and 2019, inspiring “us never to give up,” President Tinubu assured him: “I will continue to build on the infrastructure legacy you bequeathed to our nation as the leader of our country’s first All Progressives Congress administration.”

From the foregoing, notwithstanding the minor strain engineered by some palace courtiers when the former president was in office, it is apparent that the relationship between Tinubu and Buhari continues to flourish as it was built on mutual respect and affection. And like every association, there are bound to be challenges. About that of Buhari and Tinubu, this strain manifested in the sidelining of Asiwaju, particularly during Buhari’s first term in office, and in the orchestrated moves by some people in the Buhari government to thwart Tinubu’s ascension to the presidency in 2023.

However, it would appear that this relationship has weathered the storms. It is waxing stronger. Contrary to the impression in some quarters, particularly in the camps of some opposition politicians, the remarks by the former president during a visit by APC Governors, who paid him Eid-el-Fitri homage in his Kaduna residence, did not in any way undermine the accord. Underlining his cult-like following in the North, the governors had, during the visit, reportedly urged Buhari to dissuade his CPC associates from leaving APC, noting that doing so would strengthen the governing party against the opposition.

During the visit, Buhari had called on political leaders to embrace humility, transparency, and a citizen-first approach to governance, disclosing that he left office with no personal material gain, emphasizing that true leadership is measured not by personal accumulation, but by public service and impact. Garba Shehu again quoted the former president in a statement he issued: “Leaders must always prioritize the welfare of citizens over personal or partisan interests. I left office with the same physical assets I had before becoming President.” Buhari also expressed satisfaction with the renovations to his Kaduna home and thanked the Tinubu administration for the improvements made inside the building. “Outwardly, the house looks the same, but the renovations have been significant,” he said.

However, regarding the APC Governors’ request that he implore his CPC associates not to leave the party, the former president reportedly declined to commit. While reaffirming his loyalty to APC, he was said to have insisted that others must be allowed to make their own political choices. Some analysts and commentators had interpreted that to mean Buhari was pitching his camps with the opposition.

A deeper analysis of Buhari’s politics lends useful perspectives to his convictions as expressed during the visit by the governors elected on the platform of APC. That remark, embodying a laissez faire attitude, is consistent with Buhari’s politics. A vivid example was during the build-up to the 2019 governorship election in Ogun State when as President he appeared in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, to give the APC flag to Prince Dapo Abiodun, the then candidate of the party for the election. The former president had urged the people of the state to vote for any candidate of their choice. That remark drew flaks from many, but it underscored a principle Buhari has upheld throughout his political career.

It should also be recalled that recently when former Kaduna Governor Nasir el-Rufai defected to the Social Democratic Party and he (el-Rufai) claimed in a BBC Hausa interview that he left the APC with Buhari’s blessings, the former president also used the opportunity to clear the air, insisting he remains fully loyal to the APC and would never abandon the party that made his presidency possible. “I am a proud APC member and I want to always be known as one. I will continue to do everything I can to promote and support the party,” Buhari stated, without directly addressing el-Rufai’s claims.

At the moment, opposition politicians are desperately seeking Buhari’s support and endorsement to validate their 2027 plan. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his cohorts like el-Rufai, former House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and former Governor Bindow Jibrilla of Adamawa State, among others, visited the former president in Kaduna on Thursday to also pay homage to him for the end of Ramadan fasting/Sallah celebrations that occurred two weeks ago.

In all of that and his remarks to the APC Governors that visited him in Kaduna, has former President Buhari, thus far, deviated from or dumped the accord between him and President Tinubu and the spirit of friendship, mutual understanding, cooperation and reciprocal support that underpins their relationship? There is nothing that suggests so. The special relationship between President Tinubu and former President Buhari remains rock solid. The two eminent leaders will continue to cooperate and collaborate to sustain party unity and promote progressive governance.

The National Sugar Development Council (NSDC) and Chinese conglomerate, SINOMACH have agreed to jointly develop a large-scale sugarcane cultivation and processing project in Nigeria.

Executive Secretary of NSDC, Mr Kamar Bakrin, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja, adding that the agreement was expected to attract investments worth up to $1 billion.

According to Bakrin, the initiative is one of the early outcomes of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership championed by President Bola Tinubu.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed.

According to the MoU, SINOMACH will construct a sugar processing plant and develop a sugarcane plantation with an initial annual processing capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes, with a long-term target of one million metric tonnes.

He described the agreement as a strategic milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of self-sufficiency in sugar production.

“2025 is a pivotal year for Nigeria, and we must make bold moves towards food security and economic self-sufficiency,” he said.

Bakrin explained that the project was expected to create thousands of jobs, stimulate rural infrastructure development, conserve foreign exchange, and serve as a model for Nigeria’s broader industrialisation efforts.

“This partnership with SINOMACH is unique. It combines engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) with development financing—an essential model for agro-industrial transformation,” he said.

He added that NSDC would provide all necessary support to ensure smooth project takeoff, including facilitating approvals, land acquisition, and other authorisations.

Also, the Vice President of SINOMACH, Mr Li Yu, commended Nigeria’s implementation of the Nigeria Sugar Master Plan (NSMP), calling it a “sweet revolution” tied to food sovereignty and economic dignity.

“We believe this partnership will not only boost Nigeria’s sugar self-sufficiency but also promote rural development, create employment, and enhance agricultural modernisation,” he said.

Li added that SINOMACH was exploring RMB-based financing models to fund the project, which would help lower financing costs and speed up approvals in China.

He expressed confidence that the chosen host state could eventually become the “Sugar Bowl of West Africa.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

How FG can tackle housing deficit requiring N31trn – Sociologist

How FG can tackle housing deficit requiring N31trn – Sociologist

A Professor of Sociology, Lai Olurode, has urged the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to revoke housing allocations from 1,357 Nigerians across 33 states due to payment defaults.

Olurode, a former Dean, Faculty of Social Science, University of Lagos, said that the socio-economic impact of such cancellation would be huge.

He expressed the concern in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Olurode urged the government to grant the affected individuals more time to make payments.

“I would want government to give those who have applied more time to pay off because private investment in housing is very weak and not many people earn enough to be able to buy land,’’ he said.

He said that Nigeria had a deficit of about 28 million housing units.

He added that a significant proportion of the available housing stock was not habitable because of lack basic amenities.

“There is a deficit of about 28 million units of housing in the country.

“If you even look at the available housing stock, most of the houses, as a matter of fact, are not habitable because of their conditions.

“They have no modern facilities in terms of infrastructure, there is absence of water in some of the houses.”

The professor also said that some of the houses were not accessible.

“That is apart from the fact that some are in slums,’’ he said.

The professor said that the revocation of housing allocations represented lost opportunities for the affected individuals and would exacerbate the critical housing situation.

He said: “That will be compounding the already very precarious housing situation in the country.’’

According to him, addressing the national housing deficit will require at least N31 trillion.

He warned that the cancellation, in addition to the poor condition of some existing houses and population growth, would lead to increased homelessness.

Olurode also noted some limitations of the National Housing Fund, saying it primarily benefitted those in formal employment.

He called for a stronger partnership between the public and private sectors in tackling housing problems, saying that the government could not do it alone.

He, however, regretted that high interest rates discouraged private investment in the sector.

The sociologist emphasised that only a small percentage of Nigerians could genuinely afford housing.

He warned that housing shortage could lead to overcrowding and its attendant social problems.

He highlighted the difficulties Nigerians faced in acquiring land, even in rural areas, due to speculation and land title issues.

He urged the government to encourage private sector participation in housing provision through incentives.

He added that the government should explore alternative payment structures for housing, such as the piecemeal approach in which long-term payments would lead to ownership.

Olurode said that housing should be viewed as a social necessity rather than a purely commercial venture, suggesting the need for government subsidy.

The professor advocated promotion of cooperative housing societies to facilitate home ownership.

He also emphasised the need for improved salaries to enable more workers to afford decent housing. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2025 Mock UTME, conducted on Thursday.

JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known in Abuja on Sunday.

Benjamin urged candidates to check their results by sending “MOCKRESULT” to either 55019 or 66019 using the phone number (SIM) registered for the examination.

He said the optional mock examination was designed to test the board’s annual innovations and provide candidates with an opportunity to experience the Computer-Based Test (CBT) environment.

According to him, the mock examination serves as a trial version of the UTME, allowing the board to test new innovations while helping candidates familiarise themselves with the CBT environment.

Benjamin added that over the years, the initiative had successfully achieved its objectives, addressing noted lapses and equipping candidates with valuable experience for the main examination.

“A total of 200,115 candidates initially expressed interest in participating; however, two candidates later withdrew, resulting in 200,113 registered candidates.

“Of those registered, 73,844 candidates were absent on the day of the examination, and 88 candidates failed the biometric verification screening.

“Consequently, 126,181 candidates successfully sat for the examination, and results for 115,735 of these candidates are now available for viewing.

“Additionally, 10,446 results are still being processed and will be released soon,” he said.

He added that “the board acknowledges the delays experienced by some candidates during the examination and regrets any inconvenience caused.”

According to the board, these challenges are anticipated due to the new features implemented to enhance the overall conduct of the main UTME. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CAN seeks peace, servant leadership as Christians mark Palm Sunday

CAN seeks peace, servant leadership as Christians mark Palm Sunday

By Philomina Attah

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged leaders to rise to the occasion with humility and a clear sense of purpose to ensure peaceful coexistence among their citizens.

The CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said this in Abuja as Christians all over the world mark Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week.

Okoh said that Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where He was welcomed with palm branches and shouts of “Hosanna”.

According to him, this signifies a powerful symbol of peace, humility and hope which is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew 21:1–11, Mark 11:1–11, Luke 19:28–44, and John 12:12–19.

Okoh said that these offered enduring lessons for the nation as it navigates uncertain and challenging times.

“These lessons are especially pertinent as we are once again confronted with a painful reminder of the fragility of peace in our land.

“Jesus’ choice to enter Jerusalem on a donkey symbolising peace and servanthood remains a timeless example.

“Our leaders must embrace the principles of servant leadership, placing the welfare of the people above personal or political interests.

“Amidst insecurity, economic hardship, and displacement, let their actions be marked by compassion, justice and a steadfast commitment to national healing,” he said.

The Association also condemned the recent killings in Plateau State, particularly the attacks of April 4, which claimed the lives of dozens of innocent citizens in Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas.

“These senseless acts of violence represent not only a gross violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life, but also a serious threat to our national unity and peace.

“We call on the security agencies to act swiftly and decisively in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“We also urge all tiers of government to intensify efforts to secure all communities and prevent further bloodshed.

“The continued loss of lives in such tragic circumstances is simply unacceptable,” he said.

The CAN President further appealed to all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, to rise above division and embrace “our shared identity as one people under God”.

According to him, the diverse crowds in Jerusalem were united in hope.

He urged Nigerians to come together in similar manner, with a common purpose to heal the land and build a future grounded in mutual respect, compassion and solidarity.

“Palm Sunday reminds us that even in times of trial, there is hope. The journey to national renewal begins with each of us.

“Let us be mindful of our words and actions, choosing to be peacemakers in our homes, communities, and workplaces.

“Through a shared commitment to truth and justice, we can overcome the pain of the present and help shape a Nigeria where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
