A Professor of Sociology, Lai Olurode, has urged the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to revoke housing allocations from 1,357 Nigerians across 33 states due to payment defaults.

Olurode, a former Dean, Faculty of Social Science, University of Lagos, said that the socio-economic impact of such cancellation would be huge.

He expressed the concern in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Olurode urged the government to grant the affected individuals more time to make payments.

“I would want government to give those who have applied more time to pay off because private investment in housing is very weak and not many people earn enough to be able to buy land,’’ he said.

He said that Nigeria had a deficit of about 28 million housing units.

He added that a significant proportion of the available housing stock was not habitable because of lack basic amenities.

“There is a deficit of about 28 million units of housing in the country.

“If you even look at the available housing stock, most of the houses, as a matter of fact, are not habitable because of their conditions.

“They have no modern facilities in terms of infrastructure, there is absence of water in some of the houses.”

The professor also said that some of the houses were not accessible.

“That is apart from the fact that some are in slums,’’ he said.

The professor said that the revocation of housing allocations represented lost opportunities for the affected individuals and would exacerbate the critical housing situation.

He said: “That will be compounding the already very precarious housing situation in the country.’’

According to him, addressing the national housing deficit will require at least N31 trillion.

He warned that the cancellation, in addition to the poor condition of some existing houses and population growth, would lead to increased homelessness.

Olurode also noted some limitations of the National Housing Fund, saying it primarily benefitted those in formal employment.

He called for a stronger partnership between the public and private sectors in tackling housing problems, saying that the government could not do it alone.

He, however, regretted that high interest rates discouraged private investment in the sector.

The sociologist emphasised that only a small percentage of Nigerians could genuinely afford housing.

He warned that housing shortage could lead to overcrowding and its attendant social problems.

He highlighted the difficulties Nigerians faced in acquiring land, even in rural areas, due to speculation and land title issues.

He urged the government to encourage private sector participation in housing provision through incentives.

He added that the government should explore alternative payment structures for housing, such as the piecemeal approach in which long-term payments would lead to ownership.

Olurode said that housing should be viewed as a social necessity rather than a purely commercial venture, suggesting the need for government subsidy.

The professor advocated promotion of cooperative housing societies to facilitate home ownership.

He also emphasised the need for improved salaries to enable more workers to afford decent housing. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the 2025 Mock UTME, conducted on Thursday.

JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known in Abuja on Sunday.

Benjamin urged candidates to check their results by sending “MOCKRESULT” to either 55019 or 66019 using the phone number (SIM) registered for the examination.

He said the optional mock examination was designed to test the board’s annual innovations and provide candidates with an opportunity to experience the Computer-Based Test (CBT) environment.

According to him, the mock examination serves as a trial version of the UTME, allowing the board to test new innovations while helping candidates familiarise themselves with the CBT environment.

Benjamin added that over the years, the initiative had successfully achieved its objectives, addressing noted lapses and equipping candidates with valuable experience for the main examination.

“A total of 200,115 candidates initially expressed interest in participating; however, two candidates later withdrew, resulting in 200,113 registered candidates.

“Of those registered, 73,844 candidates were absent on the day of the examination, and 88 candidates failed the biometric verification screening.

“Consequently, 126,181 candidates successfully sat for the examination, and results for 115,735 of these candidates are now available for viewing.

“Additionally, 10,446 results are still being processed and will be released soon,” he said.

He added that “the board acknowledges the delays experienced by some candidates during the examination and regrets any inconvenience caused.”

According to the board, these challenges are anticipated due to the new features implemented to enhance the overall conduct of the main UTME. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

CAN seeks peace, servant leadership as Christians mark Palm Sunday

CAN seeks peace, servant leadership as Christians mark Palm Sunday

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged leaders to rise to the occasion with humility and a clear sense of purpose to ensure peaceful coexistence among their citizens.

The CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said this in Abuja as Christians all over the world mark Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week.

Okoh said that Palm Sunday commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where He was welcomed with palm branches and shouts of “Hosanna”.

According to him, this signifies a powerful symbol of peace, humility and hope which is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew 21:1–11, Mark 11:1–11, Luke 19:28–44, and John 12:12–19.

Okoh said that these offered enduring lessons for the nation as it navigates uncertain and challenging times.

“These lessons are especially pertinent as we are once again confronted with a painful reminder of the fragility of peace in our land.

“Jesus’ choice to enter Jerusalem on a donkey symbolising peace and servanthood remains a timeless example.

“Our leaders must embrace the principles of servant leadership, placing the welfare of the people above personal or political interests.

“Amidst insecurity, economic hardship, and displacement, let their actions be marked by compassion, justice and a steadfast commitment to national healing,” he said.

The Association also condemned the recent killings in Plateau State, particularly the attacks of April 4, which claimed the lives of dozens of innocent citizens in Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Areas.

“These senseless acts of violence represent not only a gross violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life, but also a serious threat to our national unity and peace.

“We call on the security agencies to act swiftly and decisively in bringing the perpetrators to justice.

“We also urge all tiers of government to intensify efforts to secure all communities and prevent further bloodshed.

“The continued loss of lives in such tragic circumstances is simply unacceptable,” he said.

The CAN President further appealed to all Nigerians, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation, to rise above division and embrace “our shared identity as one people under God”.

According to him, the diverse crowds in Jerusalem were united in hope.

He urged Nigerians to come together in similar manner, with a common purpose to heal the land and build a future grounded in mutual respect, compassion and solidarity.

“Palm Sunday reminds us that even in times of trial, there is hope. The journey to national renewal begins with each of us.

“Let us be mindful of our words and actions, choosing to be peacemakers in our homes, communities, and workplaces.

“Through a shared commitment to truth and justice, we can overcome the pain of the present and help shape a Nigeria where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

African Spelling Bee 2025 ends in Abuja

The 2025 edition of the African Spelling Bee has concluded in Abuja with a colourful display of intellect, resilience, and cultural pride.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the edition marked the first time the prestigious continental contest has been hosted in West Africa.

Since its inception in 2016, the African Spelling Bee has become a symbol of academic excellence and Pan-African unity, bringing together young minds from across the continent.

This year, spellers from Benin, Cîte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe converged on Nigeria’s capital to compete for top honours and scholarships.

Organised by the African Spelling Bee Federation; a coalition of national spelling bee organisations from over 21 countries, the event was locally hosted by the Nigerian Spelling Bee under the Bee Spelling Competition Initiative.

Nigeria also served as the Local Organising Committee and representative at the event.

Speaking, the National Coordinator of the Nigerian Spelling Bee, Mr Abdulsalam Ibrahim, appealed for increased support from the private sector to sustain literacy programmes.

“Today, we realise that many children, because of technology, cannot spell properly. They abbreviate words, and that was why we introduced this competition,” he said.

Ibrahim revealed that the competition has greatly contributed to improving spelling proficiency and academic performance among Nigerian students.

“Even when they get to university, they are doing well. Most of our scholarship recipients, at least 90 to 95 per cent are in the first-class category,” he added.

The contest also rewards outstanding spellers with substantial scholarships.

The champion in the senior category receives one million naira, while the first and second runners-up receive N500,000 and N300,000 respectively.

In the junior category, the winner receives N500,000, and both runners-up are awarded N300,000 each.

In spite these achievements, Ibrahim expressed concern over the lack of financial backing, noting that the programme currently has no corporate sponsors.

“We have written to many organisations, but there has been no favourable response, although the Federal Ministry of Education has endorsed the initiative, it has not provided any funding.

“We’re calling on the public, especially corporate organisations, to assist us. Since the Federal Government has endorsed the programme, we are hopeful they will take further steps and begin to fund it.

“This year’s competition, the eighth edition of the Nigerian Spelling Bee and the first West African-hosted African Spelling Bee, faced logistical challenges.

“Due to funding constraints, several national teams were unable to attend. Nevertheless, the event proceeded with enthusiasm, highlighting the determination and brilliance of Africa’s young minds”.

Reflecting on the broader purpose of the event, the national coordinator described the African Spelling Bee as more than a contest.

“It is a celebration of Africa’s diverse linguistic and cultural heritage. It inspires, empowers, and unites young minds from every corner of the continent,” he said.

In the Senior Category, Nigeria’s Joshua Chemeremeze emerged champion, followed by Tijani Rahamat (Nigeria) and Shamiso Mutsahuni (Zimbabwe).

The Junior Category was won by Nigeria’s Atsua Joy, with Uganda’s Nakawooua Abigail and Nigeria’s Wilfred Eldad finishing second and third respectively.

Each of the two continental champions received a $10,000 university scholarship, reinforcing the competition’s commitment to academic advancement.

The event also featured a short essay contest.

Zambia’s Gideon Benoni Chisale clinched the top prize in the Senior Category, while Uganda’s Anwitha Hareesh won the Junior Category.

Supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Senior Secondary Education Commission, the competition underscored Nigeria’s influence in promoting educational development across Africa. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Tomato farmers predict produce scarcity over Tuta Absoluta outbreak

Tomato farmers predict produce scarcity over Tuta Absoluta outbreak

By Mercy Omoike

Tomato growers have expressed concern over the recent Tuta Absoluta virus infestation of the crops currently affecting the price of the produce in the various markets across the country.

They expressed their concerns in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

NAN reports that Tuta Absoluta, also known as Tomato Leaf Miner, is well known as a serious pest of tomato crops in Europe, Africa, Western Asia and South and Central America, with larvae causing up to 100% loss if not effectively controlled.

Tuta Absoluta can ravage tomato cultivation in a little above 48 hours – prompting farmers to nickname it Tomato Ebola.

It can breed between 10 and 12 generations in a year with the female capable of laying about 250 to 300 eggs within its lifetime.

The Chairman, Tomato Growers and Processors Association of Nigeria, Mr Rabiu Zuntu, said the recent outbreak of the virus had affected the price of the produce in the local markets.

“The invasion of the Tuta Absoluta virus which began in early March has ravaged some farms up North.

“The virus does not affect the tomatoes much during the wet season except during the hot season. The temperature has been unusually high in recent times, and it causes humidity in soil.

“The virus has affected supplies to markets across the country, that is why you will notice some changes in the price of tomatoes. This is because some tomato farms have been completely destroyed by the virus despite being in the harvest season.

“Now, here in the North, in the market, a 50kg basket of tomato sells for about N30,000 due to the infestation.

“Before the outbreak, a basket of tomato was sold between N5,000 and N10,000, because this is actually the season for tomato harvests,” Zuntu said.

In preventing the spread of the virus, he also noted, “Humidity in the soil poses a more probable cause for the rapid spread of the flu in tomato farms infected.

“The outbreak of Tuta Absoluta virus cannot be prevented totally because no one can stop humidity from taking place. However, we can take some preventive measures to curtail its spread.

“Even when we plant climate-resistant or disease-resistant seeds, they are still susceptible to the Tuta Absoluta virus infestation.

“What we can do to curtail it from spreading is to apply the Integrated Pest Management approach,” he said.

On his part, the National President, Tomatoes and Orchard Processors Association of Nigeria (TOPAN), Mr Bola Oyeleke, said the outbreak had a minimal effect on tomatoes price because the crop is already in its harvest stage.

“Tomato harvest is currently ongoing around the country, so the impact of the Tuta Absoluta virus is not deadly as it was during the off season.

“We can still see tomatoes coming to the market daily but if the infestation is on, it is probably affecting crops newly planted.

“The Tuta Absoluta virus is one of the major problems plaguing tomato cultivation in Nigeria,” Oyeleke said.

He, however, said that to prevent the outbreak of the virus continually, local farmers must work together.

“The only solution is that we have to start introducing more technology for land preparation for our farmers to forestall these frequent outbreaks.

“The land preparation for small scale farmers should be a general thing. If it is in a local government area, they should start land preparation together.

“Embarking on land preparation together will help reduce in preventing pests on their farms,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

“These accomplishments are a testament not just to the Exco, but to the collective will and support of every single member of this club.

“We also succeeded because of your cooperation and the belief in this team.

“As we prepare to hand over the baton, we do so with our heads held high.

“We are proud of our journey, and excited for the future of IBB International Golf and Country Club,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Actors Guild advocates healthy lifestyle for Nollywood thespians

Actors Guild advocates healthy lifestyle for Nollywood thespians

By Joshua Olomu

Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has urged Nollywood actors and other industry players to prioritise healthy lifestyle to avoid imminent health breakdown.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rollas made the call at the beginning of the 2025 “Annual Walk and Wellness Campaign” of the guild, in Abuja.

According to the AGN boss, the spate of health challenges faced by actors in Nollywood in recent times has made the call for healthy living more imperative.

He said the nature of the filmmaking job was so demanding and time-consuming that a lot of industry players, especially actors, have no or little time for their health concerns.

The AGN helmsman, therefore, advised actors to be intentional with their heath and  recognise the signs and symptoms of a potential breakdown and seek immediate help.

“One of the dangers of not knowing your health status is that when sickness hits you, you might just go into an emergency case, and emergency case is what often leads to death.

“Actually, we started the health walk for three years now, and this year at the National Executive Council we decided that all state chapters should of course do theirs at their state capitals.

“The health walk specifically came at an initiative when we noticed that very many actors were sick and were always on the internet seeking for support for their health.

“We decided to look at it holistically first of all, that let’s be proactive, and the only way you can be proactive is to ensure that actors live healthy.

“One of the prerequisites for good health is to have healthy food, have regular exercise, and then we established this walk.

“You may also notice that in the past three years now, the issue of actors coming online to beg for support has diminished drastically.

“It’s no longer as frequent as it used to be, which means people are actually keying into this, signing up on the AGN HMO, signing up on other benefits to be members,” he said.

According to Rollas, the Walk and Wellness Campaign, which was holding simultaneously across the guild’s state chapters, is aimed at prioritising health and wellness within the industry.

He said the campaign would feature a range of activities aimed at promoting comprehensive well-being of actors, including medical screenings, mental health discussions by experts and therapy sessions.

He also encouraged actors to get enrolled in the guild’s health insurance programme in order to access prompt and affordable medical attention whenever the need arises.

“So this is a day we go through medical examination to know those whose cases are  getting worse, so they will begin on time to seek for medical attention.

“Today you can see test kits for malaria, typhoid, HIV, BP, arthritis, and others, all for actors to know their health status,” he said.

In an interview with NAN on the sideline, Mercy Aminu, FCT Mayor of AGN and host of the event, expressed delight for full participation of FCT actors in the event.

“I feel my members are now aware of the need to take their health seriously, which is the essence of this walk.

“It’s known that actors don’t really take their health seriously, not because they don’t want to, but because of their tight schedules of moving from one film set to the other.

“This walk is a reminder for them to take their health seriously, even if they don’t get to do tests every day, at least make sure that they do general tests once in a year.

“As a guild, all we could do, which we are still doing and we will continue to do is telling them to check their health regularly and also watch what they eat,” she said.

Some Nollywood stars who spoke with NAN also lent their voices to the healthy living campaign, while commending the guild’s leadership for the initiative.

Ace actor Benedict Johnson said: “What we are doing today is very necessary for every actor, and we actually need to do this more often.

“So many people walk about without knowing their health status, and they might be having some underlying illness without knowing.

“Through this kind of physical exercise, and of course you can see some doctors here to check on us, cases of sudden death can be averted.”

Sensational actress Empress Njamah, said although AGN was championing the healthy lifestyle campaign for industry players, there was need for actors to take responsibilities for their wellbeing.

“Once you’re 18 and above, you should obviously know that good health is important to your everyday life and how to protect it.

“There are certain things that you cannot impose on people if they are not open-hearted and willing to accept them, a lot of people are just nonchalant about their health.

“However, health is wealth, and it is embarrassing for most of our colleagues to come online to ask for funds for health issues” she said.

NAN reports that the Walk and Wellness Campaign kicked off at the Old Parade Ground, with a lot of Nollywood actors in attendance.(NAN)(nannews.ng)

An analyst, Ms Deborah Olabelurin, has emerged winner of the second edition of the 2025 ‘Hansik’ (Korean food) contest final round held in Abuja, carting home a N1 million cash prize and a trip to Korea.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hansik is widely celebrated for its freshness, varieties, well-seasoned ingredients, deliciousness and high health benefits.

In 2004, the World Health Organisation (WHO) selected Hansik as a ‘model’ for nutritional balancing.

The Hansik contest with the theme:’ Share your Love for Jang-based Korean Food, was in celebration of the UNESCO registration of Jang Culture (Jang Korean Sauces).

The competition, which was organised by the Korea Cultural Centre in Nigeria (KCCN) in collaboration with Korean Food Promotion Institute (KFPI), had 12 finalists with two teammates and Olabelurin emerging  as winners.

The Hansik competition was based on Jang Korean Sauces that featured Korean foods tasting such as cup Ramyeon, cup Tteakbokki, cup Bibimbap, Dakgangjeong and Japchae by Nigerians that are lovers of Korean culture.

Ms Igbayilola Olowu came second, winning N700,000 cash while Mrs Patience Berepele who came third, took home a cash prize of N400,000.

Olabelurin, who felt so excited, said words were not sufficient for her to express her joy.

According to her, the extension of the deadline made her to give the contest a second thought, adding that she did not plan to join this year’s contest after her elimination at the final in 2024.

“Since I love cooking, I just said to myself that there is no harm in trying and here I am, a winner.

“In this year’s contest, I decided to use more of the Korean ingredients, compared to 2024 where I used a bit of their ingredients.

“Since I have an Instagram cooking page, I will work more on the page in order to push out more cooking content, as well as collaborating with KCCN to build community that will grow with food,” she said.

For Olowu, a student, who came second, she said the competition has made her to love Korean culture more and being able to use ‘Gochugaru’ to prepare Korean food made her more excited.

“I want to say a big thank you to KCCN for coming up with such initiative in Nigeria that had exposed us to their culture for good. I promised to start preparing Korean food for my family,” she said.

Mrs Patience Berepele has expressed gratitude to God for making it to the third prize winner.

Berepele, who was the winner of the maiden edition in 2024, appreciated KCCN for giving her another opportunity to participate.

The winners of the competition

The Director of KCCN, Mr Kim Changki, said the initiative of Hansik contest is aimed at promoting Korean culture, reason why they invited K-pop dancers and prepared Korean food.

Changki said that the initiative had brought synergy between Nigerians and Koreans in many aspects, especially in their food culture.

He said that the Hansik contest will continue even after his tenure, stressing that the Korean government was aware that Nigerians love their culture.

“We want Nigerians to enjoy Korean culture, the reason we allowed only them to participate in the competition and such will help to create jobs if we decide to have a Korean restaurant in Abuja.
“Over 40 teams participated, but 12 teams with two teams that have teammates were able to reach the final round of the competition,” he said.

Ms Yunjin Lee, Event Manager of KCCN, said the event was the second edition of Hansik contest in Nigeria and was organised in collaboration with institutions like Korean Food Promotion Institute (KFPI).

Lee added that KCCN coming up with K-pop in this Hansik contest was to ensure a remarkable event that Nigerians could enjoy alongside the Korean food like Ramyun, Dakgangjeong, Japchae among others.

“In this year’s contest, the participants are competing with the theme of ‘Jang’, which is the UNESCO related cultural, and the Jang Korean dishes were prepared by the contestants.

“Korean food is not only with a good main dish, but we also eat together with a good side dish. Our winner, as well as other contestants did a good job in the competition.

“The Jang taste of the winner was really authentic, not only satisfying for the Korean people, it also satisfied the judges who comprised of the Korean Ambassador, KCCN director, embassy chef and Nigerian chef that agreed with Olabelurin’s winning,” he said.

Chef Godfrey Odoh, Vice President of Association of Professional Chefs Nigeria (APCN), who was one of the judges, commended KCCN for the expansion and advancement of the competition.

According to him, the competition focused basically on ‘Jang’, which is a very vital foundational recipe in the life of the Korean team.

“Our major focus was on the applications and the usage of the ‘Jang’, which is significant to the Korean because there is no dish you make in Korea without jang for the sake of pleasantness.

“So, the focus was the Jang and the test must complement the Jang as a recipe,” he said.

The highlight of the competition was a performance by ‘Jumparewa’ K-pop dancers that comprised of seven ecstatic dancers who thrilled K-pop lovers with their unique dance styles.

The event also witnessed Korean spicy challenge, Korean food concentrate (names of Korean food), as well as “Chopsticks” game challenge where players competed to pick up objects with chopsticks. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
