Two Boko Haram commanders, Ibrahim Muhammed and Auwal Muhammed, alias “Wanka”, surrendered to troops of Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Monguno, Borno on Monday.

The MNJTF is a combined multinational formation comprising military units from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria.

It is headquartered in N’Djamena and it is mandated to bring an end to Boko Haram insurgency.

Chief of Military Public Information of the MNJTF, Lt.-Col. Abubakar Abdullahi, stated on Tuesday that the two insurgents escaped from the Kwalaram/Bakura Buduma camps after fighting for more than a decade.

He added that the former Boko Haram commanders caved in as a result of intensified kinetic and non-kinetic operations targeting terrorist groups within Sector 3 of the MNJTF.

Abdullahi stated also that during investigation, the two Muhammeds admitted to their long-standing affiliation with the Bakura Buduma camp where they had fought for 15 years in Kwalaram, in Marte, Borno.

“The recovery of various items from the surrendering terrorists underscores the significance of this development.

“Items recovered from Ibrahim Muhammed were two AK-47 rifles, three AK-47 magazines, 90 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, two magazine carriers and one mobile phone set.

“From Auwal Mohammed, we recovered five magazines, 101 rounds of 7.62millimeter special ammunition, one X-mobile phone, two hand grenades and one X hand-held radio,” Abdullahi stated. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Minister of the Federal Capital (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has sought for huge investments from Indian investors, as part of strategies to fast tract the development of the capital territory, Abuja.

Wike made the call when the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Shri Balasubramanian, visited him in Abuja on Tuesday.

He acknowledged the presence of many Indian companies in the country, particularly petrochemicals and fertiliser companies among others.

“We would also like to have this kind of relationship in Abuja.

“You have seen improvement in security; you have seen improvement in infrastructure in Abuja. That is part of the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

“We will discuss other areas that will be of mutual interest between India and Nigeria, and Abuja in particular,” he said.

The minister said that it was within the purview of the FCT Administration to ensure that all Embassies in Nigeria, have an unhostile environment to enable them perform their assignments.

Earlier, Balasubramanian said that the excellent relationship between India and Nigeria was quite old.

He said that companies ranged from plastics to steel, oil, and pharmaceuticals among others in every sector.

According to him, Indian companies are the second largest employer of labour after the Nigerian government.

“So that is the level of engagement that we have, including wonderful political relationships.

“We are very happy with all the facilities that are being extended to our Embassy.

“We are more than happy about it and would like to continue the relationship”. (NAN)

NGE decries growing insecurity in Nigeria

NGE decries growing insecurity in Nigeria

By Ekemini Ladejobi

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has urged government at all levels to step up efforts at addressing growing insecurity across the country, in line with their constitutional responsibility of securing life and property.

This was contained in a communique signed by NGE President Eze Anaba and the General Secretary Iyobosa Uwugiaren, after its Standing Committee Meeting held in Enugu.

Observing a slide in the security situation in the country, the professional body of editors and media executives, however, acknowledged efforts by government to reverse the troubling trend.

The body acknowledged the recent release of students of LEA Primary School/Government Secondary School in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as a good development.

The Guild congratulated the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and security agencies for their roles in securing the release of the students, after three weeks in kidnappers’ captivity.

The Guild also called on the federal government to speak out on the whereabout of the Editor of FirstNews Newspaper, Segun Olatunji, who was abducted from his Lagos home by some men in military uniform.

The editors also demanded for the immediate release of the editor, contending that any publication by the media, if believed or suspected to be false, should be interrogated and tested through the legal process.

They condemned the way the editor was abducted, saying that such action had no place in a democracy, especially under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government.

The editors contended that the administration had consistently promised to be guided by the rule of law in all its actions, policies and programmes.

“The media/journalists must be allowed to continue to operate in an atmosphere conducive for the performance of their constitutional duty of holding government accountable to the people.

“Government or security agencies must not be perceived to be doing anything to the contrary or attempting to stifle the media under a democratic government,” the NGE warned.

The Guild described the recent ambush and killing of 17 military personnel on March 14 in Okuama community, in Delta, as disheartening.

It called on the federal government to dig deep into the killing of soldiers in Okuama and unravel the circumstances in which the incident and its aftermath occurred.

While noting the rising cost of living in the country which saw Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increase from 29.90 per cent in January to 31.70 per cent in February, the editors attributed the current harsh economic space to the worsening security situation.

They also attribute the rising cost of living to removal of subsidy on petrol and the devaluation of the Naira, following the unifying of exchange rates.

“The Guild observed measures by the Central Bank of Nigeria to reverse the falling value of the Naira and urged it to ensure the results are long-term and not temporary.

“The professional body also acknowledged initiatives by government at various levels to reduce the hardship in the country – through various palliatives and intervention schemes.

“Such measures should not be beneficial only in the short-term; government policies, in the long run, should make life easier for the people.”

The Guild commended the mass media for their resilience amidst the harsh economic realities of the times and called on journalists to continue to perform their responsibilities with a sense of professionalism.

“In the face of the nation’s security challenges and tough economic ecosystem, the Guild urged journalists to be circumspect and not sacrifice truthfulness in their reportage.

“The media must continue to carry out its responsibilities with a sense of nationalism and be careful not to inadvertently give stimulus to terrorists/bandits in their reportage,” the editors added. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

The ITTF official stated that the federation was committed towards providing facilities and scholarship awards to talented cadet players in the country.

Mr Victor Okhai, Founder, International Film and Broadcast Academy (IFBA), has urged youths in the country to learn skills to achieve self-sustainability.

He said this would reduce the unemployment rate among the youth and develop the national economy as well as enhance self-reliance among them.

Okhai said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on the sideline of the conclusion of a five-day training of 100 up-and-coming photographers on the art of photography.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was held at the Academy Centre, in Surulere area of Lagos State.

He explained that the training would enhance skills of the participants and also help in filling the void of inadequate skills acquisition amongst the youth.

“We are training 100 photographers on the techniques of photography, as this is part of our mandate to offer free training to over 20 million people around the continent.

“Skills acquisition is very important as it plugs different holes and ensures that people can explore and use their skills set to use.

“We have been doing this type of training over the years and we are committed to ensuring that we empower the masses through these means and give people the platform to enhance and put their skills into use,” he said.

Okhia, who is also the President of Director Guild of Nigeria (DGN), revealed that the participants of the training were selected from faith-based organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations and advert placement of Facebook.

He said that 2000 people in each state would be empowered before the half of the year, adding that collaborations with the Federal Government and NGOs will aid in spreading the outreach.

“We plan to spread the outreach to other parts of state as that is part of our mandate. So, collaboration with the government and its agencies would help us do more.

“We remain committed to ensuring that we play our part in ensuring that we impact the lives of the people through empowerment programme as this,” he said.

One of the participants, Mr Michael Adeyinka, who is a person with disability, applauded the training noting that it would help him develop a new skill.

Adeyinka, who is a Disc Jockey by profession, said,“I’m very glad I was able to do this training as I was always interested in enhancing my skills in photography, so, this was a great opportunity for me.”

Abaji Yahaja, an actress and movie producer, said the training would help in improving her photography skills as she has always known the basics about it. (NAN)

Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), says the institution will continue to partner public and private organisations to achieve its set goals.

Adeyemo said this during a news conference on Monday in Lagos to mark his one year in office.

“On assumption, l was faced with three major tasks of completion of projects by the last management, which I was a member for eight years.

“Pursuing my own vision as highlighted in my strategic plans, and pursuing the vision of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMOH&SW).

“The FMOH&SW has developed a four point agenda to drive the objectives of this administration. The key vision behind the 4-point agenda of the Ministry was that of President Tinubu,’’ he said.

He read the agenda as improving quality of governance and leadership of hospital, regulatory capacity of agencies under the ministry, improving population health outcomes, promoting medical industrialisation and improving health security/investment in public health.

Adeyemo said that the present administration of LUTH under his leadership would continue to partner the leadership of the FMOH&SW and contribute its own quota toward achieving the laudable four- point agenda.

“The multi-million-naira NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre is the single largest Cancer Centre in West Africa, and has provided care to over 11,000 patients since 2019 when it was commissioned.

“Thereby, saving the country millions in foreign exchange that would have been expended on medical tourism. The Centre has 3 Linear Accelerators, a CT Simulator, Brachytherapy machine, and a Chemotherapy suite (containing 14 Chemotherapy chairs).

“LUTH is now a go-to Hospital for Cancer Management in West Africa and is even attracting clients from abroad.

“For comprehensive cancer care, Federal Government has also committed to building a state-of- the-art Nuclear Medicine Centre at the hospital, the first of its kind in a Public Hospital in Nigeria,” he said.

He assured the public of the institution’s commitment to providing qualitative and affordable healthcare to Nigerians.

He said that the institution was committed to the policies and programmes of the Federal Government and its parent ministry, targeted at reviving and upgrading the healthcare sector.

“The federal government has also made funds available to LUTH to upgrade endoscopic surgical services, urology and gastroenterology.

“Endoscopic procedure otherwise not possible a few years ago, are now being carried out in LUTH. Other hospitals now refer patients who require video-bronchoscopy to LUTH,’’ he said.

Adeyemo said that last month, LUTH became the first public tertiary hospital in Nigeria to perform Thoracoscopic primary repair of Oesophageal Fistula.

He said that this was a case of minimal access surgery performed on a 13-day-old baby, made possible with the increased funding by the federal government, commitment of the ministry of health and management of LUTH. (NAN)

Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun says his agenda is always designed to meet the needs and aspirations of the masses in the state.

Adeleke said this when the management team of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) led by its Managing Director, Malam Ali Muhammad Ali, visited him at the Government House in Osogbo.

The governor said that his administration was building a legacy for present and future generations.

”Our government is running a horse race in the field of good governance.

“From day one, we created a people-focused agenda designed to meet the needs and aspirations of our people.

“Our government developed niche areas from digital economy to climate action plan.

”We target upgrade of our infrastructure, from flyover bridges to road dualisation, from rural roads to urban roads.

“We are rehabilitating all our health infrastructure while our schools are being upgraded in terms of structures and learning facilities,” he said.

Adeleke also said that his administration would continue to maintain strong partnership with the media.

”Ours is a media-friendly regime. We lay emphasis on regular and detailed communication with the public and other stakeholders.

”I have a very strong media team that markets the truth about the huge successes our government is recording.

“It is our honour and privilege to host the top management of NAN at the Government House.

“It is a significant meeting between Osun State Government and one of the most powerful news agencies in the world, ” he said.

In his remarks, Ali commended the governor for making the people of the state the focal point of his administration.

He said that the prompt payment of workers’ salaries and pension by the governor was commendable.

”More importantly, because government is about the people, I can see that the people have become the focal point of your administration. How? By prompt payment of salaries.

”When you pay salaries, you are improving the local GDP, the local economy and for that you really deserve accolades, you deserve commendation.

”Every salary earner has dependants and by that prompt payment of salaries and pension, you are actually empowering the people.

“Most governors are scared of paying pension, especially huge inherited pension.

”We congratulate you for that and the infrastructure development.

“The amazing thing is how you are doing what you are doing with limited resources, ” he said.

He commended the governor for the peace and tranquility in the state, describing Osun as one of the most peaceful states in the South West Zone.

“In a way, Osun like they say, is the cradle of civilisation, so it is homecoming for me.

”I may have come from the North, but I have this deep kinship with the people of Osun state and indeed the whole of South West, having grown part of my career in the South West,”he said.(NAN)

WaterAid, partners, inaugurate female WASH facility in Bwari school

WaterAid, partners, inaugurate female WASH facility in Bwari school

WaterAid Nigeria in collaboration with its partners on Friday inaugurated a female Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) facility at LEA Primary School, Tudun-fulani, Bwari Area Council, Abuja.

The Country Director, WaterAid, Ms. Evelyn Mere, speaking on the project, said the event was in commemoration of the 2024 World Water Day.

This year’s theme is ‘Water for Peace.’

She said the organisation, with its donor and partners, have successfully constructed and rehabilitated five new water facilities in Dakwa, Barangoni, Zuma II, Sabon-Gari and Tudun-fulani communities.

Mere said the intervention was in continuous efforts toward strengthening systems and building necessary partnership to transform the lives of the poor and marginalised people in the communities.

This, she added, was by expanding an improved access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

She said: “WaterAid has also supported Bwari Area Council to develop a WASH investment plan which, if implemented, will contribute to comprehensive planning towards accelerating access to safe water for residents.

“So much more needs to be done to accelerate access to safe water for millions who live without this essential resource.

“First, we need to rethink approaches through system strengthening, policy formulation, implementation of investment plans through budgetary allocation and releases.

“We also need to improve on financing for water, strengthening platforms for WASH, creation of LGA WASH departments for area councils, among other critical measures.

“The gaps must be closed urgently if we must achieve the SDGs by 2030 in Bwari, FCT and across Nigeria,” she said.

Mere said that the project was carried out in partnership with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days and FCT Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA).

Other collaborators, she said, included Cummins and Bwari Area Council administration.

Mr Ali Dan-Hassan, Executive Director, RUWASSA, said that the inaugurated facility, which had access to water supply, a toilet, bathroom and changing room, was designed to cater for female pupils in the school.

He also added that the old school toilet, which was also renovated and given uplift by the partners, would cater for the male pupils in the school.

He urged the school management and the community at large, to take ownership and responsibility of the facility and ensure sustainability and proper maintenance of the structure.

The chairman of the council, Mr John Gabaya, represented by the council Secretary, Mr Eli Kadanya, commended the stakeholders involved in delivering the project.

He said that the council would do all in its power to provide necessary mechanisms needed to sustain the edifice, while also assuring of the council’s relentless support to partners with notable interventions.

Aisha Babangida, one of the pupils, expressed excitement over the new structure, adding that everyone in the school was happy about the project because it would address open defecation.

She also said that the development would bring behavioural change and discipline among the pupils.

“Before now, we go outside to either urinate or defecate anywhere around the school premises because the other facility was too small and cannot cater for everyone.

“Now, we have this one that looks conducive for just girls, we have no reason to urinate outside or in the open again.

“We appreciate it and may God bless everyone who participated in delivering this project to us,” Babangida said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that WaterAid Nigeria and its partners embarked on projects in Bwari communities in 2023, aimed strategically to deploy WASH initiatives in communities.

The organisation had successfully provided access to safe water for residents of five communities in the council, while reaching more than 3,500 people with hygiene behaviour change messages.

NAN also reports that the event was attended by the community chiefs and leaders, council staff and Heads of Departments, teachers and pupils of the school, among several others. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
