Sen. Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security has warned commodity traders against hoarding and speculative trading as the Federal Government intensify efforts to scale up food production in the country.

The minister stated this on Sunday in Abuja at a special Ramadan lecture/Iftar organised by the SA to the President on Agriculture and Food Security, Mufutau Yinusa and the Asiwaju Project Beyond 2023, an NGO.

The lecture had as its theme “Gratitude, Patience and Vision: Embracing challenges with Optimism”.

The minister who decried the increasing cost of food items, said that apart from insecurity that has affected agricultural production, the issue of hoarding has exacerbated the problem.

“Some of the problems we are facing is also man made, hoarding for instance and speculative trade by commodity traders is also very huge.

“We have seen and discovered some ware houses in big commodity areas where even gates are removed and walls built just to hoard food stuffs inside.

“So when you look at those things and say it’s Bola Tinubu, I think we are not being fair to the administration of this government.

“So we have to look inward, we all have a role to play,” he said.

Kyari said the Federal Government would continue to work round the clock to ensure to food security for the nation, while addressing the insecurity challenge frontally.

Earlier, Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security urged Muslims to use the Ramadan period to pray for the nation and it’s leaders.

“Almighty Allah has urged us, if we want his help and want him to change our pain, our situation, we must also change our ways.

“We don’t have any country than Nigeria and President Ahmed Tinubu has said it times without number, he is here to make a difference and he wants everybody to support him,” Abdullahi said.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to address the economic challenges facing the nation.

Sheik Muhammad Kabir, Imam of Abuja National Mosque in his lecture admonished Muslims to shun corruption, while contributing positively to nation building.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to continue to pray and support the current administration in addressing the myriad of problems confronting the country.

The SA to the President on Agriculture and Food Security, Mufutau Yinusa said the lecture was part of efforts to support the current administration and reach out to the grassroots.

The Director General, Asiwaju Project Beyond 2023, an NGO, Realwan Okpanachi expressed optimism that Nigeria will soon surmount it’s challenges with the experience of President Bola Tinubu.

NAN reports that the lecture/Iftar (breaking of fast) was attended by Islamic scholars, politicians and Muslims from all walks of life. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

No fewer than 500 prospective retirees will benefit from skill acquisition training and strategic knowledge on retirement planning, at the forthcoming 2024 National Pre-retirement Summit in Abuja.

Dr Eugenia Ndukwe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), XEM Consultants Limited, a subsidiary of XEM Group, sponsors of the summit, said seasoned investment advisors would be on ground to guide participants in any retirement planning and investment they might choose.

Ndukwe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday that apart from investment advisors, reputable entrepreneurs and other experts would be at the summit to guide prospective retirees on their retirement plans as the country’s economy was unpredictable.

She said that the government, private, public and corporate sectors, financial institutions, labour unions, pension fund administrators and civil society organisations would also participate.

“The National Pre-retirement Summit is a pioneering and strategic initiative dedicated to addressing the challenges and the prospects prevalent at retirement in Nigeria.’’

Ndukwe said that the primary purpose of the summit was to meticulously examine the retirement policies in the country; the challenges and anxieties that prospective retirees face, and then propose policy directions.

“The summit will also provide a platform to sensitise and empower prospective retirees with retirement income generation strategies with expert guidance.

“The expert’s guidance may be in entrepreneurship, investment advisory, agriculture and agro-allied industry, export and import investment.

“It can also be in financing, real estate investment portfolio, the manufacturing industry, risk mitigation and management, healthcare and so on.

“But more importantly, these experts will help guide employees who have five years or less, into ventures they have passion for, and that will help them spend their retirement years in ease.’’

According to her, the maiden two-day summit will involve stakeholders across the labour value chain including employees who have up to five years or less to retire.

“XEM Group is the main sponsor of this event and this is because of our passion for the welfare of retirees who have contributed immensely to the economic development of this nation.

“Many retirees indeed face various challenges at retirement, but there are also many opportunities available to them, especially with the skills and experience they have gathered in their career; and this is what we want to guide them on.

“So, the summit will provide an inclusive and veritable platform for stakeholders to discuss and engage on a retirement policy direction that promotes the interest of retirees and empowers them with the right tools and resources to thrive during their post retirement.

“The summit will provide participants with a deeper understanding of retirement challenges and opportunities; it will equip them with the knowledge, tools, resources and networks needed to plan for a sustainable and productive retirement.

“The core mission of the summit is to enhance retirement security, foster financial sustainability and boost the overall well-being of retirees in Nigeria,” she said.

Ndukwe said that there would be technical sessions to equip participants with both the soft and hard skills they needed for a fulfilling life at retirement. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

An NGO, HEIR Women Hub, has called for gender equality in access to business funding and investment to address challenges faced by female entrepreneurs in Nigeria.

Añuli Aniebo, the Executive Director of HEIR Women Hub, made the call in Abuja.

Aniebo said a survey conducted by the NGO and was funded by the African Women Development Fund under the Economic Justice theme, exposed disparities faced by Nigeria female entrepreneurs in accessing loans and investments.

“The survey’s findings provide compelling evidence for the need to reevaluate the approach of financial institutions towards investments in female-led enterprises.

“With feedback gathered from 10 financial institutions in Nigeria, we possess a robust foundation for initiating dialogue with stakeholders.

“We are committed to convening discussions based on our findings and holding participating institutions accountable to ensure improved outcomes for women and their SMEs.”

According to her, the survey findings showed that: “Only 4 per cent of female CEOs receive funding compared to 95 per cent of male CEOs.

“Social norms, cultural expectations, and biases contribute to limited access to investments for women.

“Women-owned businesses face challenges such as risk aversion, collateral requirements, and high-interest rates.

“Despite lower default rates among female business owners, they still encounter barriers in accessing fair and equitable loan approval processes.”

Aniebo, explained that in response to the findings, the organisation would launch strategic initiatives to support female entrepreneurs.

She said such initiatives include: policy advocacy, capacity building, partnerships, technology integration to bridge the gap in accessing funds for female entrepreneurs.

“We envision a future where women-owned businesses thrive, empowered by equitable access to funding and support.

“Through collaborative efforts and targeted interventions, we aim to advance economic inclusion and empowerment for female entrepreneurs in Nigeria,” she said.

She, therefore, urged stakeholders, including the World Bank, Central Bank of Nigeria, African Development Bank, and the Ministry of Finance, to rally behind initiatives aimed at promoting gender equality in business funding and investment.

HEIR Women Hub is an NGO dedicated to driving impactful social change, particularly in supporting young women and girls to attain leadership positions and decision-making roles. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Mental health: New York conference to focus on black communities—Official

Mental health: New York conference to focus on black communities—Official

By Franca Ofili

The 2024 edition of Created Unique Mental Health Conference will focus on increasing incidents of mental health problems among Nigerians and black communities across the world.

Mr Onche Odeh, Communications Lead for the event, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said mental health experts and stakeholders would converge on Westchester, New York, for the conference scheduled for May.

He said that the conference would address some of the established mental health problems that the black community faced, especially those that had emigrated from Africa.

“The conference will feature plenaries and networking sessions during which various categories of experts, including mental health practitioners in different specialties, government representatives and healthcare workers.

“Others are religious leaders, and stakeholders in the U.S. and other parts of the world will engage in rich interactions, share experiences, and partake in a workshop for healthcare workers.

“The conference is filled with practical valuable tips for recognising and successfully addressing mental health issues among various groups of people,” he said.

Mrs Ify Ezinwa, Convener, said the conference would focus at some of the mental health issues faced by Nigerians who had migrated to U.S. and other countries in what had become famed as the ‘Japa’ syndrome.

Ezinwa, also the Founder of Echoes Africa Initiatives, an NGO, said that ‘Japa’, as emigration had come to be known in Nigeria, provided many facets of opportunities and problems.

“What you get from your host country depends on how mentally prepared you are.

“Unfortunately, most people who migrate just want to leave, a reason most of them go into mental health crisis once they are hit by unforeseen situations that give contrary impression from their pre-conceived expectations.’’

Ezinwa quoted the World Health Organisation as saying that “There is no health without mental health.

“The global mental health crisis is a major issue facing the world today.

“This is evident in the staggering numbers of those affected in available data.

“Mental illness affects an estimated 950 million people worldwide and is the leading cause of disability across all age groups.’’

According to her, mental health issues have become the leading cause of suicide, accounting for over 800,000 deaths per year.

“Minority groups, particularly black people across the globe are more vulnerable and short-changed because they are a diverse group from different cultures, beliefs, traditions, and practices not understood by the majority of mental health specialists.

“Most current mental health education and awareness campaigns do not consider the diversity of the minority groups hence, no significant impacts are made.

“This informed the conceptualisation of the conference which will kick start our mental health awareness campaign and intervention on how to get succour,” Ezinwa said.

She said that mental health experts  agreed that awareness, education and access to effective interventions and treatment were the only way to go in stemming the tide and helping those suffering from mental health.

Experts that will speak at the event include Dr Sosunmola Shoyinka, President, Association of Nigerian Psychiatrists in the U.S.

Shoyinka is also the Chief Medical Officer at Philadelphia’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disability Services and Founder of CURITAN Foundation.

Others are Dr Ted Iheanacho, U.S.-based Clinical Psychiatrist and Associate professor at Yale University School of Medicine and Dr Allen  Miller, Clinical Psychologist, Director of Training and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) Programmes.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Bread no longer affordable, FCT residents lament

Bread no longer affordable, FCT residents lament

By Okeoghene Akubuike

With the continuous increase in the price of bread, many residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) say they are struggling to keep up with the cost of the staple food.

The residents, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, pleaded for the government’s intervention.

They expressed concern that bread is slowly becoming a luxury item rather than a basic necessity.

The latest National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Food Price Report for February  2024, said the average price of 500g sliced bread increased by 89.48 per cent on a year-on-year basis from  N553.03 recorded in February 2023 to N1,047.86 in February 2024.

While the report said on a month-on-month basis, 500g sliced bread increased by 15.91 per cent from  N904.02 recorded in January 2024.

Mr Sumaila Yusuf, a civil servant, said it had become difficult to buy bread because of the increase in price .

“ It has been tough buying and consuming bread these days.

“As a matter of fact, bread is now treated on the list of special foods that we go for occasionally and it is no longer a routine item that must be on the shelf at all times.

“Sometimes I ponder on why I should keep consuming bread with an almost daily increase in the prices of loaves.

“I can recall that this time last year, I was buying Imperial Bread for N800 but it was sold for N1400 about a month ago when I last bought it.

“Also, Delight Bread small loaf was N600 but it is now  N1, 200. I can go on and on. The government really needs to intervene and help regulate the price,” he said.

Mrs Biodun Ajakaiye,  a businesswoman, said the increase in the price of bread had led to a reduction in its consumption in her house.

“I used to buy two family loaves for my family of six and we used to eat bread twice a week but with the increase we now eat bread once a month.

“The last bread I bought was N1, 700.  So two loaves for my family will be N3400. How can we spend that amount on only bread twice a week?

“We just had to advise ourselves and replace eating bread with Akamu and  Akara,” she said.

Mrs Ella Anyanwu,  a civil servant, said the increase in bread price had affected her family’s consumption of it.

Anyanwu also said in spite of the increase, the quantity and quality of some bread had reduced and she called on the government to intervene.

“The price of bread increases geometrically and the quality and quantity also reduce daily. Some are not properly baked due to the high cost of baking items hence they spoil easily.

“A loaf of bread that was being sold between N950 to N1,000 early this year, increased to N1,300 then to N1,600 currently making affordability very difficult because one needs to buy like three loaves to meet the needs of my family.

“If bread that is a common food for a common man can be so expensive, how can Nigerians survive in this harsh economic situation?

“Therefore, the government should endeavor to look into the cause of its increasing cost as well as other food items and intervene to cushion the effect,” she said.

A trader, Musa Ahmed,  said he still ate bread but went for the smaller sizes because of the price increase.

According to him, I used to buy a loaf of N500 bread but it is now N1,000, so I  now buy the  N400 loaf which used to be N300, and manage myself.

Peace Samuel, a manager of one of the big bakeries in Abuja, attributed the increasing cost of bread to several factors, including the Ukraine war, foreign exchange increase, and inflation in the country.

“ Two to three months ago, our  900g family loaf was supplied to distributors at a rate of N930, while it was sold to final consumers at N1,100.

“But presently, the same loaf is supplied to distributors at N1,100 and sold to final consumers at N1,300.

“Similarly, the 1,200g Jumbo loaf that was sold to final consumers at N1,200 is now being sold for N1,600.”

Samuel, however, said in spite of the drop in dollar, the cost of raw materials such as flour and others used to make bread was still on the rise.

“As of March 22, the price of flour has witnessed another increase of between N1,500 to N2,000, depending on the brand.

“This continuous surge in prices has led to many bakeries shutting down.”

She also said that suppliers sometimes create artificial scarcity and increase prices, knowing that customers have no choice but to buy.

According to her, this is harming the bakery business, and many people are losing their jobs.

Samuel recalled how the government’s intervention helped with the reduction in prices of flour when the Master Bakers Association went on a nationwide strike in February.

“When we went on the strike, the government intervened to an extent and the price of 50kg flour was reduced immediately from  N55,000 to N50,000.

“However, the price has gone up again, ranging from N53,500 to N57,000, depending on the brand.

“The government needs to understand that the continuous rise in the cost of bread is creating a ripple effect that is affecting the entire economy, therefore, the government really needs to intervene,” she said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

How Ecobarter is transforming waste to wealth in Nigerian households

By Aisha Gambo
Over the years, Nigeria had practiced poor waste management which posed a threat to the environment and public health of the nation.

According to the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy, Nigeria falls among the 30 countries with the worst waste management practice out of 180 countries in the world.

Nigeria generates 32 million metric tonnes of waste annually among which 2.5 million tonnes is plastic waste. With an annual growth rate of 2.4 per cent, waste generation in Nigeria will increase in subsequent years.

Nigeria falls among 30 countries with the worst waste management practices

Interventions for waste management

In 2022, the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), signed a US$2.8million agreement to support government efforts to develop sustainable plastic waste management.

In spite of government and other development partners intervention, many household in Nigeria do not have access to formal waste management system which means they mostly use informal channels.

These informal channels consist of collecting waste and dumping them in rivers or burning them which causes water pollution, climate change and disease outbreak.

To address poor waste management in Nigerian households, Ecobarter, a social enterprise begun collecting waste from households in Abuja, Lagos and Ogun states, transforming those waste into new valuable resources.

Founded by Rita Idehai in 2018, the organisation’s vision and mission is to bring sustainability to all people and planet and transform how households consume and manage waste from now till 2020 respectively.

Idehai said that waste such as plastic bottles, cartons, aluminium cans, electronics, metals, nylon bags, pure water sachets, old books and newspapers were collected, sorted and sold to companies that use such waste as raw materials.

Rita Idehai, Ecobarter founder

“We are taking waste away from the environment, we are keeping the environment clean, that means we are improving public health and we are creating jobs.

“We are also making sure the environment is clean while improving the beauty and the value of properties. So that’s another economic advantage for proper waste management,” she said.

From trash to cash

Apart from keeping the environment clean, improving public health and creating jobs, Ecobarter also create wealth for individuals by giving back points and money in exchange for waste.

“We have integrated platforms, the digital side and the offline side where people request for pickup of their waste at their convenience.

“We collect this waste and in return for giving us their waste we give them points which they get to redeem as cash into their bank accounts.

“They can use it to shop with different partners and services on our market place or even donate to different charity organizations that we work with”, Ecobarter founder said.

Ecobarter staff, picking up waste from household

She explained that points were awarded base on the weight of waste retrieved, adding that 30 plastic bottles weighs 1kg which is equivalent to one ecobarter point.

She added that one ecobarter point was worth N20 while people with 50 ecobarter points would earn N1000.

Ecobarter Beneficiaries

Rebecca Bulus is a full time cleaner who learned about waste collection when she realised the extent to which the littered waste in her community was making.

She said she started picking up bottles and other recyclable in her neighborhood, adding that she had collected 200kg of waste and has earned more than N10,000 from ecobarter.

“I mostly use the money I get to buy food ingredients to cook for my children.

“But there was a time when my child was ill and we had to buy some drugs at the pharmacy. I didn’t have much on me because I have not received my salary yet.

“I only had the money i saved from collecting the bottles and that was what I used to pay for the drugs ” she said.

Similarly, Mrs Lucy, a pharmacist said she usually plant flowers in used plastic bottles but the bottles piled up overtime occupying space in her home.

She added that the situation changed when he learned about Ecobarter as they came to pick up her waste in exchange for points which metamorphosed to cash.

“I checked my app and I had like 500 recycling points, I was like wow that’s a lot.

“I decided to try to exchange it with cash just to see if I would get the money; so I filled in my request on the app and forget about it.

“It was on the next day that I got the credit alert, and I was like, where is this coming from? then I saw that it was from ecobarter,” she said.

Challenges

“Low level of awareness on how poor waste management practices impact not just the environment but even public health is a major challenge ” Idehai said.

She stated that the organisation spent alot in terms of energy, time and money to educate people on proper waste management and it’s importance.

Transformative power of Lagos-Calabar Coastal superhighway

Transformative power of Lagos-Calabar Coastal superhighway

597 total views today

By Temitope Ajayi
Barely a month after the Federal Executive Council approved the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal superhighway, the contractor has moved to site to build what will be a monumental civil engineering project that Nigeria has ever seen.

Since the construction of the iconic Third Mainland Bridge that stretched over 11 kilometres across the lagoon, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal road will usher in a new era of ambitious road infrastructural development projects in Nigeria.

The Third Mainland Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world, started during the administration of President Shehu Shagari in 1980. It was completed 10 years after, in 1990, by the military administration of President Ibrahim Babangida.

When completed, the 700km long coastal highway will also enter the world record books among iconic coastal routes like the Wild Atlantic Highway in Ireland and the Pacific Coastal Highway in the United States.

The first phase of the new 700km highway that will run through the nine coastal states is the 47.47km section beginning from Victoria Island. It has five lanes on each side of the dual carriage way and a train track in the middle.

The superhighway is being built by Hitech Construction Company. Part of the funding will be sourced by Hitech, the contractors.

Starting from Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island in Lagos, the Coastal road will pass through Lekki Deep Seaport, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa-Ibom States. At a recent press briefing, Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, said the Coastal road would have two spurs that will link up with Northern Nigeria to further integrate the North and South in terms of movement of people, goods and services.

Economic analysts have revealed that the completion of the first phase of the project alone could increase the size of Lagos State economy by 50 per cent because of the connection to Lekki Deep Seaport and the Lekki economic corridor where Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex is situated alongside other multinational industries.

One of the fascinating and interesting features of the coastal road is how it will compress the distance between Lagos and Ondo State.

For instance, the distance from Ibeju-Lekki in Lagos to Araromi in Ondo State is about 50 kilometres along the coast. This distance translates to about an hour journey. From Araromi to Ore, a major connecting hub in Ondo State is about another 50 kilometres, whereas the existing route from Ibeju-Lekki to Ore currently in use by motorists is 150 kilometres.

Speaking on the game-changing effect of the coastal road and how it will transform the economy of Cross River State, the Commissioner of Information, Erasmus Ekpang, in a press statement, said the state government is overwhelmingly grateful to President Bola Tinubu for embarking on the project decades after the necessity for the coastal road had been muted.

The highway, according to the Commissioner, “will serve as a catalyst to transform the economy of Cross River State for optimum impact. I want to applaud President Tinubu for the political will to translate this lofty dream into concrete reality.

“This coastal highway is going to be a game changer for the socio-economic status of Cross River. It is bound to add value to our rich agricultural produce while enhancing the profit base of local farmers. The benefits in the value chain is unimaginable.”

Ekpang further averred that the highway would boost the tourism economy of Cross River.

“When completed, the road will also boost tourism traffic to our unique tourism sites by attracting an unprecedented number of tourists, given the thrills and frills synonymous with road travel.”

Speaking in like manner, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Cross River, Alphonsus Eba, praised President Tinubu for fulfilling a key aspect of his campaign promises to the people of Cross River.

“President Tinubu has once again demonstrated that he is a man of his word by keeping to his promise. When Sen. Ben Ayade voiced out this request during the presidential campaign in Calabar, he knew the economic importance of the road.

“Nothing is more gratifying at the moment than the cheering news of the commencement of the highway. This is a huge boost to the current drive of Gov. Bassey Otu to alter the socio-economic narrative of our state. The highway is bound to ensure our rapid transformation in all facets of economic development by driving traffic of investors and tourists,” the state party Chairman noted.

While many Nigerians are excited that the road project has finally taken off after many years, that the highway is starting now speaks to the capacity of President Tinubu to conceive bold ideas and take on huge and transformational projects. President Tinubu’s penchant for high impact projects preceded his presidency.

As Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007, he superintended over the financial and infrastructural renewal of the state.

Apart from the major road projects his administration in Lagos undertook and completed, he set up Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to modernise public transportation systems in the state through intermodal public transport infrastructure.

The Red and Blue Rail Metro lines that were recently commissioned formed part of the grand vision he laid down for the state. The Lekki Deep Seaport, Lekki Free Trade Zone, and Eko Atlantic City projects are landmark projects that will eternally bear the footprints of President Tinubu as governor of Lagos State for eight years.

Also imminent for implementation is the 4th Mainland Bridge, conceived during the Tinubu era in Lagos.

Indeed, like his many impactful achievements in Lagos, the coastal highway will be one of the many critical transformative economic projects that will hallmark the Tinubu’s presidency.
