The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has emphasised the critical role of physical fitness in enhancing combat readiness and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, AVM Francis Edosa, made this known at the Second Quarter 2026 Armed Forces Route March on Friday in Abuja.
He urged personnel to sustain fitness standards in line with the demands of modern military operations, describing the route march as a vital exercise that promotes discipline, teamwork and endurance among troops.
The CDS said the exercise was not just a ceremonial activity but a key component of military preparedness, especially as troops continue to operate in complex and dynamic security environments across the country.
“A fit soldier is a capable soldier, and a fit force is a capable force. So, you must take personal responsibility for maintaining high levels of physical fitness.
Oluyede commended commanders and heads of departments for mobilising officers and men for the exercise, noting that such commitment was essential to strengthening the operational efficiency of the armed forces.
He also lauded the Director of Sports and his team for the successful organisation of the event.
The CDS urged troops to remain focused on their constitutional mandate of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria, while consistently meeting the Armed Forces’ fitness standards.
According to him, the route march also serves as a platform to foster unity, professionalism and inter-service cooperation among personnel.
He expressed confidence in the ability of the Armed Forces to build on current efforts and deliver improved results in ongoing operations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the route march is a routine military exercise designed to enhance endurance, combat readiness and cohesion among troops. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
