The President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), Mrs Mutiat Disu, on Monday presented cash grants and food items to some members of the association in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Disu presented the cash grants and food items when she visited the Mobile Police (MOPOL) barrack in Nyanya.
She said that the gesture was part of activities marking the upcoming inaugural annual POWA Convention, adding that the outreach was aimed at supporting members, promoting self-reliance and improving the welfare of police families.
She also said the intervention was designed to empower beneficiaries to strengthen their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
She urged the benefiting members to make prudent use of the support to ensure that their businesses become sustainable rather than depending on repeated assistance.
“I am using this opportunity to tell you that there is no free lunch every year. Don’t think it is your right to expect that whenever POWA comes, it is your turn to receive.
“Use these items and cash support diligently to grow your businesses so that you will no longer need assistance, thereby creating opportunities for other members to benefit,” she said.
The POWA president further said that details of the beneficiaries had been documented to ensure transparency, fairness, and an orderly selection process for future interventions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the association for the gesture, describing it as unprecedented and commending the president’s commitment to the welfare of members.
They noted that the association had also provided relief materials and cash support to widows during an earlier outreach held at the POWA National Secretariat.
Particularly one of the beneficiaries, Mrs Mercy Danladi, a widow whose husband died in active service in 2025, thanked the POWA president for her continued support to widows and families of fallen police officers.
“She invited us on Widows’ Day and gave us many gifts that made us very happy. We are grateful for everything she has been doing for us,” she said.
NAN reports that the outreach forms part of activities lined up for the association’s upcoming inaugural annual POWA convention scheduled for July 16 to 18.
NAN further reports that Disu was accompanied on the visit by other national executive members of the association.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
