Mr Gbenga Abiola, immediate past Vice Chairman of Agege LGA of Lagos State, on Sunday declared his intention to contest Agege Constituency I seat in the 2027 elections.
Abiola, also a former Sole Administrator of the council, said he had been groomed to succeed Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, if the six-term lawmaker decides not to recontest.
Declaring in Dopemu, he described Obasa as his benefactor and pledged to run only if the Speaker steps aside in 2027.
“It pleases me to announce I want to represent Agege Constituency I and continue the sterling performances of our leader, Obasa.
“Obasa has a loyal and trustworthy son in me to replace him if he decides not to run again.
“I know if not for God and Obasa, I would not be here. If he does not run, I am ready for the assignment.
“This gathering shows the people’s love. The turnout is enormous and I am honoured by the support.
“Our leader should be assured I will deliver. APC remains the party to win,” Abiola said.
He promised not to disappoint constituents and to sustain developmental strides recorded under Obasa’s representation.
“I have been trained enough to fit into this role. I have the experience and have served as sole administrator.
“I was the youngest council boss, vice chairman and secretary in Lagos. I have made impact, hence this support.
“I feel the people’s pain and have supported many through my foundation. The result is evident here today.
“I believe I have been trained well and will not disappoint. This turnout shows the people’s approval,” Abiola added.
He commended Obasa for projects in Agege and cautioned against violence ahead of APC primaries.
He said: “I do not believe in do-or-die politics. If chosen, I will represent you well.
“Assembly or not, I will continue to support residents through my foundation and initiatives,” Abiola said.
He urged supporters to remain loyal to Obasa and follow party directives for the 2027 elections.
Abiola, National Coordinator of Tinubu Media Force, praised President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, describing them as repositioning the country.
Dr Jamiu Ademosu, Director-General, Agbelebu Solidarity Forum, said the turnout reflected trust and confidence in Abiola’s leadership and grassroots appeal.
“What we see is respect for a man who has served Agege with dedication and integrity.
“The presence of youths, elderly and persons with disabilities shows wide acceptance,” Ademosu added.
He said Abiola’s declaration responded to calls for higher service and promised continuity of development.
“Abiola has what it takes to represent the people effectively,” Ademosu said.
Party leaders, including Akeem Arisekola, Treasurer, APC ward B, praised Abiola’s humility and urged support for his ambition. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
