Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says the National Association of Seadogs’ new secretariat will deepen humanitarian service, strengthen charitable initiatives and broaden social advocacy across communities.
Soyinka spoke during the foundation-laying ceremony at the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday, attended by association members, business leaders and invited guests.
He said the facility would “serve humanity and address misconceptions”, noting it would also provide a permanent base for coordinating outreach, education and advocacy programmes.
Soyinka urged members to uphold the association’s ideals, adding that discipline, integrity and service must remain central to all activities undertaken in its name.
“Your work already speaks for itself,” Soyinka said, commending the association’s consistent engagement in humanitarian interventions and public enlightenment campaigns nationwide.
He praised the chamber, describing it as “a leading institution in economic development and private sector representation” with a strong record of supporting enterprise growth.
ACCI President, Chief Emeka Obegolu, welcomed Soyinka and members, applauding their contributions through humanitarian services, advocacy and sustained public enlightenment initiatives.
Obegolu highlighted key interventions, including medical outreach programmes, charity drives, environmental sanitation campaigns and promotion of human rights, social justice and good governance.
He said the association’s activities had “improved community welfare, raised awareness and encouraged responsible citizenship and national development” in many underserved communities.
According to him, such efforts complement government programmes while fostering civic responsibility and inclusive participation in national development processes.
Obegolu urged members to strengthen collaboration with the chamber, describing it as “the voice of the private sector with over 16 sectoral groups”.
He noted that stronger partnerships would enhance impact, create opportunities for joint programmes and expand the reach of both institutions’ initiatives.
Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, ACCI First Deputy President and association leader, lauded Obegolu for his instrumental role in securing space for the secretariat.
Adesugba said the development would provide stability for the association’s operations and support long-term planning, coordination and expansion of its humanitarian programmes.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the association presented Obegolu with a plaque recognising his leadership and commitment to humanistic ideals and institutional growth.
Adesugba also presented his book, ‘Ideas Don’t Die’ describing it as a reflection on innovation, resilience and the enduring power of transformative ideas.
The visit ended with a guided tour of the ACCI Business Entrepreneurship Skills and Technology Centre, led by Obegolu and Adesugba, showcasing training and innovation facilities.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
