TICAD9: Tinubu hails Armed forces for successes in fight against insurgency

‎TICAD

‎By Muhyideen Jimoh

‎President Bola Tinubu has praised the Nigerian Armed Forces for their success in fighting insurgency and criminality, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity through stronger governance and economic reforms.

‎Speaking at the Peace and Stability plenary of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), Tinubu highlighted the critical role of national stability in development.

‎This is contained in a statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday, in Yokohama, Japan.

‎‎Tinubu described the armed forces’ growing momentum as a foundation for long-term development, while emphasising Nigeria’s strength in inclusivity, diversity, and the rule of law.

‎Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in his opening remarks underscored the need for mutual understanding, local solutions, and global collaboration for Africa’s growth.

‎‎He unveiled Japan’s priority areas: private sector-led sustainable development, youth and women empowerment, and regional integration across the continent.

‎Ishiba announced a new economic partnership with the African Development Bank to deliver up to $5.5 billion, using JICA’s private sector investment finance as a springboard.

‎Tinubu also noted ongoing investment in infrastructure, institutional reform, and partnerships with civil society and global allies as crucial to uplifting Nigerians’ quality of life.

‎”Nigeria’s brave armed forces can win any number of battles, but we do justice to their heroism only when we, as government, are courageous in tackling not just terror, but also the underlying causes,” the President said.

‎Tinubu stressed that peace and stability are essential to Africa’s development, warning that many conflicts still persist despite isolated progress.‎

‎He cited recent peace agreements in the Congo as a sign that new mediation approaches, tied to economic opportunities, can succeed.

‎”We should be under no illusions about the scale of our task. But neither should we underestimate the successes we have had. In the past, competition for resources has weakened states and triggered conflict.”

‎”Now, we see mediators directly linking outcomes to investment in Congo. It is working and underlines the need for fresh thinking in everything we do to deliver peace and stability.”

‎”Nigeria understands this process well. We believe inclusivity and diversity under the rule of law are our strengths. We have argued for this vision, and we have fought for it. We are still fighting for it today.”

‎”We have learned that our brave armed forces can win many battles. But we can do justice to their heroism and sacrifice only when we, as governments, display the courage to be tough, not only on terror, but on the causes of terror.”

‎The president called for a shift from foreign aid dependency to market-driven cooperation and meaningful global partnerships.

‎He also urged Japan to support long-overdue reforms in the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to amplify Africa’s voice.

‎”It is the view of Nigeria that Africa’s quest for fair and equitable representation in the UN Security Council is a just and fair demand.”

‎”Indeed, Africa deserves two seats in the Permanent Category, with all its prerogatives and privileges, including the Right of Veto. Africa also deserves additional seats in the non–permanent seat category of the Security Council, as encapsulated in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.”

‎Tinubu highlighted the potential of information and technology as tools for global trust, urging international cooperation to harness tech for peace, not division.

‎Prime Minister Ishiba during plenary reiterated the importance of locally-rooted development strategies shaped through mutual understanding and co-creation.

‎”Japan is providing various cooperation and support for Africa. But first of all, Japan needs to know more about Africa.”

‎”So, in creating solutions together, this co-creation at the TICAD 9, we focus on three important areas: private sector-led sustainable growth, Youth and Women, and Regional integration and connectivity within and beyond Africa.”

‎He appealed for Africa’s support as Japan faces a population crisis and shrinking agricultural land, threatening future growth.

‎”In 75 years from now, the population of Japan would have been halved. In the local communities, the population continues to decline; this is one big challenge Japan is facing. All agricultural land is being reduced, another major challenge for Japan.”

‎‎He praised Africa’s demographic advantage and urged the continent to harness it through industrialisation and job creation.

‎”There is another potential in Africa; there is so much growing young population in Africa, but for the power of young people in Africa to flourish, you need to create a manufacturing industry and create employment, and that, I believe, is very important.” (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Analyst lauds Wike’s security interventions in FCT

By Philip Yatai

Akinloye Oyeniyi, an Abuja-based public affairs analyst, has commended the Minister for Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, for boosting security in the nation’s capital.

Oyeniyi, who is also a legislative consultant, gave the commendation in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, as a reaction to the ongoing clearance of shanties and criminal hideouts in the federal capital

The commendation comes amidst the minister’s response to growing concerns about safety and security in Abuja, especially with the increasing need for secure environments for residents, businesses, and visitors.

According to the analyst, the minister was not only rejigging the infrastructural aspect of Abuja and its environs, but has now moved to securing lives and properties.

“The move by Wike is a welcome development in the quest for improved security in the capital.

“Operations by the FCTA involved the latest removal of illicit structures, impounding vehicles, and seizing weapons in a bid to curb criminal activities and enhance safety in the nation’s capital.

“Honestly, this recent commitment to improving the FCT security is what everyone should commend the Minister and his team for.

“Yes, it is their job, but there is what is called commendation if an official has performed his duty well.”

He argued that such efforts had not been heard in the FCT in a long while, “thus, the reason every reasonable person should commend the Wike-led FCT Administration’s actions to improve public safety”.

Oyeniyi called for the sustainability of such efforts to ensure that the federal capital remained safe and secure for residents’ well-being and sustainable development. (NAN)

Tinubu hails Afreximbank’s impact on Africa

Tinubu hails Afreximbank’s impact on Africa

Impact

By Vivian Ihechu

President Bola Tinubu has praised the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for its vital role in driving economic development and integration across the African continent.

He particularly commended the bank’s “audacious leadership” and its “generational impacts” on Africa’s economic future.

Speaking at the 32nd Afreximbank Annual Meetings 2025 (AAM2025) in Abuja, Tinubu applauded the bank’s achievements and Nigeria’s commitment to strategic partnerships.

He praised Afreximbank’s growth under Professor Benedict Oramah, describing its expansion as impressive and impactful.

“Afreximbank under Oramah’s enhanced leadership has grown its assets to over $27 billion within a commendable timeframe,” Tinubu noted.

He said the bank had championed Africa’s pandemic response, industrialisation, free trade, and the creative economy over the past decade.

Tinubu highlighted the bank’s founding 33 years ago as Africa’s decision to take control of its development destiny.

“Today, with over $250 billion in trade and development, including $150 billion in the past decade, the bank is a pillar of African growth,” he stated.

He said Nigeria, as Africa’s most populous nation, had greatly benefited from the bank’s wide-ranging support.

“Nigeria has proudly received over $52 billion in support for energy, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, manufacturing, and the creative sector,” he said.

Flagship projects cited include Dangote Refineries, the African Medical Centre of Excellence, and the African Quality Assurance Centre.

“These projects reflect confidence in Nigeria’s future and in Africa’s broader potential,” the President declared.

Tinubu also applauded the collaboration that saw Nigeria formally approve the African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS).

“Thank you for that,” he said, stressing that PAPSS enabled cross-border trade in local currencies and supported economic stability.

He urged other African nations to embrace PAPSS, calling it a tool for financial integration and collective resilience.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Tinubu conferred the GCFR honour on Professor Oramah after the speech.

He spoke of reforms under his ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ introduced since May 2023, including removing the fuel subsidy.

Another reform was the unification of Nigeria’s exchange rate system to correct systemic distortions.

“These reforms, though difficult, were essential for correcting long-standing imbalances,” he emphasised.

He outlined positive outcomes from the reforms, saying they lay the foundation for future growth.

“In 2024, Nigeria recorded 3 per cent GDP growth with broad sector contributions,” he stated.

Oil production rose to 1.5 million barrels, with a 2.5 million target in sight, backed by strategic investments.

“Inflation is easing, data is stabilising, and investor confidence is returning,” Tinubu added.

He stressed that reforms must also be measured by their human impact, not numbers alone.

“True transformation lies in empowered citizens and thriving businesses,” he said.

He highlighted social investment areas, including student loans and upgrades to 8,800 primary health centres.

“These upgrades focus on maternity care and diagnostics, especially in underserved communities,” he explained.

Tinubu also cited digital inclusion initiatives, such as deploying thousands of fibre-optic cables to bridge connectivity gaps.

He noted that infrastructure progress includes the completion of 279 roads, with more ongoing.

He said Nigeria’s collaboration with Africa is growing in scale and ambition, reflecting shared development goals.

He highlighted the launch of the African Energy Bank in Abuja with $5 million initial capital.

This bank aims to finance Africa’s energy transition using gas, renewables, and clean technologies.

Tinubu said Nigeria’s fertiliser sector is expanding to 7.5 million tonnes annually to secure Africa’s food needs.

He urged African countries to build stronger institutions and capabilities amid global fragmentation and rising protectionism.

He said Afreximbank must remain bold, adaptable, and grounded in African realities to succeed.

“This is a time to reflect on our resilience and boldly commit to Africa’s future,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

FRSC lauds FMC Abuja for taking action against alleged negligent staff members

Response

By Ibironke Ariyo

The Federal Road Safety Corps,(FRSC), has commended the management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jabi, Abuja for taking decisive action against staff alleged to have neglected an accident victim.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed said this in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, (CPEO), Olusegun Ogungbemide on Tuesday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the victim had been rescued from a crash scene within the nation’s capital by a good Samaritan and was taken to FMC Abuja for proper treatment.

Mohammed emphasised the imperatives of timely and adequate medical attention in reducing mortality rates and improving outcomes for crash victims.

He called on all healthcare providers to adopt a more proactive approach in responding to emergencies and saving lives of rescued crash victims.

He also condemned the several rejection of crash victims from FRSC operatives by hospitals.

He revealed that the National Road Traffic Regulations (2024) specifically frowns at hospitals that reject crash victims.

This, he said was with detailed provision of adequate punishment for negligence, or any form of misconduct that compromised established regulations on handling of crash victims.

“We urge healthcare providers to prioritise welfare of crash victims and uphold the highest standards of professionalism to save their lives,”he maintained.

The FRSC boss reiterated the Corps’ commitment to collaborate with healthcare providers and other stakeholders to enhance road safety and save lives.

“By working together, we can reduce incidences of crashes fatalities to the barest minimum, and improve response to emergencies,”he added.

The corps marshal commended the good Nigerian who single handedly carried out the rescue of the victim.

Mohammed called on citizens to emulate the sense of patriotism by promoting a culture of safety, discipline, and professionalism to make a difference and save more lives.

NAN reports that the FMC management said eight of its staff members—including four doctors, two nurses, and two attendants—are currently under investigation for alleged professional negligence.

The hospital management told newsmen that any staff member found guilty of dereliction of duty would be held accountable.

The hospital’s Head of Clinical Services, Bioku Muftau, confirmed that the accident victims allegedly abandoned by hospital personnel—featured in a viral video circulating on social media—have been treated and discharged.

Muftau said the patient with a head injury, who appeared in the video and drew widespread public concern, was stabilised and discharged the same day he arrived at the facility.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Etsu Kwali commends FCT minister for efforts in improving security

Security

By Veronica Dariya

The Etsu of Kwali, Mr Luka Nizassan III, has commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his efforts in stabilising security within the FCT and its surrounding areas.

Nizassan made the remarks in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said the improvement in security, especially in his community, was due to the collaborative efforts between the FCT administration and local community vigilance.

Nizassan said that this partnership had been instrumental in addressing issues like kidnapping and other security threats in the area.

“Before his assumption as Minister of the FCT, some of the communities here were major flashpoints for kidnapping and other crimes.

“The FCT Minister’s collaboration with the community has helped us address these challenges effectively,” Nizassan said.

He also acknowledged the minister’s support, noting that resources, including operational vehicles, had been deployed to aid local vigilantes.

Since his enthronement in May 2024, Nizassan emphasised that he had taken steps to maintain security and tackle theft and burglary in the area.

He explained that one such measure include discussions with scavengers about their role in criminal activities, such as purchasing stolen goods or participating in theft.

In addition, Nizassan said that intelligence officers had been integrated into known criminal hideouts, providing crucial information to security agencies.

“If there is actionable intelligence, it will definitely help address the issue of crime prevention and response,” he said.

He also mentioned that criminal hotspots such as Pai-junction, Mamu, Yangoji, Gada-biyu, and Kwaita were identified as areas frequented by kidnappers’ informants, who often disguise themselves as petty traders.

Nizassan affirmed that his ongoing collaboration with security agencies had significantly reduced kidnapping activities in the region.

He stressed on the importance of continued efforts to ensure the security of life and property in the community.(NAN)
