The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has called for increased commitment and action from Nigerian women towards inclusive governance, economic participation, and national development.

She made the call at a One-Day Women’s Town Hall Meeting and Citizens Engagement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Speaking under the theme “Accelerating Women’s Voices in National Development”, Sulaiman-Ibrahim urged women to take ownership of their roles in society and work collectively to achieve meaningful change.

“The reason why we are here is because we want what is best for ourselves, for the Nigerian women, for our community, for our families.”

The Minister underscored the importance of the proposed special reserve seats bill at the National Assembly, which aims to ensure fair representation of women in governance.

She highlighted how women must be strategic, united and forward-thinking in their pursuit of political and economic empowerment.

“We are the voting strength of this country; we and our children.

“That gives us the permission to negotiate for anything because we will stick to our words, we have to be masters in negotiating.

“We have to strengthen our mechanisms. We have to mentor ourselves. Days are gone when five women come out for one seat and split the votes.”

Mrs Hauwa Ibrahim, wife of the Ona of Abaji and President of the FCT Traditional Rulers Wives Association, praised the collaborative and inclusive tone of the engagement, emphasising the importance of women working together to create sustainable change.

“She does not just talk about policies, she invites others to be part of the solution. When you collaborate, it doesn’t go to waste.

“She encourages women to come into policy-making spaces, not just for show but to really impact government decisions and activities.”

She noted that the Minister’s efforts resonate with traditional institutions and women leaders across the country, stating that collaboration and shared responsibility are key to progress.

Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, expressed optimism about the progress made under the current administration and the opportunities ahead for women in the Federal Capital Territory.

“Standing here today as the pioneer Mandate Secretary for FCT, I want to begin by echoing the Minister’s call to action. Every woman has an important role to play, and it is clear that we all have work to do.

“For some time we operated quietly behind the scenes, but now is the time to take bold actions and show results.”

Benjamins-Laniyi commended the minister’s leadership and inspiring vision that encourages all women to unite and work toward shared goals.

Mrs Ruth Agbo, President of the Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture (AWITA), commended the resilience and determination of Nigerian women, stating that they are poised to drive agricultural productivity and trade growth.

She, however, emphasised the need for equipment and support to enable women to fully realise this potential.

“In the coming years, Nigeria will have surplus because the women are ready to go to the farm and the traders are ready to trade. The women are ready to farm and make good input to the country.

“We are only pleading that we need equipment that will make us work.

“We are calling on stakeholders to provide the necessary tools and resources to enable women to fully contribute to national development.”

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, Dr Maryam Keshinro, said the engagement has shown a firm resolve and dedication by women in the country to take their destinies in their hands.

Keshinro said that the ideas and commitments discussed would translate into concrete actions, propelling Nigerian women to new heights of influence and impact.(NAN)

Nigeria has taken a significant step toward becoming a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the launch of a National AI Strategy, Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister, Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, says.

Tijani made this known at the launch of the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Collective Industry (NAICI) in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said that the launch aimed at harnessing the power of AI to drive economic growth and development.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the AI Collective is a community of practice charged with supporting strategy development, and ensuring ethics and safety are central to the advancement of AI in Nigeria.

Tijani said: “The National AI Strategy was developed through a collaborative process involving government, academia, and industry.

“Nigeria’s approach to AI strategy development is unique and has garnered international recognition.

“The country’s model involves identifying and engaging with Nigerian researchers and experts in AI, both locally and internationally, to develop a comprehensive strategy that addresses the nation’s specific needs and challenges.”

According to him, the government has taken concrete steps to support AI development, including funding research projects and establishing partnerships with private sector companies.

“With its innovative approach and commitment to AI development, Nigeria is positioning itself as a hub for AI in West Africa.

“The country’s strategic location, large population, and growing economy make it an attractive destination for AI investment and innovation.

“Nigeria’s AI strategy will serve as a model for other African countries and contribute to the continent’s economic development,’’ he said.

Tijani emphasised the importance of building a community of practice around AI and encouraging collaboration between industry, academia, and government.

He, however, stressed that the country was not talking enough about the power that it had or could produce when everyone comes together to do things.

He said that there was no country in Africa where this sort of thing was happening today, adding that Nigeria was still, however, slightly behind.

The minister noted that everyone could see the sort of acceleration that Nigeria was leading, adding that if all continued on this path and truly understood what was happening today, then all would see that the future was bright.

“So, the challenge that we have is that AI is going to exacerbate the gaps and differences between nations when it comes to productivity,’’ he said.

He urged all stakeholders to work together to achieve the country’s AI ambitions and ensure that the benefits of the technology was shared by all.

“As the country moves forward with its AI strategy, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential benefits, including increased productivity, improved competitiveness, and enhanced economic growth.

“However, they also acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead, including the need for significant investment in infrastructure,” he noted.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Data Science Nigeria (DSN), Dr Olubayo Akanmbi, outlined the key areas of focus for the AI Collective.

Akanmbi said that the AI collective included research and development, sector-specific innovation, policy advocacy, and international collaboration.

He said that the AI Collective would provide a platform for industry players to work together to create innovative solutions, mobilise support for young startups, and create sectoral networks to drive domain-specific use cases.

According to him, the initiative will also focus on policy advocacy, and ensure that AI is used in an ethical and responsible manner.

Akanmbi emphasised the importance of international collaboration, noting that the AI Collective would tap into global centres of excellence to power the work being done in Nigeria.

He also announced the launch of the Diaspora Connect, a platform that would enable Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to the development of AI in the country.

“The AI Collective will also provide a platform for sectoral networks to drive AI adoption and sector transformation.

“Industry stakeholders are encouraged to volunteer as champions in various sectors, including telecoms, creative economy, real estate, government, health, agriculture, financial inclusion, and fintech,” the DSN CEO said.

He expressed optimism that the AI Collective would drive impact and transform various sectors of the economy, and encouraged all stakeholders to get involved and support the initiative.

Officially opening NAICI, the Dean of Information Systems, Lagos Business School, Dr Olayinka David-West, highlighted key aspects of Nigeria’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy.

David-West emphasised the need for a framework that would guide the country’s approach to AI development.

She said that Nigeria’s AI strategy was focused on leveraging technical innovation, local talent, and strategic collaboration to drive sustainability and economic growth.

According to her, the strategy is built around five key pillars: infrastructure development, building a world-class AI ecosystem, AI adoption across sectors, responsible AI development, and a robust government framework.

The dean emphasised the importance of using AI to drive economic growth, improve educational and healthcare outcomes, and enhance the standard of living for Nigerians.

David-West also highlighted the need for AI adoption in various sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, finance, healthcare, education, and public sector governance.

She said that the strategy was bold and audacious, with 12 goals and 34 initiatives aimed at achieving economic growth, social development, and technological advancement.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, on Thursday called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to empower young women and advance national development.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim made the call in Abuja at the opening ceremony of a three-day royal ambassadors gathering week 2025 with the theme, “Building Global Partnership for sustainable impacts, Innovations and development.”

The minister, who was represented by a  Director in the Ministry , Dr Mrs Ola Erinfolami, emphasised that empowering young women remained critical to the nation’s growth and progress.

She acknowledged the ministry’s achievements in promoting gender equality, development and peace, noting that more work must be done to close existing gaps.

“Young women continue to face challenges in education, economic opportunities, healthcare and leadership.

“It is our responsibility to address these disparities and create an enabling environment for women to thrive,” she said.

The minister, however, outlined four key areas of focus in the ministry’s agenda to include access to quality education and skills training, supporting entrepreneurship and job creation.

This, she also said, includes ensuring healthcare access, promoting well-being and encouraging women’s participation in leadership and decision-making.

She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to promoting policies and programmes that empowered young women, adding that collaboration with stakeholders remained vital.

“I urge all stakeholders to join us in this effort. Let’s work together to empower more young women and create a brighter future for our nation,” she added.

In his opening remarks, the Founder and Director-General of the Royal Ambassadors Family Enlightenment Foundation (RAFEF), Jonathan Okwudiri, called for stronger global partnerships to drive sustainable development and innovation in Nigeria.

Okwudiri, who doubled as the convener of the event stressed that unity, collaboration and collective action were crucial in achieving national progress.

He said that in a world where challenges like poverty, unemployment, food insecurity and social inequality threatened the collective future, the need for action had never been greater.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the RAFEF, Green Revolution Farmers Feed the Nation Foundation (GRFFNF), and Young Women Rise Empowerment Initiative (YWREI) are the three NGOs working to reshape the society.

These are done through strategic empowerment, economic development and social transformation.

The groups are also dedicated to poverty eradication (SDG 1), quality education (SDG 4), gender equality (SDG 5), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), and zero hunger (SDG 2).

Okwudiri, who oversees a network of over one million women and youths across the 36 states and the FCT, said that the NGO was a formidable force dedicated to nation-building through empowerment, agriculture, and youth development.

He announced the launch of major initiatives under the GRFFNF, including Operation Feed the Nation, inaugurated in December 2024, and the Green Rewards Smart Farm Settlement (GRSFS), aimed at providing employment opportunities for one million Nigerians.

He said that the group’s Agricultural Farming Project Fund and Empowerment Scheme would provide financial grants to farmers to promote sustainable agricultural practices.

“This gathering is a testament to the power of collaboration. As Royal Ambassadors, we are determined to work with visionary partners to create lasting impacts,” he said.

Okwudiri also highlighted the achievements of the RAFEF in training over 1,000 women and youths in entrepreneurial skills, seeking partnerships and support to enable the trainees to start their businesses.

He reiterated the organisation’s readiness to align with President Bola Tinubu’s administration policy, particularly the Renewed Hope Agenda, which focused on promoting agricultural development, food security, and job creation.

“As nation-builders, we support any leader who prioritises the empowerment of women and youth. Together, we can shape the future of our country,” Okwudiri said.

Okwudiri commended the Board of Trustees, management teams, and the media for their contributions to the growth of the organisations and urged participants to use the gathering to connect, learn, and collaborate.

“We are not just here to celebrate; we are here to build. Let us rise to the challenge and create the future we envision,” he said.

The event also features the inauguration of the National and State Executive Officers of the Young Women Rise Empowerment and Support Initiative (YWRESI) and the crowning of Miss Global Royalty Africa 2025.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

The Concerned Northern Youth Stakeholders have appealed to the Federal Government to appoint a Minister of State for Youth Development from Northern Nigeria.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the group’s Coordinator, Usman Doshiro, in Abuja.

He stated that such an appointment would facilitate the seamless execution of policies targeted at youth across all geopolitical zones, thereby fulfilling the administration’s promises ahead of 2027.

“Nigeria’s youth are diverse, and ensuring equitable leadership across regions will foster national unity and inclusiveness in youth policies.

“Given the enormous responsibility of the Ministry, appointing a Minister of State from the North will complement the efforts of Hon. Olawande and help in reaching more youth, especially in rural areas,” Doshiro said.

He further stated that the youth constituency remains the strongest pillar of support, adding that the appointment would inspire and mobilise young Nigerians towards national development, unity, and progress.

Doshiro reiterated the President’s commitment to youth empowerment and national transformation, stating that young people eagerly anticipate this strategic decision.

This, he added would reinforce the Renewed Hope Agenda and keep Nigeria’s youth actively engaged in nation-building.

“We are particularly grateful for the energetic and result-driven approach of the Minister of Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande.

“Under his leadership, we have seen a renewed focus on youth inclusivity, skills development, entrepreneurship, and leadership opportunities.

“However, to further strengthen the Ministry of Youth Development and ensure greater regional balance, deeper grassroots engagement, and expanded impact, we humbly appeal for the appointment of a Minister of State for Youth Development from Northern Nigeria,” he said. (NAN)

We Don’t Need Sanusi’s Stamp of Approval For Our Laudable Policies- Minister

We Don’t Need Sanusi’s Stamp of Approval For Our Laudable Policies- Minister

The Federal Government notes the recent remarks by His Highness, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, regarding the economic reforms introduced under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, at a public event in Lagos.

We note the emir’s acknowledgement of the noble initiatives which, he said, he could explain away but for his decision “not to help the government”.

First, we acknowledge that Sanusi, and indeed any Nigerian, has the inalienable right to express opinion either in form of commendation or criticism on how the government is being ran.

However, we find it amusing that a leader, more so one from an institution that ennobles forthrightness, fairness, and justice would publicly admit to shuffling off saying the truth because of personal interest hinged on imaginary antagonism.

It is pertinent to state that Nigeria is at a pivotal juncture where bold and decisive actions are necessary to tackle entrenched economic challenges.

This administration has implemented transformative reforms not because they are easy, but because they are essential for securing Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth, as Emir Sanusi had consistently advocated.

The temporary pains currently experienced from these inevitable decisions, as Sanusi himself acknowledged, are “necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management” more than anything else.

These reforms are already delivering measurable progress. The unification of exchange rates has bolstered investor confidence, which has contributed to increased foreign reserves and strengthened Nigeria’s ability to shield itself from external economic shocks.

The removal of the fuel subsidy has freed up significant resources, allowing for greater investment in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Projections from respected institutions, including the World Bank, show an upward trajectory in Nigeria’s GDP, signaling that our economy is firmly on the path to recovery.

Additionally, by addressing inefficiencies, the country has reduced its debt service-to-revenue ratio, creating a more sustainable fiscal framework for future generations.

It is deeply disappointing that reforms widely recognized as essential by global experts—including by Emir Sanusi II himself—are now being subtly condemned by him because of shift in loyalty.

His Highness, given his background in economics, has a unique responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms aimed at collective progress because he feel estranged from his “friends” in government.

We urge the Emir to rise above personal interests and partisan undertones and prioritize the greater good of Nigerians.

Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. As a government, we urge esteemed leaders to refrain from rhetorics that undermine public trust.

Instead they owe it a duty to champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria. This is a critical time for our country, what is needed is collaboration, not unnecessary distractions.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains resolute in its mission to lead Nigeria towards economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.

The challenges we face demand courage and collective effort, not divisive narratives.

This administration is open to constructive dialogue with all well-meaning stakeholders, while remaining steadfast in putting the interests of Nigerians above all else.

Let history record this moment as a turning point—when leaders and citizens alike choose to prioritize the nation’s destiny over personal gain.

Together, we will deliver on the promise of renewed hope and a better Nigeria for all.
