The Director-General of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Chukwuemeka Woke, has cautioned youths in the Niger Delta against the dangers of oil spillages to human health, the environment, and the region’s aquatic resources.

He gave the warning when he received a delegation from the Niger Delta Progressive Youth Leadership Foundation (ND-PYLF) in his office on Thursday in Abuja.

Woke said that most oil spillages in the region were caused by third-party activities such as pipeline vandalism and illegal bunkering, stressing that such actions not only damage the environment but also endanger lives.

“The consequences of oil spillages are enormous. Beyond environmental degradation, they result in serious health hazards and the near extinction of aquatic life, making it increasingly difficult for communities to access fresh fish and other sources of livelihood from the rivers,” he said.

The DG emphasised that NOSDRA, as a government regulatory agency, was committed to ensuring that oil companies responsible for spillages are held accountable and made to pay damages.

He thanked the youth leaders for their visit and expressed optimism for stronger collaboration with the foundation.

He also urged them to intensify efforts in sensitising communities about the dangers of pipeline vandalisation and illegal bunkering, which, he said, remain major contributors to oil spill incidents in the region.

In his remarks, Chief Adam Mambo, President of ND-PYLF, commended NOSDRA for its critical role in safeguarding the environment from oil spills and other hydrocarbon-related pollution.

He explained that the purpose of the visit was to strengthen ties with the agency and support its mandate.

According to him, the Foundation, established on Sept. 13, serves as a grassroots platform uniting Niger Delta ethnic nationalists across nine states of the region, as well as parts of the South-West and South-East geopolitical zones.

He said that the body focuses on addressing issues such as environmental degradation, oil spills, community crises, and the activities of oil companies in the region.(NAN)

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) says it will continue to partner relevant stakeholders toward addressing oil spills in the country.

NOSDRA Director-General, Chukwuemeka Woke, disclosed on Monday in Abuja when he met with a delegation of the Green Clean Innovation Hub, led its Chief Executive, Mr Promise Amaha.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the occasion is the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a joint hosting of an International Oil Spill Summit and Expo.

The summit is expected to serve as a high-level platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among industry players, government agencies, community leaders, and environmental experts.

It will bring together local and international stakeholders to address the environmental, economic, and social impacts of oil spills, as well as to showcase new technologies, policies, and strategies for spill prevention, detection, and response.

Woke said that the partnership with the organisation has been beneficial to NOSDRA and the country as a whole since the collaboration started in 2012.

“This is a very critical conference that will bring together all key stakeholders in our environmental space. We will have operators from the oil and gas industry, host communities, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, security agencies, and the media in attendance.

“This platform will help bridge existing gaps, resolve challenges, and foster better understanding among all parties,” he said.

Woke added that the forthcoming summit was in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritises sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

He noted that the gathering would play a key role in advancing Nigeria’s environmental protection goals by fostering collaboration, promoting innovation, and strengthening the country’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to oil spill incidents.

“If we have a one-stop platform that unites all stakeholders, I believe many of the issues affecting our mandate will be addressed, and all sectors will work together more effectively.

‘’This decision is in the right direction, and I am confident we will achieve what we have set out to do.”

Also speaking, Amaha thanked NOSDRA for the partnership, describing it as a “giant step” in the right direction.

“The Expo will mark the launch of the first-ever Oil Spill Host Communities in Renewed Hope Initiative.

‘’We will also unveil strategic measures to provide a strong platform for greater climate stakeholder engagement, with communities integrated into surveillance, reporting, and capacity building to drive NOSDRA’s mandate on oil spill detection and response,” he said.(NAN)

The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) is collaborating with the European Union in the areas of oil spill response and environmental protection in the country’s oil-producing regions

This followed a bold step toward international partnership following a strategic engagement meeting with the European Union (EU) Delegation, held at the EU office.

The meeting led by the Director General of NOSDRA, Chukwuemeka Woke, focused on forging a strategic alliance with the EU to strengthen the agency’s institutional mandate.

“Priority areas for collaboration discussed during the meeting included the development of a robust environmental impact assessment and remediation framework for artisanal refining sites, the deployment of in-situ oil spill response equipment and tools, and the enhancement of human capacity through structured training and retraining initiatives.

“This partnership is essential to tackling persistent environmental threats particularly the challenges posed by illegal oil bunkering and artisanal refining which have devastated oil-producing communities across Nigeria.

“The main objective of this visit is to seek strategic collaboration with the EU to help escalate the challenges we face, particularly the issues of illegal bunkering and artisanal refineries. With the support of the Nigerian government and the European Union, we believe we can eliminate the suffering of people living in oil spill-impacted areas and attract stronger international commitment to environmental justice,” Woke said.

The NOSDRA DG noted that effective international collaboration would not only bring global attention to the environmental degradation in the Niger Delta and other oil-producing regions, but also drive impactful policy reforms and resource mobilisation needed for long-term remediation and sustainable development.

In response, the Acting Head of Delegation at the EU, Ruben Alba, welcomed the NOSDRA team and praised the agency for taking the initiative to engage with international partners.

He announced that the EU would establish a technical working group to review NOSDRA’s mandate and identify areas where the EU could provide meaningful support.

“We appreciate NOSDRA’s efforts and commitment to environmental protection. As a next step, we will establish a smaller committee to examine the agency’s mandate and determine how best we can contribute to its objectives,” Alba said.

EU officials at the meeting include Temitayo Omole, Programme Manager for Human Development, Tomasz Gawlik, Programme Officer for the Climate, Green and Digital Economy Section and Godfrey Ogbemudia, Programme Manager for Energy and Satellite Initiatives.

On the NOSDRA side, members of the agency’s management team were also present.

A detailed presentation was delivered by NOSDRA staff, outlining the agency’s core functions, the scale of environmental challenges caused by oil spills, and the critical need for technical and policy-based support from the EU to enhance environmental monitoring, emergency response capabilities, and regulatory enforcement.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to sustained dialogue and partnership.(NAN)

Mr Chukwuemeka Woke, the Director-General, National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), has restated the agency’s commitment to curbing oil spillage in the country.

Woke said this on Thursday, during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the agency and F1 Consulting in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the MoU is also aimed at providing oil spill training for members of staff of NOSDRA by F1 Consulting.

Woke, who expressed the agency’s readiness to implement the content of the MoU, said that the outcome would yield positive results that would boost the agency and safeguard oil host communities.

He urged all oil companies and stakeholders to contribute their quota and support the agency to deliver on its mandates.

“NOSDRA is an agency established by the Act of the parliament of Nigeria and we are not in any way going outside our mandate.

“With the establishment and signing of this MoU, we believe that this will go a long way in solving the problem of pollution and oil spillages in our various communities,” he said.

Woke also sought the support and cooperation of other agencies of government and the oil companies that were in the oil host communities to prevent and manage spillage.

He said that stakeholders must be more responsive in relaying information of spillage to NOSDRA and not hoard information from the appropriate authority.

In his remarks, Mr Jude Ndubisi, Lead Consultant of F1 Consulting, said the essence of the MoU was to institutionalise the national oil spill contingency plans directly to host communities.

“The national spill contingencies plan is the primary document that talks about spill response strategies as a country.

“This document for a very long time has not been institutionalised down to the host communities.

“So, we are trying to build a partnership and synergy with NOSDRA to bring the provisions of the national spill contingency plan down to the communities where the oil installations exist,” he said.

According to him, the oil spillage contingencies will train, guide and hold communities and individuals responsible for spillage.

He called for partnership with stakeholders and holders of oil licensing operations to train and create awareness to preserve the community and environment.

Mrs Katherine George, Director of Legal services of NOSDRA, said that the MoU was in line with the mandate of the agency

“We have looked at the establishment Act of the agency and we believe that this MoU is in tandem with the mandate of our agencies

“We believe that this MoU will accomplish the goals and mission of NOSDRA to zero tolerance for oil spillage,” she said. (NAN)
