Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, says the Federal Government is collaborating with the Republic of Germany to enhance electricity supply in the country.

The Minister made this statement while briefing State House Correspondents after a bilateral meeting between President Bola Tinubu and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Wednesday in Abuja.

“The name of the game now is cooperation, collaboration, and partnership.

“The flagship of this bilateral relationship is the Presidential Power Initiative, with Siemens implementing both the Brownfield and Greenfield transmission substations,” Adelabu said.

He added that since the signing of the agreement in Dubai at COP 28 in December 2023, significant progress had been made.

“The pilot phase of the project, which is 80 per cent complete, involves the importation, installation, and commissioning of 10 power transformers and 10 power mobile substations,” he explained.

Adelabu noted that this development had added 750 megawatts to Nigeria’s transmission grid capacity, which had contributed to the relative stability seen in the grid.

“We expect an additional 150 megawatts capacity to be added upon the completion of the entire pilot phase by the end of the year.

“The first phase of the project includes the rehabilitation of 14 existing (brownfield) substations and the establishment of 23 new Greenfield substations across the country,” he said.

Additionally, Adelabu discussed the focus on renewable energy as the way forward for Nigeria.

“We have an energy transition plan aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060. To achieve this, we must collaborate and partner,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of working with countries like Germany, which have the necessary technology.

“We have the sun. Over 30 states in Nigeria experience a minimum of 10 hours of sunshine daily. Germany has the technology.

“We also have wind energy, desert wind up north and coastal wind down south,” Adelabu explained.

He also noted that the new highway from Lagos to Calabar was opening up opportunities for offshore wind energy across the nine coastal states.

Adelabu further highlighted that the new road from Badagry to Sokoto would provide better access to hydroelectric power plants, mentioning that Nigeria has over 300 dams that have not been utilised for hydroelectric power due to poor access.

“Many of these dams will also be opened up,” he added.

He said that the German International Agency for Development was supporting Nigeria’s grid extension and renewable energy initiatives.

He also noted that numerous German companies and private investors were ready to invest in Nigeria’s renewable energy sectors, including solar, wind, and hydro power.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

We’ll handle return of Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso to ECOWAS with wisdom – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu said the interest and welfare of the citizens of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger remained priority for leaders of ECOWAS.

The President said this on Wednesday while receiving Mr Frank–Walter Steinmeier, the President of Germany, in a State Visit on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said that wisdom and diplomacy would make the difference in reintegrating the countries into the commission.

President Tinubu, who is the Chairman of ECOWAS, noted that the leadership of the three countries had been reluctant in bringing out transition programmes with clear dates.

“Our relationship of mutual respect will continue as we reappraise the situation in the three countries. What I can assure you is that we will not give tolerance to unconstitutional government.

“We will continue to lead by example. We have innocent citizens who are victims of the military. We will continue to explore diplomatic channels to navigate without punishing the innocent people.

“We will continue to allow free movement and trade. Though the transition programme is not sure or certain, we will not punish the innocent citizens; they are not in possession of power,” he said.

Tinubu told the German leader that the regional body would leave the door open for the return of democracy in the countries.

“This is what ECOWAS will stand for. Whatever is happening in the countries, we are mindful of the wellbeing of the citizens.

“I don’t want to personalise issues as ECOWAS Chairman. We will leave the door for collaboration,” the President added.

In his response, the German President said the re-integration of the three countries would have significant impact on the economy and security of the West Coast.

“We will talk bilateral and regional issues. We just had a meeting with the President of ECOWAS Commission. We know how important it is to have regional cooperation. We are part of the European Union.

“For Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, there are serious security and economic consequences for not carrying on together. We understand why ECOWAS security members are insisting on diplomacy.

“It is not easy but you will need to use your diplomacy to keep the commission and the region together.

“While you are using diplomatic means to bring Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso to rethink their position, you should have emergency plans in place for future economic cooperation,” the German leader said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

President Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday, assured the German government and businessmen of Nigeria’s preparedness to expand frontiers for investors by removing administrative bottlenecks in the energy and solid minerals sectors.

Tinubu said this at a business session during the State Visit of Mr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the German President, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said activation of the latent potential in the energy sector remained central to Nigeria’s development.

“I welcome Mr President to Nigeria and the State House. Your visit is a significant milestone. And I must thank you for the warm reception when I visited Germany.

“We need each other, and you emphasised this in our private discussion. Nigeria is going through a transformative period and trying to align with the best strategy and practices on good governance globally.

“We like our relationship with you as friends and partners. Germany is well-industrialised and renowned for its sustainable infrastructure,” Tinubu said.

He reassured the German businessmen that Nigeria was ready and open for business.

“As you mentioned, you are ready to support Nigeria in the energy sector, which you have long been doing.

“Also, in alternative energy, we have the sun, and you have the technology. We should continue our partnership in every way that we can,” said the President.

Tinubu said the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Solid Minerals, Power, Industry, Trade and Investment had been directed to work closely with investors to develop the energy sector.

“I will re-emphasise again and again, we must enhance the possibility of becoming highly industrialised by exploring opportunities in our natural resources,” he added.

Tinubu said the country’s reforms had been designed to bring long-term prosperity through sustainable and dependable frameworks.

“We are synchronising to ensure a grounded and flourishing partnership that brings prosperity to our people. We know that Germany has the capacity and is involved in regional cooperation and collaboration.

“We are glad that we are trading in Euro with you. We are more transformative than before. We have made changes in the way we do business. It is now easy in and easy out for investors.

“We are projecting investment in gas and alternative energy. Our transformation involves natural gas.

“We are leveraging solid minerals, particularly lithium. We have a dynamic, anxious-to-learn and flexible youth population.

“We have many Nigerian students who were trained in Germany. We want domestic investment that will promote growth in our economy. Equally, we need skill development,” the President said.

Tinubu noted that Small and Medium Enterprises were also being repositioned to play a more central role in development, assuring that bottlenecks to investments had been removed.

In his remarks, the German President assured Tinubu that there were also more specialised companies in Germany that would be encouraged to look towards Nigeria for expansion opportunities beyond the big brands in the energy sectors.

“There is a growing interest in Nigeria on the German side beyond those who are already here, like Siemens. Other companies are looking for investment opportunities, especially in renewable energy,” he stated.

In his presentation, Mr Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, said Germany had a dedicated one billion Euro fund for diversifying the supply chain in renewable energy, and modifying the conditions could easily accommodate the opportunities in Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.

Alake said the critical minerals for energy transition, cobalt, nickel and lithium, were readily available in Nigeria.

“German companies can come in under the Renewed Hope Agenda that has sanitised the environment, enhanced security with a new architecture around solid minerals, created tax incentives and waivers for important equipment and provided opportunities for joint ventures,” he said.

He said pre-feasibility studies had been concluded, urging German investors to look to Nigeria for diversification of the energy supply chain.

Mr Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment; and Mr Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, also made presentations at the business meeting.

The business delegation from Germany and their Nigerian counterparts commended President Tinubu for his long-term vision for the economy.

They also praised his courageous steps in repositioning Nigeria for greater prosperity by making the economy more globally competitive with streamlined foreign exchange and improved ease of doing business. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
