‎Super Falcons Captain, Rasheedat Ajibade has outlined what Nigeria must do to evolve from continental champions to FIFA Women’s World Cup winners.

‎Ajibade who Spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the team’s reception by President Bola Tinubu at the State House on Monday, said there was need for structural support for the team.

‎NAN reports that the 10-time WAFCON champions have long dominated African football but have struggled to replicate that success on the global stage.

‎Their best World Cup result remain a quarter-final finish.

At the Olympics, they have also failed to break past the last eight.

‎Ajibade, a former Atlético Madrid Femenino star said the team’s recent WAFCON triumph in Morocco proved they can aim higher if given the right backing.

‎She called for urgent investment in facilities, professional conditions, and tournament preparation to elevate the team’s global standing.

‎”We want to be global contenders, not just local champions. We have dominated in Africa and it is time to take it to the world stage.

‎”So, all we need to do is just support and to keep promoting women football and set the platform for generations to come.

‎”When we talk of support, I am talking about proper preparations for tournaments and proper professional conditions for players,” she said.

‎Ajibade said that the warm reception from President Tinubu was a major morale boost that could inspire greater achievements.

‎”Our vision is bold. We want to become the best women’s football team in the world.

‎”We dream of standing at the top of the global stage, not just as competitors, but as champions.”

‎She emphasised the importance of world-class training infrastructure and player welfare to sustain success.

‎”To achieve this, we only seek the continued and enhanced support of the NFF, NSC and the Federal Government.

‎”With your partnership, we can have world-class training facilities, and we will be able to prepare in the best way possible, and create a pathway for the next generation of Super Falcons to score even higher.

‎”Together, we can show the world that Nigeria is not just a participant in global football, but a leader.” Ajibade said.

‎NAN reports that the Super Falcons have featured in every FIFA Women’s World Cup since 1991, reaching the knockout stage on three occasions – 1999 in (U.S.), 2019 in (France) and 2023 (Australia and New Zealand).

‎In their last outing in 2023, they stretched two-time European champions England to a penalty shootout in the second round. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

WAFCON: Nigerians in South Africa celebrate Super Falcons

The Nigerian community in South Africa has hailed the country’s women national team, Super Falcons, for winning the Women’s Africa Cup of Nation’s title.

The Super Falcons came from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco 3-2 to win the title for the 10th time.

The community, under the auspices of the Nigeria Union South Africa (NUSA), said in a statement on Sunday that the team showed the typical Nigerian fighting spirit to win the title.

” The Super Falcons were composed, focused and determined to win the game,” the statement signed by NUSA President, Smart Nwobi, said.

” It is not easy for a team to come from two goals down and win, especially against a home team,” Nwobi, a lawyer, said.

Nwobi also said Nigerians in South Africa were proud of the Super Falcons for accomplishing the Mission X feat.

” We join Nigerians to congratulate the Super Falcons for this feat.

” We also advise that preparations for the defence of the title should commence immediately.

” You will understand that the standard of women football in Africa has improved.

” This implies that opposition will be stronger in future tournaments,” he said.

NUSA also congratulated the Banyana Banyana of South Africa who finished fourth for winning the fair play trophy.(NAN)(www.nanews.ng)

Reigning African best goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, starred as Nigeria’s Super Falcons showcased flair and grit in a 0-0 draw with hosts Portugal on Monday.

The nine-time African champions, aiming for a 10th title, arrived less than 24 hours before kick-off but showed no fatigue, matching the Portuguese stride for stride.

A poor back pass by Christy Ucheibe in the 6th minute allowed Diana Silva a chance, but her effort skewed wide of goal.

Three minutes later, Nnadozie claimed a cross brilliantly before Francisca Ordega’s slick move found Rasheedat Ajibade, whose clever shot almost beat Ines Pereira.

In the 24th minute, Nnadozie made another brilliant save as Portugal pressed, but solid defending ensured Nigeria kept the scoreline goalless.

Just before the break, Ordega was denied by a last-ditch challenge, and Rinsola Babajide’s final pass was overhit, missing a golden scoring chance.

After the interval, Nnadozie made three world-class saves in four minutes, denying Silva, Pinto, and Norton in quick succession.

Substitutes Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh Plumptre and Halimatu Ayinde lifted Nigeria’s tempo, and Ordega’s fine pass in the 64th minute narrowly missed a finish.

The Falcons dominated the final 20 minutes. Ordega hit the crossbar and Onumonu almost beat the goalkeeper after another superb Ordega assist.

Nigeria impressed throughout, leaving Portuguese fans in awe with a disciplined and stylish performance at the Estádio José Gomes.

The team departs Lisbon for Casablanca on Wednesday to face Ghana’s Black Queens in another friendly match on Sunday.

Nigeria’s first Women’s AFCON match will be on Saturday, July 6, against Tunisia in Casablanca. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
