Team Nigeria wins 15th African Women Wrestling Championship

Nigeria wrestling team on Saturday won the 15th African Wrestling Championships after emerging overall winners in the women’s category of the African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria won a total of eight gold and two silver medals out of 10 available medals to clinch the title for a record 15th time.

Nigeria’s duo, Andrew Ebierelayefa, lost to Omar Mohamed of Egypt by pinfall in the 74kg.

In the 65kg, Stephen Akintewe missed out to another Egyptian, Shehabeldin Emam, to settle for silver respectively.

Dideikemei Erefagha beat Elie Djekoundakom of Chad 12-0 in the 70kg, as Solomon Ulabo defeated Madagascar’s Totiana Razafinjato 6-0 by pinfall in the 79kg to win bronze medals.

Also, in the 61kg, Saviour Egoli beat Mustapha Batinini of Tunisia by a technical 5-5 scoreline to secure a bronze medal.

The men ended the tournament as third overall best, resulting in a podium finish.

NAN reports that the team, which comprised 10 female and eight male wrestlers, competed for honours in 18 events.

The 2026 African Wrestling Championships, which started on April 27, ends today in Alexandria, Egypt.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
