The Nigeria Security and Development Forum (NSDF) has backed the de-radicalisation programme under Operation Safe Corridor as vital to sustaining counter-insurgency gains.
General Secretary, Mr Victor Success, stated this while briefing journalists on Tuesday in Abuja.
He said the briefing followed a review of national security strategies and non-kinetic stabilisation approaches.
Success commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, for “balanced leadership” in strengthening kinetic and non-kinetic counter-insurgency efforts.
He also praised the recent graduation of rehabilitated beneficiaries, describing it as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s peacebuilding efforts.
According to him, the outcome underscores the effectiveness of structured deradicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration processes.
He added it shows that sustainable behavioural transformation is achievable through coordinated interventions.
Success acknowledged sustained military operations in degrading terrorist capabilities but noted that force alone cannot ensure lasting peace.
“Rehabilitation and reintegration programmes remain essential components of a comprehensive national security strategy,” he said.
He said they provided pathways for disengagement and reduce the risk of recidivism.
Success noted that Operation Safe Corridor aligned with global best practices combining security operations, psychological support, vocational training and community reintegration.
He outlined benefits including encouraging defections, supporting intelligence gathering, equipping beneficiaries with skills and aiding economic recovery.
He said the initiative reflected Nigeria’s humanitarian and constitutional commitment to justice, especially for those forcibly recruited.
Success noted that countries such as Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Singapore and Pakistan had implemented similar models with measurable success.
He, however, acknowledged public concerns about reintegration, especially among insurgency victims.
He called for enhanced transparency, continuous monitoring and stronger community engagement.
He also urged sustained support for affected communities, stressing that balancing justice, accountability and reconciliation is crucial.
“Supporting rehabilitation initiatives is not a concession but a strategic necessity for long-term national security.
“Operation Safe Corridor is a vital complement to military efforts and a necessary step towards sustainable peace and national recovery,” he said.
Success called on government, civil society, traditional and religious leaders, and citizens to support the initiative.
According to him, long-term security depends on consolidating military gains through inclusive peacebuilding and reintegration efforts.
“Peace is not secured by military success alone, but by rebuilding lives, restoring communities and addressing root causes of conflict,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
