Include peace education in school curricular, NGO advises FG

Child and Youth Protection Foundation (CYPF), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has appealed to the Federal Government to include peace education in the nation’s education curricular.
The National Coordinator of CYPF, Mr Kolawole Olatosimi, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, ahead of the International Day of Education scheduled for Jan. 24.
Olatosimi said the mission to advance peace and development through education had never been more important.
He also said that it was also imperative that all stakeholders work towards creating an environment where peace education was accessible to all students at all levels of education in Nigeria.
“Furthermore, it is important to promote a curriculum that emphasises not only academic learning, but also the development of empathy, critical thinking, and other important skills for peaceful coexistence.
” To truly create a lasting peace, we must not only invest in education, but also ensure that it is effective, equitable, and relevant to the needs of our world,” Olatosimi said.
According to him, education is a powerful tool for creating a more peaceful world because it reduces conflict and violence by promoting understanding and tolerance.
He explained that education also equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to solve problems and find peaceful solutions to conflict.
Olatosimi said education improves economic opportunities and reduces poverty, where both were major contributing factors to violence and conflict.
“Education helps to foster a sense of hope and possibility, which can inspire individuals to work for positive change.
” It is also important to ensure that all people have access to quality education, regardless of their gender, race, socioeconomic status, or geographic location,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
