The Edo Sports Commission on Friday honoured a weightlifting prodigy, Favour Cornelius, with cash rewards following her outstanding performance at the 4th African Youth Games held in Angola in December 2025.
Cornelius, who represented Team Nigeria in the 44kg female weightlifting category, won three gold medals at the continental event.
The athlete contributed significantly to Nigeria’s total haul of eight gold medals.
Her exploits once again placed Edo in the national spotlight as a hub of emerging sporting talents.
At a grand reception organised by the sports commission, its Chairman, Amadin Enabulele, said it was a mark of appreciation for the young athlete’s consistency and excellence on the international stage.
Presenting the cash prizes, Enabulele commended Cornelius and the weightlifting coaching crew for bringing honour to the state and Nigeria, while urging the athlete to remain focused and disciplined.
“This is what we want to see in our sports. Hard work, discipline and excellence are always rewarded.
“You have represented Edo State at the Niger Delta Games, the National Youth Games and now the African Youth Games, returning each time with three gold medals. Keep it up and you will go higher,” Enabulele said.
According to him, the commission will continue to support athletes who demonstrate commitment and deliver results at national and international competitions.
Speaking at the event, an elated Cornelius said she was confident going into the African Youth Games because of the intensive preparation she received from the state coaching crew, led by Ikponmwosa Omoroghomwan.
“I was not afraid to compete with the best in Africa because I was well prepared.
“I am overwhelmed by this reception and the support from the chairman and the management of the Sports Commission.
“This is a huge motivation for me to do more,” she said.
The young champion also expressed gratitude to her coach, describing him as instrumental to her success.
“I ascribe my success in Angola to my coach. He made it possible for me to participate and excel at the African Youth Games,” Cornelius added.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Cornelius enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season, having earlier claimed three gold medals at the maiden Niger Delta Games in Uyo as well as at the National Youth Games. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
