The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has appealed to the media to ensure responsible and positive reporting that promotes peace, development, and national unity during the upcoming FCT Area Council elections.
The National Chairman, PCRC, Alhaji Mogaji Olaniyi, disclosed this during an interactive meeting on security and peaceful FCT Area Council elections in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the elections in the area councils are scheduled to hold on Feb. 21.
“The PCRC will work with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police. The election is going to be free and fair. No form of thuggery will be tolerated as it will be a crime-free election.
Olaniyi said that the meeting was held to sensitise residents on the presence of the PCRC to support police in the territory.
He said that there would be no hiding place for criminals in the FCT and advised residents to desist from all forms of negative vices.
“We will use our instrument of office to fish out criminals because we are the closest to the public. There is no hiding place for any criminal. We will expose them,” he said.
Also, Dr Rufus Ebegba, FCT PCRC Chairman, urged Nigerians, especially FCT residents to support the Federal Government’s security architecture under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“Eligible voters in the FCT are encouraged to participate peacefully in the Feb. 21 FCT Council elections, which will serve as a test run for INEC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Ebegba called for support from the federal government’s security initiatives and urged participation in the upcoming local elections.
He stated that security was highlighted as crucial for economic growth and national development and urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies by sharing information to help sustain peace in communities.
Ebegba urged all political parties and candidates to conduct peaceful and responsible campaigns, respecting the rule of law.
He described the President’s tax reforms and economic recovery agenda as necessary steps toward a stronger, more self-reliant Nigeria.
“Security remains the foundation of economic growth, social stability and national prosperity. Without peace and safety, meaningful development cannot be sustained.
“The current administration has taken deliberate steps to strengthen our security institutions so that Nigeria can become safer for businesses, investors and the ordinary citizens,” Ebegba said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
