Jilin, China, set to welcome the world ahead of the 2027 FISU World University Winter Games

Changchun, China — In northeast China, Jilin Province is building momentum as a winter sports and cultural destination, known for long, stable winters and snow conditions popular with outdoor enthusiasts. The region is especially recognized for its light, dry snow, often compared by winter sports lovers to conditions in the European Alps and North America’s Rocky Mountains—earning Jilin a reputation as a “powder snow” destination. With the 2027 FISU World University Winter Games approaching, Jilin is expanding its winter offering—from ski and ice experiences to youth-focused cultural exchange—positioning the province as a host region where sport, creativity, and international connection meet.
The 2027 Games, to be held in Jilin Province, are expected to bring together university athletes and delegations from around the world, including teams from Spain and Colombia. Alongside competition, Jilin plans a broader program of winter festivals and student activities timed with the Chinese New Year period, giving visiting participants and media an opportunity to experience local traditions as well as the region’s winter lifestyle.

Winter cities that stay active after dark
Jilin’s winter season is increasingly defined by “night-time economy” experiences and youth-oriented outdoor culture. In Changchun, evening ski sessions and social events are becoming a signature part of the winter calendar, turning the slopes into a gathering place for students and young professionals. In cities along the Songhua River, visitors can explore ice-themed attractions, seasonal markets, and warming food and drink experiences—offering a contrast of sub-zero scenery with lively street culture.
Youth exchange and innovation alongside sport
To complement the Games, Jilin is developing a program of student exchanges and hands-on activities designed to connect visiting university students with local communities. One planned initiative, the “Ice and Snow Youth Camp,” aims to combine winter culture with creativity and technology, including workshops that explore how digital tools such as 3D design and printing can be used in ice and snow art.
Together, these programs are intended to broaden the Games experience beyond the venues—creating opportunities for cross-cultural conversation, collaboration, and shared storytelling among young people from different countries.
An invitation to international audiences
With the 2027 FISU World University Winter Games as a catalyst, Jilin is using winter as a platform for urban vitality, tourism development, and global youth engagement. As teams from Spain, Colombia, and other countries prepare to participate, Jilin invites international media, universities, and winter sports communities to discover a region where winter is not only a season, but a stage for sport and cultural exchange.
