A coalition of civil society organisation (CSOs) has stressed the need for public awareness and advocacy that will enhance necessary reforms before the 2027 general elections.

The CSOs, including ActionAid, Movement for the Transformation of Nigeria (MOTION) and Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, stated this at the on-going advocacy on Tuesday in Abuja at the National Assembly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the advocacy was aimed at sustaining the momentum for the passage and effective implementation of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026.

The Country Director, ActionAid, Andrew Mamedu, said that the citizens’ action was to mobilise public awareness and advocacy to ensure that reforms were prioritised before the 2027 general elections.

Mamedu urged the Conference Committee to adopt the House of Representatives’ version of the bill, saying it addressed the will of the people.

“We want the conference committee to adopt the version of the House of Representative which aligns with the will of the people and we will keep coming out until we get what we want.

“Specifically, we will push the peaceful protest across the states of the federation, INEC and other places that control our elections to ensure our votes count.

“All our plans are within the law and we will not go against the law in pushing for our demand,” he said.

Mamedu emphasised that the move was to address glitches in electoral process from polling unit to collation and transmission of election results.

According to him, Nigerians all over the country are demanding for their vote to count

Mr Celestine Odo, Convener, Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, commended members of the House of Representatives for the version of the bill passed by them.

“The House of Representatives’ version has been adopted by the people of Nigeria. These people have, for the first time, shown that they are the people’s representatives,” Odo said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
