FG The Federal Government on Thursday inaugurated four new projects in Kano to boost power supply in the state.
The projects include a 2×40 Mega Volt Ampree (MVA), 132/33 Kilo Volt transmission sub station in Walalambe, 1×300MVA and 1 ×100 MVA, 132/33KV power transformers at the Kumbotso substation.
Others are 1×100MVA, 132/33KV power transformer in Dakata substation and the 1x100MVA, 132/33kV power transformer at Dan Agundi substation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the projects are expected to add 544 Megawatts (MW) wheeling capacity to Kano and the national grid.
It is also expected to strengthen bulk electricity supply to Kano’s industrial, commercial and residential areas by relieving overloaded substations and create room to meet previously suppressed demand.
Speaking while inaugurating the projects, the Minister of Power, Mr Joseph Tegbe said that the projects were a testament to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to him, the task before the ministry of power is to provide infrastructure that allows enterprise to flourish.
” This is significant for the communities and for the wider Kano electricity network as it would create a new supply point, relieves pressure on existing facilities.
“The projects would also give the distribution network greater flexibility in serving electricity consumers,”he said.
The minister also appealed to the host communities to keep the facilities safe from vandals.
”Please help us protect these infrastructure and make sure our vigilance is stronger than ever before as we are faced with a lot of vandalism across the country,”he said.
Mr Sule Abdulaziz, Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said that the projects reflected the company’s broader commitment to the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion, and Rehabilitation Programme.
Abdulaziz said that across the six geopolitical zones, TCN would continue to pursue the expansion of transmission infrastructure, the rehabilitation of existing facilities and the modernisation of critical equipment.
”These efforts are directed at strengthening the national transmission network and supporting the Federal Government’s power sector development objectives under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,”he said.
Abdulaziz, however, appealed to the communities for continued partnership in protecting vital national asset against vandalism and other threats.
He also urged them to respect transmission Right-of-Way corridors and report suspicious activities around transmission infrastructure.
The managing director said that reporting suspicious activities around the infrastructure was an important steps towards safeguarding power investments and ensuring their continued service to the public.(NAN)
