Meet the Future of Zhongshan in Cuiheng New Area

On December 8, the visiting delegation consists of translation celebrities and foreign media hosted by the CICG Academy of Translation and Interpretation – “Experience the Vitality of Zhongshan Tour” went to Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage, Real Scene Exhibition Hall of the Cuiheng New Area, Hongrita Precision Components (Zhongshan) Co., Ltd. among other places. The members of the visiting delegation deeply felt that Zhongshan is a city full of innovative opportunities and youthful vitality, and there is great room for the future development.

The delegation drove under the guidance of the staff to the middle section of the Zhongshan Bridge in the Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage. As soon as they got off the coach, they were deeply overwhelmed by the magnificent project. The paved deck spans east and west, wide and flat, and the main tower of the bridge towers high and spectacular at the Lingdingyang Bay.

The staff of the Management Center of Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage introduced that the Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage is a cross-sea cluster project integrating “bridges, islands, tunnels, and underwater interconnection”. With a total length of about 24 kilometers, it has created a number of “the world records”, and is the underwater steel box girder suspension bridge with world’s largest span and the world’s highest cross-sea bridge in terms of navigable clearance. At present, the construction of Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage is sprinting towards the goal of opening to traffic in mid-2024.

“The structural engineering design has a service life of 100 years. Considering the future development of the port, if sufficient altitude is not reserved, it will affect the navigation of large ships, so the net navigation height will be increased to the current altitude.” The staff said that the steel shell concrete submerged pipe tunnel with the characteristics of “ultra-wide, deep buried and widened” is also the first large-scale application in the world, and will become the world’s first extra-long two-way eight-lane concrete submerged tunnel with steel shell after its completion.

It is understood that as the only direct road connection between the two major urban agglomerations in the Pearl River Delta, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage is the transportation link between the Guangdong Pilot Free Trade Zone (Nansha in Guangzhou, Qianhai in Shenzhen and Hengqin in Zhuhai) and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao GBA, which is of strategic significance for accelerating the integrated development of the urban agglomerations in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao GBA.

In the exhibition hall of Zhongshan Cuiheng New Area, located on the 21st floor of Cuiheng Plaza, the delegation visited the Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage from a distance and overlooked the cityscape of the eastern area of Cuiheng New Area. Through images and texts, they have learned about the past, present and future of Cuiheng New Area: Cuiheng New Area, a provincial-level new area in Guangdong that serves as the landing point of the west bank of the Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage, is located in the two “concentric circles” of Nansha, Qianhai, Hengqin three national-level new areas and the four major cities of Guangdong and Shenzhen, and sits on the “1-hour commuting circle” of the GBA. Grasping the historical opportunity of opening up the Shenzhen-Zhongshan-Passage, Zhongshan Cuiheng New Area will create an innovative, industrial and talent highland on the west bank of the GBA in the future. By 2035, it will be an international, modern and innovative coastal new city, and become the city gateway for the development of Zhongshan.

Book review: China’s commitment to human rights admirably explained

Book review: China’s commitment to human rights admirably explained

Book review: China’s commitment to human rights admirably explained

Xi Jinping: On Respecting and Protecting Human Rights was translated into Urdu and other five languages, and published by Foreign Languages Press, providing an invaluable insight into the approach of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Chinese government and Chinese nation to human rights. This book is divided into nine chapters totaling 335 paragraphs in the form of President Xi’s speeches, comments, congratulatory letters and instructions from November 15, 2012 to October 30, 2021.
Muhammad Arshad Bhatti, a reporter for Pakistan-based The Nation, had been studying in China as an international student for years. In his book review, he observed that the universality of human rights and differences in history, country and culture are two sides of the same coin.
Muhammad Arshad Bhatti remarked that the message conveyed by the book is clear and powerful. That is, the first and foremost right of every person is to be entitled with dignity and right to enjoy a prosperous life and continue to do so. This is the very mission of the Chinese government led by the CPC. In his congratulatory letter to Beijing Forum on Human Rights held on September 16, 2015, President Xi Jinping said, “In modern times, the Chinese people have experienced their share of suffering. We understand just how important human values, basic human rights, and personal dignity are to social development. We cherish the hard-won environment of peace and development we enjoy today. We are steadfastly following a peaceful development path, and steadfastly striving to advance the cause of human rights in China and around the world.”
Bhatti whose major is politics said that this book engaged his interest with its comprehensive and clear insight into the Chinese view on human rights. This achievement is well-evidenced by the fact that during the past few years, the government has enabled millions of Chinese to shake off poverty, and live a prosperous life. In his book, President Xi also made comments about how to assess democracy. The assessment should be made by people, not by a handful of ill-informed outsiders. Taking a reductionist approach to assessing political systems and civilizations which are anything but self-explanatory is not democratic itself.
People who have some insight knowledge about China’s development will never fail to notice that under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, the Chinese government has attached great importance to human rights, right to development in particular, and adopted a people-centered approach to advancing human rights in all respects.
Bhatti summarized that this book provides an invaluable insight into how to respect and protect human rights. Readers can have a better understanding of the Chinese approach to human rights, and new perspectives on such rights.

China: An active participant in promoting human rights within the framework of global governance

China: An active participant in promoting human rights within the framework of global governance

China: An active participant in promoting human rights within the framework of global governance

Liu Huawen, executive director and researcher at Human Rights Research Center of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, wrote a book review on Xi Jinping: On Respecting and Protecting Human Rights. He believes that the book provides a comprehensive review of President Xi Jinping’s approach to respecting and protecting human rights. The book also provides important insights into how China plays an active role in promoting human rights within the framework of global governance. Active participation in promoting human rights within the framework of global governance embodies an important approach and major milestone for China to achieve human rights-based development. In the book Xi Jinping: On Respecting and Protecting Human Rights, President Xi Jinping illustrated four points.

First, countries around the world should practice true multilateralism, and safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order underpinned by international law.

In his speech at the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly on September 21, 2021, Xi said, “…we must improve global governance and practice true multilateralism. In the world, there is only one international system, i.e. the international system with the United Nations at its core. There is only one international order, i.e. the international order underpinned by international law.” He also stressed the importance of the UN to “advance, in a balanced manner, work in all the three areas of security, development and human rights.”

Second, all countries should emphasize the importance of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and create a virtuous cycle where cooperation, development and human rights reinforce one another.

China is the first developing country to realize the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), contributing over 70 percent to global poverty reduction. While managing its own affairs well, China is also an active player in driving global economic growth. An advocate and practitioner of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, China highly values the formulation and implementation of the United Nations development agenda.

Third, China has devoted serious energy to the development of developing countries and South-South cooperation.

Being the largest developing country itself, China faces the same or similar task with other developing countries along the path to survive and thrive through economic and social development. In fact, a basic principle in China’s foreign policy is to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with third world countries.

Fourth, every country should uphold the common values of humanity, playing an active role in the building of a global community of shared future.

Thanks to China’s efforts, the United Nations Security Council, the Economic and Social Council and the Human Rights Council have included the concept of building a global community of shared future in a number of resolutions, making it an increasingly significant component in international human rights discourse. The international community has achieved the consensus that human rights should be respected and protected, and that solidarity and cooperation should be strengthened. Promoting human rights within the framework of global governance is anchored in the common values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom illuminated by President Xi Jinping, and in the building of a global community of shared future.

China Matters’ Features: An astrophile of “chasing” space station

China Matters’ Features: An astrophile of “chasing” space station

On November 28th, China’s Tiangong space station has been photographed in its complete form for the first time. The space station’s main purpose is for scientific research.

In 1992, the Chinese government proposed a “three-step” strategy for aerospace engineering. Three decades later, from the Tianyan telescope, to the Tiangong space station, and the Tianwen-1 mission, China has steadily marched forward to unravel more mysteries of the universe.

Liu Boyang, a doctor of astrophysics, has been recording the changes of China’s space station as an astrophile. In April 2022, with self-developed optical tracking technology, Liu successfully captured a high-definition close-up image of the space station. Since then, he has traveled with his equipment to over 10 cities across the country, and photographed a total of 12 configurations.

In this video, China Matters portrays Liu Boyang’s latest and previous experience of photographing the configuration of Tianzhou-5 and Tianzhou-6 cargo spacecrafts, the largest configuration so far. Meanwhile, the story of why Liu Boyang took up his journey of chasing China space station and his dedicated efforts to record all kinds of configurations will be unveiled.

In what way is Liu Boyang going to continue his efforts about China’s space station? What plans does he have for this dedication?
