Chinese Dance Drama “MULAN” Premiered in the United States

Chinese Dance Drama “MULAN” Premiered in the United States

On site of the performance

On the evening of September 23, local time in the United States, the Chinese heroine Hua Mulan made a stunning appearance in the lyrical melody at the Wang Theater at the Boch Center in Boston, the United States. The “dance drama” has produced not only a classic legend, bus also a new environment of cultural exchanges. It was applauded once every 10 minutes on average! This was the premiere of the Chinese dance drama “MULAN” in the United States, where many overseas audiences were enchanted. More than 50 actors and actresses conveyed the unique oriental charm to the audience with their majestic and magnificent dancing performance. When the ensemble answering the curtain call, applause and cheers lasted for a full 15 minutes, which was enough to express the enthusiasm and love of more than 1,600 spectators for Chinese art.

Huang Ping, Chinese Consul General in New York, Shang Jiyuan, Cultural Counselor of the Chinese Consulate General in New York, Michael Thomas, President of the New England Commission of Higher Education in the United States, Tweed Roosevelt, Chairman of the Theodore Roosevelt Institute of Long Island University, and other guests came to see the performance and gave high praise.

Huang Ping said, “This is not only a performance, but also a bridge that communicates the hearts and minds of the people of China and the United States and promotes bilateral exchanges.” Tweed Roosevelt from the Roosevelt family praised highly: “This is a great show!”

Mulan is an international acclaimed IP of Chinese culture. The American audience is already familiar with the character of Mulan. Back in 1998, Disney has filmed the animated film Mulan. In 2020, the Disney has released its real-life version of the film Mulan worldwide.

Behind the dance drama “MULAN” was China’s leading creative team. It was jointly produced by the Ningbo Performance & Arts Group Co., Ltd., the China National Opera House and the Huangpi District Government in Wuhan and has won China’s most prestigious award of the Chinese dance art China Dance Lotus Award. The drama premiered at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in 2017, and has been staged in nearly 100 performances across China since then. It will be staged in Boston and Washington for six consecutive performances this time. “Although factors such as jet lag need to be overcome, the artists are excited. The enthusiasm of the American audience is quite out of my expectation.” Hao Ruoqi, the actress of Mulan, commented.

Rick and his wife from Boston came to the show and praised with admiration, “The dancers are very professional! Their costumes and stage design also have Chinese characteristics.” Another spectator, Steve, commented: “The part of the performance that Mulan embarking on a heroic journey to the battlefield was very exciting and worthy of recommendation. The dance drama has expressed the yearning for peace, which is the common pursuit of mankind.”

It is worth mentioning that the “circular turntable” with a diameter of 15 meters and a weight of 7 tons on the stage has demolished the limitations of time and space and created more scenes for a single stage. “I have been to China. Chinese history and culture are profound. Mulan in my impression is very traditional. I didn’t expect the stage of this dance drama to be so modern like this!” Michael Thomas told reporters.

Lin Hong, chairwoman of Ningbo Performance & Arts Group Co., Ltd., said: “Ningbo is located next to Shanghai and is an important port city in China. It has been delivering excellent performances in the recent years. I hope that this performance will play a positive role in the exchanges and mutual learning of civilizations between China and the United States.”

China Matters’ Feature: How does Beijing do fashion differently than anywhere else?

China Matters’ Feature: How does Beijing do fashion differently than anywhere else?

September in Beijing means fashion week, with the opening ceremony kicking off on the night of the 15. The overall vibe at the ceremony was like that of many fashion shows, deep house music booming while models strut across the runway staring intensely into the camera at the end of the catwalk. But it began slightly different from most fashion shows, with models dressed in traditional Chinese attire reenacting what would seem like the scenes of everyday life in the streets of Shanghai 100 years ago.

Beijing is doing fashion a little differently this year. New styles are blending with traditional Chinese elements showcasing one-of-a-kind designs in front of historical Beijing landmarks like Qianmen Gate. In this video, American host Jack Klumpp and Evy Pinero attend fashion week for the first time. Jack gets an up-close look at the runway shows themed around the distinctive styles of different ethnic cultures like that of the Ewenkis and Tibetans. He also learns about the highlights and aspirations of Beijing Fashion Week from the event organizer Zhao Zhe.

Meanwhile, Evy heads down to the intangible cultural heritage workshop where she experiences the ancient Chinese design art of paper marbling and new fashion tech like a scanning device that can take one’s body measurements and generate one’s 3D model all in a matter of three seconds.

How is Beijing Fashion Week becoming a platform for hundreds of designers to showcase their creations? What will we see when traditional attire is reborn with elements of modern fashion?

The First Competition of the Asian Games held in Ningbo, Zhejiang

The First Competition of the Asian Games held in Ningbo, Zhejiang

Chinese women’s volleyball team on the game

As the first match of the Asian Games, the beach volleyball competition of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou opened on September 19 at the Banbian Mountain Beach Volleyball Center of Mount Xiangshan in Ningbo. The Chinese team of Wang Yanwei/Li Jie defeated the Palestinian rival team, so that the Chinese delegation won the first match of the Asian Games. With the Asian sports event getting intense, the attention of the world has been led to the shore of the East China Sea.

Ningbo, Zhejiang, a coastal city with a history of more than 8,000 years of civilization, used to be a window for the exchange of Chinese civilization and world civilizations. Today, as the co-host city of the Hangzhou Asian Games, it will rely on the advantages of the port to host two events, sailing and beach volleyball, and once again enter the world stage. Ningbo is working hard to build the “City of Events” and handing out another “most beautiful business card” to the world.

Beach volleyball is followed by the sailing competition of the Asian Games. The women’s volleyball Olympic Qualification Tournament and the 2023 Ningbo Tennis Open are also around the corner. The successive heavyweight events will not only attract global attention, but also inject a steady stream of vitality into Ningbo. With the assistance of these events, Ningbo is now showing her unique urban charm.

The 2023 Ningbo Tennis Open will be held at the Yinzhou Tennis Center in Ningbo from September 23 to 30. So far, a total of 109 athletes from more than 30 countries and regions have entered the competition, with 38 athletes from the top 100 in the world. World renowned names such as Kvitova, Brady, Potapova will gather in Ningbo.

According to statistics, Ningbo hosts more than 50 sports events above the national level every year. The FIA World Touring Car Championship, the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Nations League, the “Belt and Road” Mountaineering International Masters Tournament, the Asian Weightlifting Championship, the National Sailing Championship and many other national and international events have not only made Ningbo famous, but also gave the city a broader vision and a higher realm.

The cultural and tourism industry is in full bloom upon booming sport events. The tournament economy continues to take the lead, and the vitality of the nation’s sports surges. A more three-dimensional and vivid Ningbo is now in our sight.

When sports are integrated into the bloodline of the city, people inadvertently show confidence and self-improvement, openness and inclusiveness, civilized and polite temperament, which also makes Ningbo thrive, ushering in “highlights moments” one by one.
